第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分60分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题3分,满分45分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about your amusement park. Last weekend, my friends and I were very excited to visit your amusement park. However, when we got there, we saw a lot of things that disappointed and shocked us.
My first complaint is about the rubbish all over the ground like Styrofoam cups, cigarette butts, used tissues and so on. I could never believe that you could have such a dirty amusement park.
My next complaint is about your rides. How could you have opened your amusement park if you were going to open one or two rides? This is ridiculous. And also, the line for the rides was so long! It was too crowded and a lot of people were really tired waiting and it took us almost an hour just to get on the rides.
Another complaint is about your food stall. The food was too expensive! How could we buy a set of meal for lunch for about $125?
My last complaint is about the safety features for the rides. How could you not put up warning notice for children to fasten their seat belts? They could have been in danger and you could be responsible for all of this!
As the manager of the park, you will improve the situation. For example, you should place more rubbish bins so that no one will throw any more rubbish on the ground. Also, ask a technician to repair the rides that have problems so that more people will go to your amusement park and enjoy themselves. In order not to keep people waiting so long, you can add more fun rides. In terms of the food, you have to decrease the price and sell more food and build up more food stalls. Last but not least, put up warning signs to warn people about their safety before riding rides.
Yours faithfully,
Benjamin Potts

As a child, I had a library phobia (恐惧症). I associated going to the library with doing research for a school project or a book report. I defined reading as work, and books came from the library, so going to the library for fun was out of the range of my thinking. Hard as they tried, my parents could not get me interested in reading. They purchased a few of the Hardy Boys series.
The books collected dust. The closest I came to wanting to read was The Big Green Book by Robert Graves, with illustrations by Maurice Sendak, a gift from my aunt. Its lead character, a boy of about 8, my age, discovered a book of magic spells. I was fascinated spells were not in the book, but I drew an imaginary magic circle with a long stick in my bedroom, stood inside the circle, took three deep breaths and made up my own spell. I never became invisible, which was my goal. This was my favorite book. I read it again and again. Certainly no need to go to the library.
Eventually, I started reading novels in my 20s. To avoid going to the library, which was only seven blocks from my Brooklyn home, I joined various book clubs. I didn’t mind having to buy a book a month as long as I didn’t have to go to the library.
My library phobia was cured 23 years ago when my family moved to Long Island. The East Meadow Public Library, a two-block walk from our home, became a regular destination for me and my family. My children were introduced to books through the children’s section with free programs that even my wife and I enjoyed. My children made friends, and my wife and I made friends with the parents.
My library card is faded, the edges are ragged and I renew my membership time and time again. I have given up mail-order books, and when I go to a store that sells books, I snap(拍照) pictures of the book jackets that enthrall me and put the book in reserve at the library.
4. What can we learn about the book The Big Green Book?
A. It appealed to the author’s parents. B. It contained some magic spells.
C. It is a gift from the author’s uncle. D. It inspired the author with some ideas.
5. What did the author prefer to do rather than go to the library?
A. To read novels. B. To go to book clubs.
C. To start a school. D. To purchase books on his own.
6. What made the author fall in love with the library at last?
A. He moved to a new place. B. He formed a new family.
C. He wanted to meet targeted people. D. He discovered a bonus of the library.
7. Which can replace the underlined word “enthrall” in the last paragraph?
A. puzzle B. frighten C. attract D. escape
C
The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual speed breakers(减速带) on major highways and roads, in order to check speeding and careless driving, and finally make its deadly roads a little safer. “We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers,” India’s transport minister Nitin Gadkari wrote.
The optical illusions(视觉错觉) are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier, India had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a safety hazard for high-speed vehicles. India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, over 200,000 people are killed by road accidents.
The use of optical illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmedabad for instance, a mother and her daughter, both artists, have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of 2016. The artists say their motto is “to increase the attention of drivers”, and that the concept has been successfully tested in accident-prone zones on a highway.
However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India's decision does not consider the safety of a large number of pedestrians. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.
8. Why are 3D paintings used on main highways and roads?
A. To make the surroundings more beautiful.
B. To attract the attention of tourists.
C. To reduce the rate of traffic accidents.
D. To show the advanced technology.
9. Which of the following words is closest to the meaning of “hazard” in paragraph 2?
A. Reminder B. Threat C. Regulation D. Theory
10. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4?
A. The use of optical illusions as speed breakers is controversial in India.
B. Philadelphia is the second place to use virtual speed breakers in the US.
C. The idea tested in Ahmedabad recently has been a failure.
D. The new policy of 3D zebra crossings must be carried out.
11. What do we know about 3D zebra crossings from the text?
A. They can immediately lower the death rate.
B. They have been widely used in India so far.
C. They are designed to increase drivers’ attention.
D. They are welcomed by both drivers and pedestrians.
D
Half off usually unaffordable products? Only $49.99 for that $100.00 dinner? That’s the magic of Groupon, but for some small business owners the “great business” offered by Groupon can be equal to the kiss of death. How could that occur?
The math of Groupon seems simple at a glance, but upon further inspection the numbers don’t add up when it comes to smaller businesses. A Groupon typically offers a 50% discount on a product or service; then the remaining profit is divided between Groupon and the small business. While Groupon has already received the profit in advance, the merchant is left waiting for their cut. Those worrying numbers are assuming the price cut is 50/50, which, in some cases, is being generous.
When you break it down to numbers, a Groupon deal seems disastrous, but it’s not only the numbers small business owners have to worry about. The point of Groupon deals is to attract new and hopefully long term customers. Yet, does this actually happen? The majority of consumers buying the Groupon are there for the bargain and don’t return after using their Groupon. CFHS Junior Angelita Pope stated, “I love the deals offered by Groupon! They can really save you so much money.” However, she went on to say that she hadn’t returned once to any of the businesses after using her Groupon.
For some small businesses, the pressure lies with the responses of their loyal customers, who watch as new faces get the same product or service for half the price that they have been paying for years. When you break it down, Groupon indicates that the business offering the deal is not only willing to be flexible with their price, but also that their product or service isn’t worth the price they’re charging for. When combining these factors, it’s no wonder loyal customers are put off by the idea of their favorite shop offering Groupons.
Now I by no means say Groupons have bad effects on all businesses; however, the storm of Groupon is actually a disaster for a small business.
12. What is good about Groupon?
A. It can offer a large discount.
B. It helps add up the numbers.
C. It can improve the quality of the product.
D. It brings small business owners more profit.
13. CFHS Junior Angelita Pope’s statement suggests that _______.
A. small business owners needn’t worry about deals
B. people like using Groupon in the same business
C. the purpose of Groupon is to promote business
D. Groupon may not bring customers back
14. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. New faces. B. Loyal customers.
C. Groupon dealers. D. Small businesses.
15. What could be the best title for the text?
A. A new business trend—Groupon dealing
B. The development of a Groupon company
C. The effects of Groupon on small businesses
D. A fantastic shopping experience—Groupon

