I live on the West Coast of British Columbia with my husband and three children. Our day started like any other day. My husband left for work in the north of the town, which is an hour and a half’s drive. The younger children caught their bus to school ten minutes away. Our oldest attends high school and is a 40-minute drive away. I work at home in the office, working on the computer.
It was November 2006 and the news had reported gusty winds. When the winds started to get strong I shut the computer down and tried to phone my husband. I left a message telling him the winds were blowing at 80 to 90 km/hr. As I hung up the phone, I heard a tree crack. I went outside and stood in the driveway. Another tree exploded and my heart was racing.
When the school bus carrying the youngsters arrived, I ran to get them. No sooner had we made it to the house than another tree exploded. The children were clearly scared, so I loaded them up into the car and we parked in the middle of the yard, where no trees could land on us, it was starting to get dark.
My oldest son didn’t come home on the bus and my husband was stranded at work. I called the high school and reached my son. He said he was stranded and didn’t know what to do. I called a friend in town for help. He managed to get my son home to me. Finally, my husband managed to get home.
We had been prepared for such events, as we had a generator, candles, a wood stove, fresh water, batteries and two freezers full of food. We were without power for five days. But we didn’t panic―we had all the emergency equipment we needed. Thankfully, none of our neighbours were injured, but the damage was extensive. We are witnessing climate change. We need to be prepared.

Darwin noted that some human emotional expressions might have started as part of a physiological function: for example, exposing the teeth to bite food. The function, however, took on meaning and became a form of communication which signals anger.
The same may be true for the animals. Baby monkeys cry for attention. They also cry to signal to an adult that they want to be carried.
“Chimpanzees do make upset voice when they are being weaned (断奶) by their mothers or have lost their mothers or another individual,” says Anne Pusey, a professor at the University of Minnesota. “They whimper (呜咽) and cry and scream. When we hear these calls, the emotion involved seems obvious. However, they do not weep in the sense of producing tears. I have seen an adolescent male whimpering when he lost sight of his older brother with whom he had been traveling.”
Babies of many mammalian species, including rats, cry. Moreover, when a baby rat cries, often his mother brings the fallen pup back into the nest. This is probably a straightforward communication, as it is with humans. However, psychologists at the University of Iowa aren’t convinced.
The Iowan researchers can cause the same crying sounds by producing large decreases and
then increases in blood flow. The blood flow also goes down when baby rats get cold. Thus, they conclude baby rats cry in the same way that we sneeze. Of course the rat baby could be crying because he’s cold and wants his mother to know.
“All young mammals make cries when separated from their mother,” says Jaak Panksepp, a psychologist at Bowling Green State University. “If you’re willing to call this crying, then certainly other animals show this emotional response.” he says, “ Some of us take seriously that animals do have emotions.”
28. According to the first paragraph, what kind of emotion does “exposing the teeth” express?
A. Disappointment. B. Excitement. C. Anger. D. Happiness.
29. Which is one probable reason why young chimpanzees might be crying?
A. They meet their brother.
B. They have nothing to eat.
C. They are being breast-fed.
D. They are parted from their mother.
30. Under what circumstance will baby rats cry just like humans’ sneeze?
A. Their blood flow is decreased.
B. They feel cold and long for affection.
C. Their blood flow is increased.
D. Their mother brings them back home.
31. Where is the passage most likely taken from?
A. An animal journal. B. A physiology book.
C. A health magazine. D. A cultural newspaper.
D
Most people who own iPhones use them as their alarm clocks―making it very easy to check emails one last time before falling asleep and hard to ever feel away from work and social networks.
Several years ago, my boss fainted due to exhaustion after staying up late to catch up on work. She banged her head and ended up with five stitches (缝针)―and became what she calls a “sleep evangelist (传教士).” Now she leaves her phone charging in another room when she goes to bed and encourages her friends to do the same.
“I sent all my friends the same Christmas gift―a lovely alarm clock―so they could stop using the excuse that they needed their very attractive iPhones by their beds to wake them up in the morning.” she said.
If your phone wakes you up in the morning, it may also be keeping you up at night. A 2008 study showed that people exposed to mobile radiation took longer to fall asleep and spent less time in deep sleep. “The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are severely affected,” the study concluded.
A quarter of young people feel like they must be available by phone around the clock, according to a Swedish study that linked heavy cellphone use to sleeping problems, stress and depression. Unreturned messages carry more guilt when the technology to deal with them lies at our fingertips. Some teens even return text messages at midnight.
Most of us choose not to set limits on our nighttime availability. Nearly three quarters of people from the age of 18 to 44 sleep with their phones within reach, according to a 2012 Time poll. That number falls off slightly in middle age, but only people aged 65 and older are leaving the phone in another room as common as sleeping right next to it.
32. Why did the author’s boss start to enjoy sleeping?
A. Her friends encouraged her to sleep on time.
B. Mobile phones couldn’t wake her up on time.
C. Her friends sent her a lovely clock to wake her up.
D. She got hurt due to working too late.
33. Why did the author’s boss give her friends alarm clocks as Christmas gifts?
A. Alarm clocks don’t give off any radiation.
B. Alarm clocks are better at waking her friends up.
C. She advised them to replace phones with alarm clocks.
D. She used alarm clocks to remind them not to work too late.
34. What can we learn from the 2008 study?
A. Mobile radiation makes people unable to fall asleep.
B. Mobile phones can release 884 MHz wired signals.
C. Sleep can help people fight against radiation.
D. Components of sleep can be seriously affected by wireless signals.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How Mobile Phones Affect Sleep
B. Why Alarm Clocks Are Better than Phones
C. How we can sleep better at night
D. How Mobile Phones Affect Health

