    While some Ukrainian music festivals have been canceled because of economic and political problems in the country, plenty remain for music lovers. Here’s a guide to the best Ukrainian music festivals this summer.
    Krayina Mriy

    Alfa Jazz Fest

    So far all tickets are booked, but a waiting list is available at www.alfajazzfest.com/buyticket. This annual festival held in Lviv will be interesting for both experienced and new jazz lovers. The performers on the lineup come from Ukraine, Japan, Cuba and the U.S.
    Koktebel Jazz Festival
    When and where: Aug.22-Sept. 6, Zatoka village, Odesa Oblast
    Koktebel Jazz is the biggest Ukrainian outdoor jazz festival. The Cinematic Orchestra, Parov Stelar, Nino Katamadze, Bonobo, Submotion Orchestra, Billy’s Band were the festival’s superstars in previous years. This year the list of festival’s participants and ticket price still remain unknown but the organizers revealed that apart from jazz the guests will be offered music lectures and movie screenings.
    Republica
    When and where: Sept. 4-7, Kamyanets-Podilsky, Khmelnytska Oblast
    Lineup: Fontaliza, Boombox, Brutto, Onuka, Megamass
    Rock music and street art festival Respublica will take place in Kamyanets-Podilsky, one of the most picturesque cities of western Ukraine. Lectures on urbanism and graffiti(涂鸦) classes will also be offered.

    Ian Mercer doesn’t set an alarm clock. The former Microsoft senior manager doesn’t check the weather, either. He doesn’t turn on lights, water the yard, or adjust the thermostat(恒温器). He doesn’t open the curtains, answer the phone, or call his children for dinner. There’s something unique about Ian’s home. He has programmed it to do all these things for him.
    Ian doesn’t live in a typical home or have a typical lifestyle. He spent over a decade designing the systems that feature in his unique home. He bought a home automation software package and then improved it.
    Now there are 79 sensors and monitors, and 48 light switches in his home. Lights turn on automatically(自动地) in rooms with people in them. Even being out, Ian can also control his home remotely using voice commands or his phone in any location. That is only the beginning of what this home has been programmed to do.
    It connects with online calendars, caller ID, online weather services, online address books, and email, among other things, to get Ian through his day. For example, if there is a meeting in Ian’s calendar, it will wake him up, open his bedroom curtains, start and set his shower to his desired temperature. It also informs Ian about traffic conditions.
    There is plenty more this home has been programmed to do. It keeps him updated on his favorite sports teams and scores. It even monitors online activity to check that Ian’s children are doing their homework. The “dinner’s ready” command stops operation of their computers and TVs. This is easier than asking his children to shut them down.
    Ian’s home is unique. Most homes are not this smart, but soon more homes will be technologically advanced.

    Greg Evans started to study film at Ryerson University, but had a change of heart and switched to social work at George Brown College in the second year. Yet the college recognized only one of Evans’ general-interest credits (学分)from Ryerson, and also made him take English all over again although he had passed it at university.
    “So I spent time and money taking a course I had already taken before”, complained Evans. “The system really needs to change.” Evans was part of a chorus of Ontario students on Monday cheering a new $73.7 million five-year plan to help students switch from college to university, and from university to college.
    After years of urging from students, the Ontario government set up a new Credit Transfer (转换) Innovation fund to help students move back and forth between the more hands-on courses of community college to the often broader academic focus of a university degree. “We hear horror stories about students who can’t get recognition from one institution for a very similar course at another, and in one case I believe the same professor was teaching them both,” noted Malloy after announcing the new fund.
    Individual colleges and universities have decided on nearly 500 joint deals to honor each other’s credits in certain courses. Each school is required to set targets for more credit-transfer agreements, and link these increases to provincial funding.
    More than 4,000 college graduates transfer to university in Ontario every year twice as many as eight years ago, noted Justin Fox, president of the College Student Alliance. Yet Ontario universities and colleges have been cautious about transferring credits, in part to avoid copying each other’s courses, noted Bonnie Patterson, president of the Council of Ontario Universities, who welcomed the increased flexibility.

    An 18-year-old who just finished high school has developed a revolutionary device (装置) which allows visually impaired or blind people to be more mobile-after coming up with the idea when he was 12.
    “To be considered is a real honor. It means the work we’re doing is really valuable,” Alex Deans said.
    The teen, from Ontario in Canada, began creating the tool after becoming curious while helping a visually impaired lady cross the street one day.
    “She told me that all existing devices only let users see in one direction so they can’t know what’s going on around them,” he told GOOD magazine, after seeing she only had a stick and guide dog-two things that are hard to come by.
    The device, known as iAid, uses GPS and ultrasonic (超声波的) technology to help visually impaired people get around safely. The belt-like tool comes with a control handle and works by using sound waves to discover objects in the users’ path and show how close things are to them. The iAid works much like a bat uses sonar (声呐).
    The teen’s invention has been attracting attention and it won the 2015 Weston Youth Innovation Award in May for which Alex was awarded $2,000 at a ceremony at the Ontario Science Center last month.
    Alex is now working closely with the team at the science center to hold an exhibition for his invention. He was also given the opportunity to give a presentation at We Day where speakers lecture about global issues across the US, Canada, and the UK.
    Alex will be starting at Montreal’s McGill University in the autumn, but hopes the iAid will be approved for US and Canadian rights so that, one day, the device will be available for those who really need it across the world.

    W: I’m not sure I like that idea.
    M: Well, it seems to work. Factories use it a lot. It makes the workers happy and they work better. In one factory, music increased production 4.5 percent. One fellow in San Francisco told me, if the music stops, somebody always runs to the telephone to complain.
    W: I really can’t believe it. Well…what about restaurants? Do they play the same music for dinner and lunch?
    M: No, I don’t know about that, but I do know that some hamburger places play fast music. When they started playing faster music, they found that a customer spent only 17 minutes eating. The time was 22 minutes before that.
    W: So they have more customers coming in and out to buy hamburgers, right?
    M: Yes. That’s good for business.
    W: Well, it may do them good, but it’s not making me forget I’m hungry. Let’s try to get that waitress to bring us a menu.

    Today in our Fashion program , I’d like to introduce a famous middle school student. She looks like any other schoolgirl, fresh-faced and full of life. Sarah Thomas is looking forward to the challenge of her new A-level course. But unlike her school friends, 16-year-old Sarah is not spending half-term resting. Instead, she is earning £6,500 a day as a model in New York.
    Sarah has been told that she could be Britain’s new supermodel, earning a million dollars in the next year. Her father Peter, 44, wants her to give up school to model full-time. But Sarah, who has taken part in shows with top models, wants to prove that she has brains as well as beauty. She is determined to carry on with her education.
    Sarah has turned down invitations to star at shows in Milan and Paris later this autumn in order to concentrate on her studies. After school she plans to model full-time for one year before going to university to get a degree in engineering.
    Sarah once said in an interview, “My dad thinks I should take the opportunity now. But at the moment, school comes first. Modeling is fun but the lifestyle is a little unreal. I don’t want to have nothing else to rely on when I can’t model any more.”
