Like many of my generation,I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however,we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask:What is a hero?
Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.A hero does something worth talking about.A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.
Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves.Like highvoltage(电压)transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.
The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning.A sure test for wouldbe heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?
Heroes are catalysts (催化剂)for change. They have a vision from the mountain top. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities.Without Gandhi,India might still be part of the British Empire.Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King,Jr.,we might still have segregated(隔离的)buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for largescale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.

I work as an aid on a school bus. There is a guy Tyrell who is almost completely blind. Tyrell was all smiling for about a week. He's normally a quite happy kid, but I could tell this was different from the normally silly smile I see. Wednesday morning my curiosity finally got me to ask him why.
He told me that he was going to ride his new 3-wheeled bike when he got home. He couldn't control his happiness. When he got off, he gave me a smile. A smile will forever be in my heart.
The next morning, I noticed that his eyes were quite puffy (浮肿的). So were his mother's. I asked them why. She explained that was due to many hours of tears the night before. She said that Tyrell got to ride the bike once before he had to come in for dinner and was promised he could ride it again afterward. He left it in the back yard where they thought it would be safe.
However, after dinner, the bike was nowhere to be found. They immediately broke into tears because they knew the thing that he treasured so much was stolen. She called her close friend to find some comfort.
The friend called her up later and said that she forgot to tell Tyrell's mom that she had something for them and asked if it would be OK to bring it over. She, of course, was still crying from the thought that another bike would be impossible to afford and said yes. The friend brought over a huge box, in which there was a brand new bike for Tyrell.
When they noticed what was in the box, they thanked their angel and cried even harder, not of sadness but of joy, and thankfulness.

Going to college has been such a new experience for me. Everything is different from when I was in high school. One thing I've noticed is that I haven't been focusing on my coursework like I planned.
I thought I would spend most of my college life studying. But since I've been in college, about 60 percent of my time has been devoted to social life, while only 40 percent of my time has been devoted to my studies. I never knew I would make so many friends in such a short time.
It's been so overwhelming (无法抵抗的)! I'm not saying that making friends is bad, but I'm starting to realize how much socializing has cut down on the time I should have spent on studying.
Needless to say, that has to be changed.
I've realized that I really don't want to spend an extra year or two here just because I slacked off as a freshman. So the first thing I'm going to do is to cut down on the amount of time I spend socializing. I will also have to say goodbye to a good part of the activities I like to attend.
It's really difficult to cut these things out of my life, but I have to choose: I can have a full-time social life and fail college, or I can learn to balance my time between friends and studying and keep good grades. I think I'll stick to that second option!
I may be a little strict on myself, but I'm here to get an education, not to learn how to socialize more! I want to have fun at college, but at the same time, I want to get a good education and have a bright future!
9. What did the writer realize about his first year at college?
A. He doesn't work as hard as in high school.
B. Teachers don't care about him any more.
C. He could make quite a lot of friends.
D. He could spend much time on study.
10. The writer makes a decision that he will ____.
A. devote himself to his study rather than making friends
B. say good-bye to all his college activities
C. cut down all his social life to have a good education
D. try not only to study well but also to have fun at college

