If you are the kind of tourist who likes to visit places with outstanding landscapes and multicultural cities, then Asia is the place to go. Take a cruise (巡游) to Asia and you will not be disappointed.
    The Finest Asian Cruise Explorations
Tourists who want to visit several Asian countries understand that cruising there is the best alternative. You can decide to take a two-week cruise, starting from Sri Lanka to Thailand. There’s also a three-week cruise that starts off in China all the way to Japan. A most popular voyage is one that starts from Hong Kong to Singapore.
    The Best Time to Travel
When touring Asia, it’s best to understand that different cruise lines have different travelling timelines. You can be caught in the rain during your tour (October to December in Malaysia and December to February in Indonesia). Most cruises take place from December to the end of March.
    Booking Cruise-ship Tours
Given that you’ll probably be taking long flights to get to South Asia and the Far East, the
budget will be large, especially if you are visiting as a family. In addition, many people tour this region, so it would be best if you book early when the prices are more appealing.
    Activities
There are so many ports in Asia and this might bring a challenge if you want to get somewhere in time. Make sure you plan your day-trips in advance and follow the cruise line tours to avoid missing the boats. Apart from visiting the cities, you could also go to Borneo, Indonesia to see the orangutans ( 猩 猩 ). You can also hop across several islands from Bali, appreciate the colorful floats as well as the cherry blossoms in Japan and visit the floating fish farms in Vietnam.
    21. Which cruise is a very appealing one according to the author?
    A. From Hong Kong to Singapore. B. From Sri Lanka to Thailand.
    C. Flying to the Far East. D. From China to Japan.
    22. When is the best time available on tours in Indonesia?
    A. January. B. February. C. December. D. March.
    23. Where can you appreciate the colorful floats?
    A. In Bali. B. In Vietnam. C. In Japan. D. In Indonesia.

As years went by, I realized that one of the biggest problems of adults was worry. A large majority of my students were businessmen, executives, salesmen, engineers, accountants: a cross section of all the trades and professions — and most of them had problems! There were women in the classes — business women and housewives. They too had problems. Clearly, what I needed was a textbook on how to conquer worry. So again, I tried to find one.
I went to the New York great public library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street and discovered to my astonishment that this library had only twenty-two books listed under the title WORRY. I also noticed, to my amusement, that it had one hundred and eighty-nine books listed under WORMS. Almost nine times as many books about worms as about worry! Surprising, isn't it? Since worry is one of the biggest problems facing mankind, you would think, wouldn't you, that every high school and college in the land would give a course on “How to Stop Worrying”?
Yet, if there is even one course on that subject in any college in the land, I have never

heard of it. No wonder David Seabury said in his book How to Worry Successfully: “We come to maturity with as little preparation for the pressures of experience as a bookworm asked to do a ballet.” The result? More than half of our hospital beds are all occupied by people with nervous and emotional troubles.
I looked over those twenty-two books on worry on the shelves of the New York Public Library. In addition, I purchased all the books on worry I could find; yet I couldn't discover even one that I could use as a text in my course for adults. So I decided to write one by myself.
    24. What made the writer realize one of the adults’ biggest problems?
    A. His wide reading. B. His practical survey.
    C. His students’ real situation. D. His scientific research.
    25. The writer went to New York's great public library with the purpose of .
    A. getting a book for his teaching
    B. finding some material for his new book
    C. obtaining some information for his research
    D. borrowing some books on worms for his students
    26. What do David Seabury’s words in Paragraph 3 show?
    A. Worry is extremely common. B. We lack knowledge of worry.
    C. We show no interest in worry. D. Worry can hardly be controlled.
    27. What's the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
    A. To warn us of the possible danger of worry. B. To persuade us to get rid of worry.
    C. To explain why he wrote a book on worry. D. To tell us how to conquer worry.
    C
We hope you've finally made your peace with Pluto being downgraded from a planet to an ice dwarf (冰矮星),because we have some more jarring news for you: It seems your teachers may have been wrong about the number of continents on the earth, too.
Earlier this year, scientists published a report in the journal of the Geological Society of America detailing an eighth continent called Zealandia, roughly the size of India and almost completely hid itself under the Pacific Ocean east of Australia. Covering all of New Zealand as well as several nearby islands, Zealandia likely spent the best of its above-water days as part of the supercontinent Gondwana before fragmenting off Australia and Antarctica some 80 million years ago. This lost, underwater continent is just beginning to reveal its secrets, making for one of the most promising scientific discoveries this year.
While researchers have been aware of the 1. 9 million-square-mile mass for two decades, Zealandia has only recently become the object of serious study since the Geological Society paper argued that it fits all the criteria for a proper continent, including a continental crust (地壳 )that's distinctly separate from the seabed in terms of elevation, thickness, and geology. A team of 32 scientists from 12 countries just completed their first visit to six dig sites around Zealandia, where they drilled up more than 8,000 feet of sediment cores (沉积物岩心)that will help explain the lost continent's 80-million-year history.
Because there is no official body that formally recognizes continents, whether or not Zeal- andia ends up in future geography textbooks will come down to its acceptance by the scientific community at large, possibly with a little help from travelers like you.
    28. Why does the author mention Pluto? A.To express his or her pity.
    B. To introduce the topic.
    C. To go against the teachers.
    D. To explain the ice dwarf.
    29. What do we know about Zealandia in Paragraph 2?
    A. It neighbors Australia.
    B. It belongs to Gondwana now.
    C. It is similar to Antarctica in size.
    D. It has a history of over 80 billion years.
    30. What can most probably help discover more secrets about Zealandia?
    A. The sediment cores on Zealandia.
    B. The wildlife in New Zealand.
    C. The standard for a continent.
    D. The seabed near Antarctica. 31.Where does the text probably come from?
A.A travel brochure. B. An advertisement.
    C.A geography magazine. D. A science fiction.

