【典例】(2020·新高考全国Ⅰ卷·D) According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake. And contrary to existing research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions(份), it’s the beanpoles with big appetites you really need to avoid.
To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, 95 undergraduate women were individually invited into a lab to ostensibly(表面上)participate in a study about movie viewership. Before the film began, each woman was asked to help herself to a snack. An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds.
Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit, taking more food than they normally would have. However, they took significantly more when the actor was thin. For the second test, in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case, she took 30 pieces. The results were similar to the first test: the participants followed suit but took significantly more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces.
The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when we’re making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more, so will I. Call it the “I’ll have what she’s having” effect. However, we’ll adjust the influence. If an overweight person is having a large portion, I’ll hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot, I’ll follow suit. If he can eat much and keep slim, why can’t I?
    1. What does the underlined word “beanpoles” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Big eaters. B. Overweight persons. C. Picky eaters. D. Tall thin persons.
举例时, 常常会用一些连接性的词, 如such as, like, for example, for instance等。
【典例】 (2019·全国卷Ⅱ· B) “You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it. ” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids’ lacrosse(长曲棍球)club.
I guess that there’s probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on . . . At this point the unwilling parent speaks up, “Alright. Yes, I’ll do it. ”
I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.
Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good. In that sense, I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I’d freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies?
    2. What does the underlined phrase“tug at the heartstrings”in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Encourage teamwork. B. Appeal to feeling. C. Promote good deeds. D. Provide advice.

常见的表示同等关系的信号词有: or, namely, that is, in other words, that is to say, to be more exact, to put it another way等。
【典例】 (2020·全国Ⅲ卷·B) When “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was first shown to the public last month, a group of excited animal activists gathered on Hollywood Boulevard. But they weren’t there to throw red paint on fur-coat-wearing film stars. Instead, one activist, dressed in a full-body monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers: “Thanks for not using real apes (猿)!”
The creative team behind“Apes” used motion-capture (动作捕捉) technology to create digitalized animals, spending tens of millions of dollars on technology that records an actor’s performance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image (图像). In this case, one of a realistic-looking ape.
Yet “Apes” is more exception than the rule. In fact, Hollywood has been hot on live animals lately. One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in filmed entertainment, is keeping tabs on more than 2, 000 productions this year. Already, a number of films, including “Water for Elephants”, “The Hangover Part Ⅱ” and “Zookeeper”, have drawn the anger of activists who say the creatures acting in them haven’t been treated properly.
In some cases, it’s not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that has activists worried; it’s the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns. And there are questions about the films made outside the States, which sometimes are not monitored as closely as productions filmed in the States.
    3. What does the underlined phrase “keeping tabs on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Listing completely. B. Directing professionally. C. Promoting successfully. D. Watching carefully.

【典例】 (2020·新高考全国Ⅰ卷·C) In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.
    4. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Developing a serious mental disease. B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia. C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.

Passage 1 (2020·潍坊二模) Blue whales, the earth’s largest animals, call to others of their kind, though exactly what these cries communicate remains a mystery. But these sounds have begun evolving (演变). Since at least the 1960s, the pitch (音调) of Antarctic blue whales has downshifted. Scientists have theories as to why: all involving humans.
The deepening of their sounds is not unique. Many blue whales around the world have also dropped their pitch. In a study last year that analyzed more than 1 million individual recordings of whale calls, scale shifts were found across species, and among populations that don’t necessarily interact with one another. This is to say, whatever has caused the change doesn’t seem to have a specific geographic origin.
The underwater noises caused by ocean traffic and at-sea industries might seem a likely criminal. However, scientists have identified lowered pitches even across populations of whales that live in seas without major shipping routes. One possible explanation for the change is the achievements of global conservation efforts. As their populations have grown, then, the whales may have decreased their volume because they are more likely to be communicating over short distances.
Last year’s study of whale calls also suggests a threatening reason for the drop in pitch, however. Perhaps whales don’t need to be so loud because sound waves travel farther in oceans made acidic by the absorption of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, meanwhile, may also indirectly influence whale voices in other ways. Recent study shows that, during the summer, the whales must use their top volume to be heard in the cracking ice — a natural sound increased by unnatural processes, as rising temperatures worsen ice-melt. So the impacts of a warming planet may modulate animal sounds even in remote places.
1. To what extent is whales’ pitch drop?A. Across the species. B. In the Antarctic Ocean. C. Among some populations. D. Within one million individuals.