A. do one's best B. spare no effort
C. have a good time D. make less effort
12. We can infer from the passage that the writer will ____ at college.
A. spend more time on study B. make a lot of friends
C. take more activities D. cut down his studying time
D
After a couple has had their first child, to their disappointment they became infertile and couldn't have more children. Cloning would enable such a couple to have a second child, perhaps a younger twin to the child they already have. Many couples have difficulty having children, and sometimes it is impossible for couples to have children because they are infertile. Cloning would allow these couples to have children.
It is hard to tell someone that they cannot use cloning to have children when no other possible ways to have children are available. This is one reason why it is difficult to decide whether cloning is moral or not. The following are some of the reasons why cloning should be allowed.
Through cloning, research can progress. We possibly can learn more about cell. We may develop technology to allow easier genetic testing and fixing problems such as spinal cord injuries, cancer, and many more.
Cloning organs for organ transplants (移植) is one of the major practical reasons that cloning should be allowed. There is always a high demand for organs. Some argue for the cloning of humans to create extra body parts. Others talk of just wanting to clone an organ to replace a faulty organ.
Rejuvenation (恢复青春) is also a key argument for advocates (提倡) of cloning. Some scientists believe that injecting cloned healthy heart cells into damaged heart tissue will lead to healing of the heart. By combining the technology for cloning and the technology for growing human stem cells, conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and some other ageing disease may be curable. The possibilities are endless and may be left undiscovered if human cloning is forbidden.
13. The underlined word “infertile” in Para. 1 means “____”.
A. unable to have children B. too poor to grow crops
C. poor in pregnant knowledge
D. unable to afford to bring up children
14. How many reasons does the writer give in this passage about why cloning should be allowed?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
15. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Cloning babies for infertile couples is moral.
B. Through cloning, research work in cells can make great progress.
C. Cloning cells can make some diseases concerning ageing curable.
D. Cloning technology may help improve medical technology.
16. From the passage, we can know the writer's attitude toward human cloning is ____.
A. negative B. supportive C. uninterested D. opposing

BARCELONA (Reuters) — “Galactic Suite”, the first hotel planned in space, expects to open for business in 2012 and would allow guests to travel around the world in 80 minutes.
Its architects say the space hotel will be the most expensive in the galaxy, costing $4 million for a three-day stay.
During that time guests would see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl (爬) around their pod (分离舱) rooms by sticking themselves to the walls like Spiderman.
Company director Xavier Claramunt says the three-bedroom hotel's joined up pod structure, which makes it look like a model of molecules, was based on the fact that each pod room had to fit inside a rocket to be taken into space.
“It's the bathrooms in zero gravity that are the biggest challenge,” says Claramunt. “How to provide enough space for more private activities of the guests is not easy.”
But they may have solved the issue of how to take a shower in weightlessness — the guests will enter a spa room in which bubbles of water will float around.
When guests are not admiring the view from the windows of their pod rooms', they will take part in scientific experiments on space travel.
“There is fear associated with going into space,” said Claramunt. “That's why the shuttle rocket will remain fixed to the space hotel for the duration of the guests' stay, so they know they can get home again.”
“But,” says Claramunt, “I'm hopeful that the impact of seeing the earth from a distance will stimulate (激发) the guests' urge to value and protect our planet.”
17. Which of the following might be the best title for this passage?
A. “Galactic Suite”: the first hotel planned in space
B. Fly me to the moon: space hotel sees 2012 opening
C. Fly to the moon: a greatest dream for humans
D. Building a space hotel: a dream or a reality?
18. Which of the following is NOT what guests can do in “Galactic Suite”?
A. Watching the sunrise. B. Taking a weightless shower.
C. Doing scientific experiments. D. Walking in space.
19. Suppose we will travel to space, the following will be the problems we must solve EXCEPT ____.
A. weightlessness B. fear C. pollution D. money
20. The writer's writing this passage is to ____.
A. prove space travel is possible
B. tell us a bright dream of going to space
C. explain some problems existing in space travel
D. report a space hotel to be completed by 2012

“知恩图报”是中国的传统美德。而在现实中,一些中学生对父母师长缺乏应有的感恩之心:他们谈起明星,都是一脸的虔诚;谈到父母则是一脸的漠然。不少学生能记得当红歌星的生日,却不记得父母的生日;更有的连老师的名字也记不清。请结合个人理解,谈谈你对这种现象的看法。

One possible version:
In our daily life, some students are lacking in the feeling of thankfulness to their parents and teachers. They admire the famous stars very much, but they show indifference to their parents. Some students can remember the birthdays of the stars, but they can't remember those of their parents, or even don't remember the names of their teachers.
It is a fashion for the students to chase the stars. Some students are crazy about them and busy collecting their information or photos all day. If so, they will waste much time that should be spent on their study, which will do harm to their study in the end.
Without our parents, we couldn't come to the world and live in the world. Without our teachers, we couldn't make any progress in our study. They all play a very important role in our life. Therefore, we should be thankful to them. Moreover, we should do what we can to repay them.
