When we decided to sell our flat, having been cheated by the previous owner, we thought it was really important to be completely honest with any potential buyers about having knotweed (蓼科杂草) in the garden. It had been such an unpleasant and stressful experience for us and we didn’t want to have anyone else suffer any longer.
We bought our two-bedroom flat in 2014, when it was just the two of us. But after having three kids it became too small, so we sold it last year. The flat has a small garden at the back, but we didn’t know the presence of knotweed until well after we moved in and had a note from our neighbor behind our flat saying that they thought we had knotweed. Then we had a look and found some very small offshoots for this was just around springtime. At that point my husband and I certainly didn’t realize quite how problematic it could be. But then we started reading all the horror stories and became really concerned — people couldn’t get a mortgage; they couldn’t sell; the plant was creeping through concrete etc.
Then we treated the offshoots with glyphosate and as far as we knew it was completely gone. Before we put the property on the market we had the house checked by some specialists, who thoroughly inspected everything, including the connecting garden, and couldn’t find anything at all. We signed a ten-year insurance-backed guarantee with the company that could be transferred to the new owners, then started marketing the property through an agent.
In fact we found a buyer pretty quickly and they didn’t beat us down on price as we’d already done much for the treatment. Knotweed doesn’t need to be a deal-breaker, as long as you’re upfront about it.
4. Why did the writer probably decide to sell the flat?
A To remind others to be honest. B. To escape the trouble of knotweed.
C. To avoid the crowded living space. D. To relieve the anger of being cheated.
5. What can we know about knotweed from the text?
A. It is planted for home decoration. B. It is a wild plant seen only in spring.
C. It would cause much trouble to people’s life. D. It aroused writer’s attention at very beginning.
6. How did the writer succeed in selling the flat at a reasonable price?
A. By showing tricks to the buyer. B. By taking effort to treat the knotweed.
C. By finding a well-known property agent. D. By decorating the flat with a fantastic garden.
7. Which of the following best describes the writer?
A. Dependable and responsible. B. Patient and modest.
C. Helpless and embarrassed. D. Careless and greedy.
C
Rivers are the veins of the Earth, transporting the water and nutrients (营养物) needed to support the planet’s ecosystems, including human life. While many nutrients are essential to the survival of life, there is one element transported by water in rivers that holds the key to life and to the future of our planet — carbon.
Carbon is everywhere and understanding the way it moves and is either released or stored by the Earth system is a complex science in itself. Carbon starts its journey downstream when natural acid rain, which contains carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, melts minerals in rocks. This helps transform carbon dioxide to bicarbonate (碳酸氢盐) in the water that then flows in our rivers. This is a very long process, which is one of the main ways carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere. Carbon is transported by rivers to oceans and once that carbon reaches the ocean, it is stored naturally in deep sea sediments (沉淀物) for millions of years.
As carbon travels down a river, different processes may impact whether it continues to flow downstream or whether it is released into the atmosphere. For example, human engineering, like extensive dam construction, will result in dramatic changes to how water and sediments travel down the river. Some carbon that fails to reach the sea may return to the atmosphere in some way, which causes more warming.
Earth’s climate is closely related to the carbon cycle. We all know about the essential role of plants in consuming carbon dioxide, but do we know enough about rivers? Changing the chemistry and the course of rivers may have significant impacts on how they transport carbon. Remember: wherever we live, we all live downstream.
8. Where is the carbon in rivers originally from?
A. The atmosphere. B. The rocks.
C. The acid rain. D. The upstream areas.
9. Why is human engineering mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To show how important to life carbon is.
B. To explain how necessary it is to build dams.
C. To show how a natural process is interrupted.
D. To explain how humans fight global warming.
10. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. We’d better move upstream to live.
B. We should protect plants along rivers.
C. We’d better seek more help from plants.
D. We should be cautious about river management.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Humans Do with Rivers
B. How Rivers’ Transporting Carbon Counts
C. What the Carbon Cycle Means to Us
D. How Living Downstream Affects the Earth

This is the digital age. If you don’t know what ChatGPT is, think of the digital products you’re constantly exposed to. Technology can close the gap between paper and screen, but not entirely. Typing will never be as distinctive as handwriting. Mastery of digital technologies is vital, but a sense of touch, authenticity and humanity still matter.
A recent research reveals the enduring value of paper, whether in making decisions, winning over customers or enhancing productivity. In a study from Maferima at Northwestern University and Lili Wang of Zhejiang University, the researchers approached strangers and asked them to take a made-up survey. Half the respondents were given a pen and paper to fill out the form; the other half were handed an iPad. At the end of the exercise, respondents were asked if they wanted to give their email address to receive information on how to donate to a charity. Those who used paper were much likelier to provide their email addresses.
The researchers also saw differences in behavior when they showed Chinese university students an ad for a bookseller at the end of the survey, and then asked them to select some of the books that were being promoted. Those using paper to fill out the questionnaire chose more highbrow books on average than those using the tablet. When asked, paper-and-pen respondents were indeed more likely than iPad users to think their choices were more indicative of their characters.
And in a study from 2017, researchers found that people assigned a greater value to the physical version of a product than its digital version. Shoppers were willing to pay more for books and films they could hold than ones they could only download. Even the sight of someone handling something can help online sales. They found that Instagram posts showing hands touching products like cups of coffee or smartphones got more likes than those that were not being pawed. Similarly, people browsing in a shop on line were more willing to buy a T-shirt if they saw their own simulated hand touch it. All of these explain why retailers target consumers who do more of their shopping offline when selling pricier, less functional products.
12. What does the author want to say in Paragraph 1?
A. Together with ChatGPT comes the digital age. B. Paper still has a role to play in the digital age.
C. People won’t write with pen in the future. D. Digital products do harm to our health.
13. How does the author mainly develop paragraphs 2&3?
A. By asking questions. B. By giving examples. C. By listing reasons. D. By making comparisons.
14. Which word can replace the underlined word “simulated” in the last paragraph?
A. shaky B. tiny C. virtual D. soft
15. What can we infer from the passage?
A. On-line shops will fail to attract customers in the future.
B. A hand-written birthday card is better than a text message.
C. A person with an app will be more likely to stick to his plan.
D. All exams and interviews will be conducted with pen and paper.