    【解析】选A。
    2. What causes the evolving of whales’ pitch according to the text?A. Less communication and more threat. B. Protection efforts and acidic sea water. C. Sharp decrease of whales’ populations. D. Underwater noises by ships and industries.
    3. What does the underlined word “modulate” mean in the last paragraph?A. Produce. B. Damage. C. Balance. D. Change.
    4. What can we infer from the text?A. Man is the soul of nature. B. Man and nature are in one eco-system. C. Nature pardons no mistakes. D. Nature has the final say over man.
Passage 2 One afternoon I was sitting at home feeling so bored. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I wanted to meet people and have new experiences so I decided to start volunteering. I searched on my computer and found a website where I could volunteer on a farm in France.
My time working on a farm was a new experience for me. It was basically a free holiday as food and accommodation were provided. However, it was not your typical holiday as I had to look after fifteen horses and sleep at the top of a tower in a castle!I was an awful farmer but it did not matter because I made some great friends.
However, you do not need to go abroad to volunteer. I have had plenty of adventures at home as volunteering can become a hobby. For example, I love singing so I had a good laugh waving my arms in an attempt to conduct my local choir(唱诗班). I did slowly improve and it felt great to conduct the choir in a concert. At university, I organized a concert for charity with my friends. It was really fun finding bands and raising money for a cause we believe in.
It is true that you feel good volunteering but there are also other advantages. I once volunteered as a server at a charity sports event where the organizers gave me cupcakes to thank me for my services. I also volunteered in a charity shop so I found loads of nice cheap clothes to update my wardrobe(衣柜).
While this is all fun, my favorite aspect of volunteering is creating and sharing stories. My terrible attempts at farming have given me hilarious stories to tell!Talking to volunteers from different countries and backgrounds has also helped me learn more about the world. I feel thankful to have had so much fun with many nice people thanks to volunteering.
    5. Why did the author want to volunteer?A. He wanted to go abroad. B. He felt ashamed of himself. C. He wanted to taste new life and make friends. D. He wanted to be a farmer. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I wanted to meet people and have new experiences so I decided to start volunteering.
    6. The underlined word “hilarious” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to“______”.  A. sad B. funny C. awful D. critical【解析】选B。 My terrible attempts at farming have given me hilarious stories to tell! I feel thankful to have had so much fun with many nice people thanks to volunteering.
    7. The author did much volunteering work except ______.  A. taking care of horses and sheepB. conducting a choir in a concertC. helping in a charity sports eventD. helping in a charity shop
【解析】选A。 I did slowly improve and it felt great to conduct the choir in a concert. I once volunteered as a server at a charity sports event where the organizers gave me cupcakes to thank me for my services. I also volunteered in a charity shop so I found loads of nice cheap clothes to update my wardrobe. However, it was not your typical holiday as I had to look after fifteen horses and sleep at the top of a tower in a castle!
    8. How does the author feel according to the last paragraph?A. Curious. B. Anxious. C. Cautious. D. Grateful. I feel thankful to have had so much fun with many nice people thanks to volunteering.
Passage 3(2020·天津一模) What is it about kids these days that makes older generations so easily angry? In some way or another, older generations have been disappointed at the youth’s decline since the earliest days of civilization. Even Aristotle talked smack about how young folks thought they knew everything back in the 4th century BC.
So why do people throw all the shade on the next generation? A study that came out last month in Science Advances shows that negative opinions about kids aren’t always based on their actions; it’s more about how adults praise their past and current selves. In the study, researchers looked at a trio(三人组) of characteristics in three groups of US adults: respect for elders or authoritarianism(权威主义), intelligence, and enjoyment of reading. The team, led by John Protzko, a
cognitive scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, asked the participants whether they thought kids in the modern age shared the same qualities. They found that adults who tested especially strong in one of the categories tended to see children today as weak in it. For example, if an adult got tagged or self-identified as intelligent, they were more likely to see “kids these days” as less intelligent than they used to be. This, Protzko thinks, is because they remembered their younger selves to be smarter, whether true or not. What’s more, they only reserved their strong opinion for characteristics they related to.