    D
Some of the best research on daily experience is rooted in rates of positive and negative interactions, which has proved that being blindly positive or negative can cause others to be frustrated or annoyed or to simply tune out.
Over the last two decades, scientists have made remarkable predictions simply by watching people interact with one another and then scoring the conversations based on the rate of positive and negative interactions. Researchers have used the findings to predict everything from the likelihood that a couple will divorce to the chances of a work team with high customer satisfaction and productivity levels.
More recent research helps explain why these brief exchanges matter so much. When you experience negative emotions as a result of criticism or rejection, for example, your body produces higher levels of the stress hormone, which shuts down much of your thinking and activates (激活) conflict and defense mechanisms (机制). You assume that situations are worse than they actually are.
When you experience a positive interaction, it activates a very different response. Positive exchanges increase your body’s production of oxytocin, a feel-good that increases your ability to communicate with, cooperate with and trust others. But the effects of a positive occurrence are less dramatic and lasting than they are for a negative one.
We need at least three to five positive interactions to outweigh every one negative exchange. Bad moments simply outweigh good ones. Whether you’re having a conversation, keep this simple short cut in mind: At least 80 percent of your conversations should be focused on what’s going right.
Workplaces, for example, often see this. During performance reviews, managers routinely spend 80 percent of their time on weaknesses and “areas for improvement”. They spend roughly 20 percent of the time on strengths and positive aspects. Any time you have discussions with a person or group, spend the vast majority of the time talking about what is working, and use the remaining time to address weaknesses.
    32. The underlined phrase “tune out” in Paragraph 1probably means .
    A. stop listening B. change mind C. sing aloud D. be crazy
    33. What will happen if you experience negative emotions?
    A. The situations are to become worse.
    B. Much of your thinking will be prevented.
    C. You will feel an urge to become better.
    D. You’ll avoid conflicts with people.
    34. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
    A. Everybody needs a negative feeling.
    B. Positive interactions have greater effects.
    C. Our talk should center on improvements.
    D. The effect of negative feelings lasts longer.
    35. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. Harmful Negatives B. More Positive Interactions
    C. How to Be a Productive Manager D. Less Time on Strengths

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Technology can help solve the problem of bad, absent teachers in poor country schools
The UN's Millennium Development Goals included the ambition that by 2015 all the world's children would complete primary school. This has largely been achieved: nine out of ten children are now enrolled. 36 . Even though most of the world's children go to school, an awful lot of them learn pretty much nothing there. According to a recent World Bank study of seven sub-Saharan African countries, half of nine-year-olds cannot read a simple word and three-quarters cannot read a simple sentence. 37 . The same study found that only 7% of teachers had the minimum knowledge needed to teach reading and writing effectively. When classrooms were inspected to see whether a teacher was present, half the time the answer was no.
38 . It seems to bring about bigger improvements in poor countries than in rich ones. Some of the scarce resources being spent on teachers could therefore be better spent on ed-tech. That does not mean dumping computers on schools in the hope that children will understand

how to use them, a folly(荒唐事) on which plenty of money has been wasted. 39 , that gets things right more often than the teachers do, that adjusts itself to the child's ability, that sends teachers clues about what they are supposed to be teaching and that allows the authorities to check on whether the teacher is in the classroom.
Technology is no panacea (灵丹妙药). Good traditional teachers are not outdated, and are never likely to be. 40 . But ed-tech can help greatly — by monitoring pupils and teachers alike, assisting the best teachers and, most importantly, making up for the failings of the worst.