How to Rent Your House
Before handing the keys to your house over to a complete stranger for care, there are decisions you need to make. In fact, the decisions you make now, before searching for a tenant (房客), will make the biggest impact on the success of your rental. 36
What Condition Do You Want Your House in?
There is no end to the amount of improving you can do to your house before renting it out. 37 When is good enough, good enough?
A house should be clean, empty (unless you are offering it “furnished”, which is uncommon) and free from any major repairs at the time the tenant moves in.
Remember, the home does not need to be as fancy as you would want it to be. 38 Tenants will generally never take as good care of your house as you do―so don’t spend too much time or money making unnecessary upgrades that will only be ignored or broken.
Should You Use a Property Manager?
39 If you have the time, abilities, and energy to manage yourself―you can save a good deal of money by doing so. However, if you try to manage without the ability―it could end up costing you much more than what a property manager might charge.
How Much Can You Rent Your House for?
Luckily, discovering what the monthly rent will bear for your house is not difficult. 40 In business, market research means to get out there and find out what others in your industry are charging; learning how much to charge for rent is no different. Your house will generally rent for about the same amount as other properties that are of similar location, size and condition.
A. The problem becomes learning when to stop.
B. No one wants to be a landlord with those problems.
C. The following are some questions to answer before you rent out you house.
D. Have a professional carpet cleaner clean the carpets before showing the property.
E. Look around at other rentals in your area and try to see what the typical quality is.
F. The best way to determine how much your house will rent for is to simply do market research.
G. The decision about whether to manage yourself or hire a property manager cannot be made by anyone other than you.

W: David, you have eaten all the cookies in that box? They are really bad for your teeth.

W: I’m really sorry, dear. Just as I got off work, I was told I had to stay for a meeting.
Text 2
W: Have you seen that new horror movie with Tom Cruise?

W: You did? I guess it isn’t a very good horror movie, then...
Text 3
W: Have you heard? There’s been a fire at the old paper factory.
M: Are you sure? There’s nothing in the newspaper about it.
W: I just saw it on the 6 o’clock news. Turn on the radio and you might hear something about it there.
M: I’ll phone Bob. He always knows what’s going on.
Text 4
M: Excuse me. Is this seat taken?
W: I don’t think so. That man has got his books and notes and left a few minutes ago.
Text 5

W: What’s up? You look a bit down.
M: I got my results this morning for my end-of-year exams.
W: Oh, dear. Not good news, then.
M: No. No, I failed physics.

M: I did, but the questions weren’t what I expected. I tried to answer them, but …
W: Can you retake it?
M: Yeah, but I’ll have to take the course again next year.
W: What? Wait. You have to repeat the whole year?
M: Yeah. That’s normal, no?
W: Not back home, it’s not. When we fail an exam at university, we usually get the chance to retake it, but you don’t have to do the whole course again.

Text 10
W: Oymyakon, in East Russia, is extremely cold. Extremely low temperatures are frequent in Oymyakon, with temperatures going below minus 45o C regularly. Winters are long and cold and often last at least nine months. The summers are much warmer than the winters. Temperatures can rise to 35o C! but then there is the problem of mosquitoes ...
About 2,300 people live in Oymyakon. Life is very much the same as 100 years ago — apart from television. For example, there are no indoor bathrooms and people use ice instead of water from the tap. The valley used to be famous because some of the oldest people in the country lived there. Fiodor Arnsow, Oymyakon’s oldest-ever local people, died in 1967. He was 109. There are about 300 children in the local school. Up until recently, there didn’t use to be any heating in the school. The children did their classes in their coats. These young people dream of having mobile phones, an Internet café and a disco with a CD player that works. A local businessman, Alexander Krylov, built the town’s first hotel to attract the tourists to the area. Each of the ten rooms has hot and cold water. The most famous visitor until now is the Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor, who visited this place — in summer of course — on the back of a motorbike.

Lowry is one of Britain’s most famous artists, and was a close observer of his country’s social life in the era of industrialization and modernization. His works mainly depict (描绘) ordinary people on streets, in factories, parks and football fields. It has been said that the depiction of modern life by Lowry’s works was permeated (洋溢) with an atmosphere of sadness and loneliness, but also with respect and a sense of humor.

Should You Use a Property Manager?
39 If you have the time, abilities, and energy to manage yourself―you can save a good deal of money by doing so. However, if you try to manage without the ability―it could end up costing you much more than what a property manager might charge.

W: David, you have eaten all the cookies in that box? They are really bad for your teeth.
M: I know, but I was so hungry and you came back so late.
W: I’m really sorry, dear. Just as I got off work, I was told I had to stay for a meeting.
Text 2
W: Have you seen that new horror movie with Tom Cruise?
M: I did see the new Tom Cruise movie. It was good, but I thought it was a comedy.

W: What’s up? You look a bit down.
M: I got my results this morning for my end-of-year exams.
W: Oh, dear. Not good news, then.
M: No. No, I failed physics.
W: Oh, no, I’m sorry. What happened? I thought you revised really hard for it.
M: Oh, right. Well, here you have to repeat the whole course—and pay for it, of course.