In another stage of the study, the authors assigned random scores to participants to trick them into thinking how well-read they were. Many of the adults changed their opinions on kid’s reading ability as a result, Protzko speculates that there are two reasons for the shift: How memories can go wrong and the lack of objective knowledge of what childhood is really like. “People who are high in trait are imposing(迫使)their current high standing in that trait back in time, thinking ‘Oh this must have been what all kids were like, ’” he says. Over the years, the same memory bias(偏见)keeps occurring,
making it seem like kids are somehow failing more and more. In fact, the older a participant was, the more heavily this bias came into play, Protzko says. While there’s still a lot to learn about why adults might see younger generations as mediocre, this research can hint that an age-old phrase can boil down to one classic human trail: vanity(自负).
    9. What does the underlined phrase in the first paragraph mean?A. Expressed his affection for. B. Talked positively about. C. Spoke ill of. D. Thought highly of.
    10. What does a study published last month in Science Advances indicate?A. Negative opinions about kids come from their ill behavior. B. Adults always keep their previous and present glories in mind. C. Adults hold positive opinions about kids for their actions. D. Kids are always blamed by adults who are more outstanding.
    11. According to the study, why were adults more likely to consider “kids these days” as less intelligent?A. Because adults got tagged or self-identified as intelligent. B. Because adults thought themselves much smarter. C. Because adults hold the view that kids were weaker than them. D. Because adults only remembered their own strengths subjectively.
    12. Which of the following statements may Protzko agree with?A. Adults hold the bias that kids these days are failing. B. Adults probably forgot all kids have the same characteristics. C. That the same memory bias keeps occurring led to kid’s failure. D. The participants ignored the bias as they grew older. 【解析】选A。 While there’s still a lot to learn about why adults might see younger generations as mediocre(虽然关于为什么成年人可能会认为年轻一代平庸还有很多需要研究的地方)可判断出, 成年人有一种偏见, 认为现在的孩子们都很失败。
【加固训练】Passage 1(2020·泰安二模) Turtles may be cute, but they are also slow and clumsy, which doesn’t really help them when they are trying to cross train tracks. Luckily, for the turtles in Japan’s Hyōgo Prefecture, railway operators and a local aquarium teamed up to find a solution.
Between 2002 and 2014, disruptions (中断) of train operation caused by turtles were reported 13 times, with many more probably going unreported. That is why, in 2015, West Japan Railway Co. and Suma Aqualife Park in Kobe joint forces to prevent tragic turtle deaths on the tracks and unnecessary train delay. After running a series of tests and experiments, they came up with a U-shaped ditch (沟渠) that collects the turtles, preventing them from getting stuck between the metal tracks and getting crushed to death.
Tests showed that turtles trying to cross the train tracks often fall into the space between them, which leaves them with no other option than to walk between them. Sadly, this causes some of them to get stuck between the metal tracks at junctions(交叉口), and they unavoidably get crushed to death when the points blades(叶片)move.
“The turtles are basically just going about their daily business and have to cross the lines to get to a pond, ” a railway spokesperson said. “When the points blades move, unfortunately they get squashed between them and die. They can cause long delays to operations so we consulted with a turtle specialist to find the best way to help them. ”
The U-shaped concrete ditches installed at several critical points along the train lines near the city of Kobe catch the turtles at danger of getting stuck between the tracks. They allow the turtles to get past the junctions safely. 10 turtles were reportedly saved in the first month since the U-shaped ditch was put to use in November 2015.
    1. What’s the best title of the text?A. An Important Invention in JapanB. The U-shaped Concrete DitchesC. Turtles Crossing Train Tracks in DangerD. Japan’s Clever Solution to Help Turtles Cross Train Tracks【解析】选D。
    2. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A. Why the U-shaped ditch is invented. B. The turtles’ terrible conditions. C. The train delay caused by turtles. D. How the turtles go through the tracks. 【解析】选A。
    3. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. The turtles. B. The trains. C. The train tracks. D. The points blades. Tests showed that turtles trying to cross the train tracks often fall into the space between them, which leaves them with no other option than to walk between them.
    4. What can we infer about the ditches?A. They are installed on the railway tracks. B. They can prevent turtles from escaping. C. They are easy to trap the turtles. D. They are helpful for turtles to cross train tracks.
Passage 2(2020·临沂模拟) Even for a first-time visitor to China, it is impossible to ignore the popularity of Quick-Response (QR) codes. These square-shaped black-and-white symbols in WeChat or Alipay where QR codes are scanned to add new friends or make payments.
The QR code system originated in Japan. The engineer Masahiro Hara felt the limitation of the one-dimension barcode in use and thus developed the QR codes which could carry data horizontally and vertically. QR codes could hold much more information than barcode due to their extra dimension. In addition, QR codes have larger data capacity, smaller print-out size and higher resistance to dirt and damage, which make them widely applied in many other applications.