Imagine that you’re an actor or actress performing in a play for the first time. You’ve learned all your lines and you know where to walk on stages. Waiting behind the closed curtain, you can hear the audience whispering. Then your big moment arrives! The curtain goes up, and the crowd falls silent. All you can see is the spotlight shining down on you. 16 The inside of your mouth is dry, and your hands are wet.
If you have experienced a moment like this, you know all too well what it means to have stage fright. It is one of the most common types of fear. 17 You can experience this kind of fear when playing sports, giving a talk, or even speaking in class.
18 The experience differs from person to person, but the same chemical process occurs on each of us. In reaction to anxiety, our bodies produce a chemical that prepares us to either fight or run away quickly. Scientists refer to this as our bodies’ “fight or flight” reaction. As a result, we feel the great energy that makes our hands sweat, our hearts races and our knees shake.
19 Practicing your performance and following some simple tips can help you calm down and manage the feelings caused by anxiety. Firstly, dress comfortably and appropriately. Secondly, before the performance, take keep breath and stretch to help relax your body. Thirdly, stay away from drinks that contain caffeine. 20 Instead, try a banana! Some doctors believe that eating a banana can help calm your heart and the rest of your body. Finally, when you look into a crowd, try to focus on particular people rather than the whole group. These tips have helped many people learn to deal with their fears.
A. These might make your heart race even faster.
B. Maybe you don’t have to be onstage to get stage fright.
C. Stage fright is really part of the body’s reaction to stress.
D. With practice, we can learn how to relax while playing sports.
E. Then you try to speak your lines, but nothing seems to come out.
F. There’s a time when stage fright prevents you from stepping onstage.
G. However, the good news about stage fright is that there are ways to deal with it.

Not only did this letter make her happy, but her response to it increased my 40 of happiness. I decided to write a gratitude letter to someone each month. Cultivating gratitude is a great skill to practice. Life is too short not to do it.
