Compassion and love are concepts that are often thought to be felt by humans only.As the most intelligent creatures to ever walk the earth,we tend to assume that we are the only ones who can feel emotions.We forget that the speechless beings who live here with us—animals—also have the same capability.

During a cold night in Ontario,Canada,a passer-by spotted something on the side of the road that made her stop—a shaking dog curled up in the snow.

When she approached the pup,she discovered that she wasn’t alone—she was cuddling five orphaned black kittens to keep them warm.

The dog surely could have found a safer place to stay for the night,but she chose instead to help not just herself but other stray animals as well.

The Good Samaritan called Pet and Wildlife Rescue and an animal control officer picked them up.When they got to the shelter,it was apparent that a close bond had already been formed between the dog and the orphaned kittens.The staff decided to name the kind dog Serenity in honour of her selfless act.

“It’s truly heart-warming!” a shelter spokesperson told The Dodo.“It had been a very cold night so these kittens would have had a very hard time surviving.”

Aside from requiring treatment for worm and flea infections,the orphaned kittens are now safe.Just like a proud and doting mother,Serenity insisted on checking on her babies regularly to oversee their progress.

The good news is that the kittens are now living with a foster family who will care for them until they are old enough to be adopted.Serenity,on the other hand,is still looking for a family.

According to the shelter,she loves zooming around in the yard and is big on playing.She is also quite jumpy,so she would do best in a home without small children.

NASA has a new job listing,and it’s no joke.The US space agency (机构) is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission (任务) to Mars.

A mission to Mars is no laughing matter.On average,the red planet is 140 million miles (225 million kilometres) away from Earth.A trip there would take around eight months in a small spacecraft.And Mars has a communications delay (延迟) of 20 minutes.This means that astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply,when an emergency happens.

“When you’re living with others in a confined space for a long period of time,such as on a mission to Mars,problems are likely to occur,” Jeffrey Johnson,a scientist at the University of Florida,told The Guardian. 

This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humour.“These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together,” Johnson said.

In stressful situations,perhaps humour is a way to know we aren’t alone.By laughing together,we share our stress.Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.

There are other examples of team “clowns”.One example is the journey to the South Pole (南极) led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.It was a difficult journey,full of danger.Adolf Lindstrom,a cook at Amundsen’s team,was a “clown”.He made people laugh through the whole journey.Amundsen later wrote that Lindstrom was the most valuable member of the team.

But if you’re hoping that your favourite TV comedian (喜剧演员) will fly to Mars,that probably won’t happen.

“Being funny won’t be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said.“They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.”

The original concept of building Foot Print Farms was simple.When Elliott returned to her hometown after graduation,she didn’t have to look any further than her state’s alarming health statistics to find a mission.Everywhere she went,there were reports of high blood pressure,obesity and heart disease.“The problem was already identified,” explains Elliott,“Too many Mississippians were seriously unhealthy and it didn’t take research to see that.And many of the state’s greatest health challenges could directly result from poor diet.”

These days,Foot Print Farms,which started with a few raised beds of herbs and vegetables,is making fresh,naturally grown food.“When speaking of the key to my success,the cooperative model works because we share the work and rewards,” notes Ayers-Elliott.“A perfect example is the Wingfield High School football team.To earn the money for equipment and other items,players committed to working five hours a week on the farm,and by the end of the summer they’d produced 1,000 melons and the profits from their sales helped to buy weights,T-shirts,sweat suits and pregame meals.But the lessons they learned about the rewards of hard work and working together to accomplish something were even more valuable products of their efforts.”

“It’s a model that can easily be learned in other places and I’m looking forward to seeing some of our current partners do just that—to take what they have learned here and spin it off in other communities,”Ayers-Elliott remarks.She is now looking forward to developing an agritourism area to the farm,where visitors can experience the farm life,learn new skills and take with them seeds of inspiration they can sow in their own communities when they return home.