Movies and TV shows would have you believe that friendships just fall into place effortlessly, without much conflict. ____16____ By building a strong foundation for your friendship and working to reduce conflict, maintaining your relationships with friends will become a whole lot easier.
Be positive.
Focusing on the upside makes you a better friend. ____17____ If you’re someone who likes discussing emotional subjects, that’s okay, but remember to strike a balance and talk about more cheerful or lighthearted topics, too. Discussing something as simple as books or video games, or sharing funny or uplifting stories, is better for your friendships (and everyone’s moods).
Display interest in your friends.
____18____ When you don’t know what to talk about, it can be tempting to talk about yourself —but if you only talk about yourself, your friends might get annoyed. Making an effort to learn about your friends shows them that you want to know about who they are, and helps you build a better relationship with them. Ask them open-ended questions about their lives and interests —it will go a long way!
Listen to them.
Listening is just as important as showing interest. ____19____ Give your friend your full attention, and make mental notes about the important things in their lives — like the names of their loved ones, things they like, and major things that have happened (or are happening) in their lives.
____20____
Every friend will have their own oddities and behaviors. While it’s important to solve friendship problems, sometimes a “problem” is so minor that it’s not worth starting a possible conflict over it — like if they’re always five minutes late. Plus, trying to change how your friend acts can be tiring for you both. Accepting your friend’s “good sides” and “bad sides” will make it easier to get along.
A. Respect your differences.
B. Accept your friends as they are.
C. Your friends want to feel like you care about their lives.
D. Reflect back what you heard by retelling what they said.
E. It’ll help you learn about your friends and support them when they need it.
F. Complaints about hopeless situations can wear your friends thin after a while.
G. In real life, though, friendship takes a lot of work and can be complicated sometimes!

With the start of new school, freshmen of Hendersonville High School in Nashville were excited to meet new classmates and teachers. Among them, however,15-year-old Sergio Peralta was feeling very nervous because his right hand had never fully formed since he was born. Going to a new school and being “different” is always scary. Sergio was particularly concerned with what his classmates would think of him.
Sergio’s parents had trained him to use his left hand from an early age. As he grew up, he was used to not using his right hand. He could write with his left one and do some things with special tricks or techniques. Despite this, in the first days of new school, Sergio always felt like hiding his underdeveloped right hand in his sleeve as if nobody would ever find out if he did so.
It didn’t take long for someone to learn Sergio’s secret. Jeff Wilkins, the teacher of Sergio’s engineering class, figured out that Sergio was missing part of his hand and decided to do something for the new student. Jeff had been leading a robotics project in the school and expert in 3D printing technology. Besides, he hoped to take advantage of this hands-on chance to help his robotics students learn more about engineering and how building a robotic hand worked.
So in his class, Jeff announced with great enthusiasm, “You’re supposed to be engineering, coming up with new ideas and solving issues. Now Sergio needs a new hand, so we’ll work together to build Sergio a robotic hand.” His words fueled everyone’s curiosity and creativity.
For the next four weeks, Jeff and his class including Sergio worked on the project. After some precise measurements and researches, the class put forward a design draft. Jeff made a few adjustments and gave them some practical suggestions. With access to online models and a 3D printer, they eventually created a robotic hand, which was intended to look good and work well, like catching something.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】范文
Then came the final testing day. The whole class gathered in the science classroom, watching breathlessly as Jeff carefully loaded their self-made robotic hand onto Sergio's right arm. It fitted quite well! So excited was Sergio that his arm trembled slightly. Having put a baseball on the desk, Jeff signed to Sergio to pick it up. Slowly, Sergio extended his right hand and reached for the ball. Successfully he caught hold of it and everyone present broke into cheers! Holding the ball, Sergio couldn't contain his tears. Never in his life did he expect to catch something with his right hand!
The life-changing gift for Sergio drew huge attention. Jeff and his students became an instant hit and various media competed to cover the news. When interviewed about the intention of the project, Jeff said, “I intended Sergio's robotic hand to show our support for him. Meanwhile, I hope to foster students' scientific spirit through this hands-on operation.” His students stated that Jeff challenged them to transform abstract concepts into reality, from which they benefited greatly. Soon voluntary donations poured in, which would go to the school's scientific research and help students develop better.