Though the technology of QR codes is complicated, we can easily create our own QR codes with the help of QR code generators, many of which are available online for free. Users could enter the data they wish the QR code to display, and the generator turns it into a symbol that can be printed or displayed in electronic form. The process of creating QR codes could be really fun when we customise the design of the codes according to our specific needs. For instance, we can adjust the color, add a logo, and create social options
etc. Moreover, dynamic (动态的) QR codes are also available. They are more various than standard QR codes because they allow users to edit data entered previously whereas data in standard QR codes cannot be edited once printed. Plus, don’t limit your QR code to one mobile scanner. Anyone can scan your code with any reader. A lower barrier to entry makes success more likely for you and the user.
Meanwhile, we must also recognize the vulnerability of QR codes. Due to their easy access, criminals can steal simply by replacing the QR codes with their own, routing cash into their own bank accounts. 专题能力提升练 九限时25分钟Passage 1(2020·泰安二模) The ocean covers over 70 percent of the surface of Earth today, but over 3 billion years ago the entire planet may have been covered in water. To investigate what our planet was like billions of years ago, a team of researchers turned to indirect methods of analysis at a geological site in the Australian Outback known as Panorama(全景画) in the Pilbara Craton. Today, the region is 100 kilometers inland, but 3. 2 billion years ago, it was deep underwater.
In fact, there were also once ancient hydrothermal vents (热水口) there where seawater bubbled up through the ocean floor. “There are no samples of really ancient ocean water lying around, but we do have rocks that interacted with that seawater and remembered that interaction, ” lead author Benjamin Johnson, an assistant professor at Iowa State University, said in a statement.    The researchers collected over 100 of these rock samples and found something peculiar in them: a slightly higher amount of a particular isotope (同位素) of oxygen. The vast majority of oxygen on Earth is Oxygen-16 and contains eight protons (质子) and eight neutrons. However, about 0. 20 percent is Oxygen-18.
Samples from Australia show the region’s ancient water contained more Oxygen-18 than present times. Since continents are covered in clay-rich soil that is efficient at trapping Oxygen-18, the team suggests that without continents covered in soil, more Oxygen-18 would have been present in the ocean. Their discovery indeed suggests there wasn’t much dry land available 3. 24 billion years ago.
“There’s nothing in what we’ve done that says you can’t have tiny, micro-continents sticking out of the oceans, ” added co-author Boswell Wing. “We just don’t think there were global-scale formations of continental soils like we have today. ” The researchers don’t know when and how continents began to emerge out of the ocean but they plan to investigate “younger” rock formations to piece together a more precise timeline.
    1. Where is the research site?A. In a region deep underwater. B. In a region off Australia. C. In a region inland Australia. D. In a region outside the Pilbara Craton. To investigate what our planet was like billions of years ago, a team of researchers turned to indirect methods of analysis at a geological site in the Australian Outback known as Panorama in the Pilbara Craton.
    2. What do the underlined words “interacted with” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Had an effect on each other. B. Had a one-way effect. C. Had a mysterious effect. D. Had a negative effect.
【解析】选A。 There are no samples of really ancient ocean water lying around, but we do have rocks that interacted with that seawater and remembered that interaction. . .
    3. What’s the researchers’ conclusion after analyzing samples from Australia?A. Modern earth must have been a water world. B. Modern earth must have been a continental world. C. Ancient earth may have been a water world. D. Ancient earth may have been a continental world.
    4. What’s the researchers’ next focus of the study?A. To research continental soils’ formations. B. To research the ocean’s formations. C. To research “older” rock formations. D. To research “younger” rock formations. The researchers don’t know when and how continents began to emerge out of the ocean but they plan to investigate “younger” rock formations to piece together a more precise timeline.
Passage 2(2020·德州一模) As doctors performed surgery on Dagmar Turner’s brain, the sound of a violin filled the operating room. The music came from the patient on the operating table. In a video from the surgery, the violinist was moving her bow(琴弓)up and down as surgeons behind a plastic sheet worked to remove her brain tumor(肿瘤). The King’s College Hospital surgeons woke her up in the middle of the operation in order to ensure they did not damage parts of the brain necessary for playing the violin and keep her hand’s functions intact.
