Eleven countries are building a great wall of trees across Africa. It is called the Great Green Wall. The aim is to bring life to the dry lands and help to fight the bad environment.

The wall is 8，000 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide. It covers from Senegal in the west to Djibouti in the east, on the south of the Sahara Desert(撒哈拉沙漠). So far, Senegal has made the best progress by planting about 11，000，000 trees.

Many years ago, there were few trees in that area and the winds used to be very strong. It was harmful to the fields. Also, there was little rain, so few plants could grow and many people went hungry. Since the tree planting project started, the trees have provided food for the local people and increased the wetness(湿度) of the air. In the 13th century, Marco Polo, the world known Italian traveller, saw many wonderful things in China. One of the things he discovered was money made of paper. People in the West did not have such kind of money until the 15th century. However, the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century.

Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2, 000 years ago. But it was not made in Europe until the year 1100.Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth some day in the near future. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.

So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.

Long, long ago people made fires from lightning(闪电). But they had to keep the fire burning, for they couldn’t start it again if there was no lightning. Later, they found out hitting two pieces of stone together could make a spark(火花). The spark could fire dry leaves. In this way they could make the fire again if it went out.