Turner, 53, learned that she had a slow-growing tumor. Later doctors found that it had become more aggressive and the violinist decided to have surgery to remove it. Turner recalled doctors telling her, “Your tumor is on the right-hand side, so it will not affect your right hand, it will affect your left hand. ”Staring down at her left hand, she said, “This is my most important part. My job these days is playing the violin, which is my passion. ”
“ We knew how important the violin is to Turner, so it was vital that we preserved function in the delicate areas of her brain that allowed her to play, ”Keyoumars Ashkan, a doctor at King’s College Hospital, said in a press release.
Before Turner’s operation, Ashkan and his colleagues spent two hours carefully mapping her brain to identify areas that were active when she played the violin and those controlling language and movement. Waking her up during surgery then allowed doctors to monitor whether those parts were suffering damage. The surgery was a success. Ashkan said, “We managed to remove over 90 percent of the tumour, including all areas suspicious of aggressive activity, while retaining(保持) full function of her left hand. ”
Brad Mahon, expert at Carnegie Mellon University, said the basic features of an “awake craniotomy(穿颅术)”—the type of brain surgery where patients are awake in order to avoid damage to critical brain areas—have remained largely unchanged for decades. For example, doctors have long used simple tests such as asking a patient to name what they’re seeing in pictures to make sure language ability is preserved.
But he said that doctors are now able to map the patient’s brain activity in great detail before the surgery, using an imaging technique called functional MRI. That means surgeons are coming into the operating room with far more information about a specific patient’s brain. That kind of information helps doctors tailor tests to a patient’s particular needs.
    5. What does the underlined word “intact” mean in the first paragraph?A. strongB. sound C. talentedD. influential
The King’s College Hospital surgeons woke her up in the middle of the operation in order to ensure they did not damage parts of the brain necessary for playing the violin and keep her hand’s functions可知国王学院医院外科医生们为了确保他们没有损害Turner拉小提琴必须用到的大脑部分, 并且保持她手部功能的完整性, 他们在手术中叫醒了她。
    6. Why did Ashkan and his colleagues map Turner’s brain before operation?A. To keep her brain more active when she played the violin. B. To monitor whether her brain had suffered damage severely. C. To recognize the areas related to music and movement precisely. D. To remove the tumor while keeping all function of her brain.
    7. What can we know according to Brad Mahon?A. Doctors are using an imaging technique to monitor the surgery. B. Patients are asleep to protect critical brain areas in a surgery. C. A patient’s language ability couldn’t be preserved before. D. Surgeons can personalize a patient’s operation by mapping his brain. But he said that doctors are now able to map the patient’s brain activity in great detail before the surgery, using an imaging technique called functional MRI.
    8. What is the best title for the passage?A. Musician joined in her own brain surgeryB. Mapping a brain is realized after surgeryC. The violinist suffers from a brain tumorD. Doctors perform surgery on a brain【解析】选A。
Passage 3 About four million people worldwide took to the streets on Friday, September 20, 2019, for the Global Climate Strike. The young protestors (抗议者), and their adult supporters, marched along city streets outside government buildings to urge leaders to take action against climate change.
The back-to-back protests are timed to coincide (与……一致) with the United Nations Climate Change Summit in New York City on Monday, September 23, 2019. The meeting is designed to challenge world leaders from 69 countries to discuss steps to handle climate change. The UN hopes their actions will help reduce global carbon emissions by 45% by 2030, and if all goes well, eliminate them altogether by 2050.
While the strikes are in long-standing anger about the changing environment, the worldwide call for action is closely linked to teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg. The 16-year-old got well-known a year ago after she began spending Fridays outside the Swedish Parliament (国会) building in Stockholm to convince officials to take action against climate change. Her protests have inspired young people worldwide to take action in their cities.
Thunberg, who came from Sweden to New York City in an emissions-free sailboat, was one of the key speakers at the UN Climate Change Summit. On Monday, September 23, the teenager told lawmakers, “You all come to us young people for hope. How dare you? You’ve stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words, and yet, I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are falling down. So you have to listen to scientists and take immediate measures to help stop climate change. ”
While Thunberg and other young climate activists are calling the recent global Climate Strike a victory in terms of its size and reach, they realize it’ ll take time to convince lawmakers to create real change. However, the teenager is hopeful they’ll begin to pay attention as more people of all ages join in the call-to-action.
    9. What can we know about the Global Climate Strike from the text?A. It is to support the climate Change Summit. B. It is to raise teenagers environmental awareness. C. It was led by adults but mainly included teenagers. D. It was attended by millions of people in the world. About four million people worldwide took to the streets on Friday, September 20, 2019, for the Global Climate Strike.
    10. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Join. B. Improve. C. Get rid of. D. Stay away from. The meeting is designed to challenge world leaders from 69 countries to discuss steps to handle climate change. The UN hopes their actions will help reduce global carbon emissions by 45% by
    11. What is the third paragraph intended to show?A. The role that Thunberg plays in the Strike. B. Thunberg’s contributions to climate change. C. The importance of the global climate Strike. D. Thunberg’s opinions on the Global Climate Strike. 【解析】选A。
    12. What did Thunberg focus on expressing at the climate Change Summit?A. Humans’ carelessness is worsening climate. B. Humans are suffering due to climate change. C. Measures need taking to stop climate change. D. Extreme climate change is drawing attention.
专题能力提升练 十限时25分钟Passage 1(2020·青岛一模) In life, once on a path, we tend to follow it, for better or worse. What’s sad is that even if it’s the latter, we often accept it anyway because we are so used to the way things are that we don’t even recognize that they could be different. This is a phenomenon psychologist call functional fixedness.
This classic experiment will give you an idea of how it works and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap: People are given a box of tacks (大头钉) and some matches and asked to find a way to attach a candle to a wall so that it burns properly.
Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or lighting it to fix it with melted wax. The psychologists had, of course, arranged it so that neither of these obvious approaches would work. The tacks are too short, and the paraffin (石蜡) doesn’t stick to the wall. So how can you complete the task? The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle-holder. You empty it, tack it to the wall, and stand the candle inside it. To think of that, you have to look beyond the box’s usual role as a receptacle just for tacks and re-imagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer to one degree or another from functional fixedness.
The inability to think in new ways affects people in every corner of society. The political theorist Hannah Arendt coined the phrase“frozen thoughts”to describe deeply held ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt’s eyes, the self-content reliance on such accepted “truths”also made people blind to ideas that didn’t fit their worldview, even when there was plenty of evidence for them. Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence she said, “It can be found in highly intelligent people. ”
1. What does the underlined word“it”in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. The experiment. B. Functional fixedness. C. The path. D. The thinking.
This is a phenomenon psychologist call functional fixedness. This classic experiment will give you an idea of how it works and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap: 可知这个经典的实验将让你了解它是如何起作用的, 还会让你知道你是否会掉入同样的陷阱。结合上文可知这里的it就是前文的(functional fixedness)功能固着。
    2. Which way is hard to think of to complete the task?A. Tacking the candle to the wall. B. Fixing the candle with melted wax. C. Using the tack box as a candle-holder. D. Lighting the candle to stand it.
The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle-holder. . . from functional fixedness.
    3. Which of the following statements will Hannah Arendt agree with?A. People should question. B. We should be used to the way things are. C. People shouldn’t accept the idea that doesn’t fit their worldview. D. The smarter people are, the more open to the new things they are. 【解析】选A。
    4. What’s the passage mainly about?A. An interesting experiment. B. A psychological phenomenon. C. A theory to be proved. D. The opinion of Hannah Arendt.
Passage 2(2020 ·重庆模拟) On a freezing December morning Matthew Warwick, then a 20-year-old college student, climbed on the edge of Waterloo Bridge in London. That morning, Matthew escaped from a mental health hospital, where he’d been diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder. He headed straight to the bridge, convinced that his disease was a life sentence. Hundreds of people passed by. Only one man called Alex Owen, then 25, calmly and quietly walked to Matthew’s side.
“You’re alright, man? Why are you sitting on a bridge?” At first Matthew wanted Alex to leave him alone, but something in Alex’s calm, down-to-earth manner struck a chord. Matthew felt faith, like he could talk to him.    “It’s cold here. Why not have some coffee in a warm cafe? Everything will be OK. ” For the first time after the diagnosis Matthew felt perhaps it really might. He climbed back.
The police, having received calls from passers-by, were waiting there. They quickly put him into a police car, in case he was to panic and jump. He lost sight of Alex, the person who’d brought him hope. Matthew ended up back in hospital. Eventually, he was well enough to return to university and finish his degree. Over the next six years, Matthew often thought about the stranger who had talked him round. Eager to thank him in person, he posted a Facebook message nicknaming the good man Mike. His Find Mike post was shared millions of times around the world, as far as Canada.