    A. The reason is terrible teaching
    B. Several recent studies suggest ed-tech can help
    C. Paying teachers more in the hope of employing better ones is not the answer
    D. Regrettably, the figure is not as impressive as it sounds
    E. Instead, it means providing schools with software that children can use without any help from an adult
    F. Devices can be taken to where there is a connection to upload or download the necessary information
    G. And authorities need to hold teachers to account

    (Text 2)
W: Will you grab some peanut butter from the store, please? I want to make some cookies later.
M: Sure thing, honey. I’ll grab some when I get coffee later. I think we’re running low on milk, too.
    (Text 3)
M: Did you get a present for Molly’s birthday?
W: Yes. You know she loves to listen to Johnny Holden — she’s got all his CDs — so when I saw this book all about his life, I knew that was the perfect present for her.
    (Text 4)
W: I’m looking for a place to have my client’s art show. We are really hoping to attract a large audience.
M: You should try the Fairmont Hotel. It’s expensive to rent, but it’s also right by the subway. It’s super convenient.
    (Text 5)
M: Was that the telephone ringing?
W: I didn’t hear anything. Sometimes when the windows are open, you can hear the neighbors’ phone.
M: Well. I’m expecting an important phone call, and I don’t want to miss it.
    (Text 6)
M: Hi. Rose. I just came back to my office. I went out to lunch. Anything new?
W: Dan, I’d like you to come home. The storm is really terrible.
    M: What happened?
W: The storm blew down the power line: the electricity went off. The children are crying in the dark, and I don’t know what to do.
M: Oh, dear. I’ll call the electricity company in a minute.
W: Would you come back right now?
M: Well, I’m leaving the office in half an hour.
W: Remember to get some candles on your way back.
    M: All right.
    (Text 7)
W: Oh. I wish that bus would come! My feet are freezing! I suppose I’ve been here for ten minutes or so.
M: That’s long enough in the winter.
W: This morning, the sun was shining ... even though they were predicting light rain.
M: But it started to snow one hour ago. They’re still predicting two or three inches.
W: Well, I won’t go into the office tomorrow. I’ll just work from home.
    M: What do you do?
W: I’m a lawyer. My office is around the corner.
M: Oh. I work in the same building, in that travel agency next to the lobby. I’ve seen you walk by several times. Stop in and have a cup of coffee sometime.
    W: OK. Thanks.
    (Text 8)
W: OK. Now, let’s find a place to go for your holiday. Do you have any preferences ... France ... Italy?
M: Oh, not France. Last year it was absolutely packed with teenagers. It was very noisy. We want somewhere quieter this year.
W: All right. Was it seven or ten nights you wanted?
    M: Oh, ten, please.
W: Right. Well, let’s start with Italy. Umm, we’ve got ten nights for 345 pounds, from Manchester, on the sixteenth.
M: No, that’s no good for me. We wouldn’t get back till the twenty-sixth, and my wife’s got to be back at work before that.
W: Umm ... how about Sweden? That would be 470 pounds, from Manchester again, on the eleventh.
M: Well, that seems too much.
W: All right. How about Spain?
M: Oh, that sounds great. We’ve never been there.
W: Let’s see now. We’ve got ten nights, from London, on the thirteenth, for 385 pounds.
M: Oh, wait a minute. We’d prefer a flight from the North somewhere, Manchester perhaps. Er ... OK, in this case, Sweden then.
    W: All right.
    (Text 9)
M: Will you go to any evening classes at the community center this year, Jess?
W: Maybe. Is the badminton club running this year? I enjoyed that.
M: Yes, but it is on Mondays now, at 6:30.
W: That’s a shame. I have to work late at the swimming pool on Mondays. I could go, but I’ll arrive late. What’s on Tuesdays? Is it tennis club again?
M: No. That’s on Wednesdays this year. On Tuesdays it’s football.
    W: Will you go?
M: To football? No, but I might go to tennis. I’ve just read my college timetable. I have Spanish grammar classes all afternoon on Wednesday. My brain always feels really tired after thoselessons, so I’ll enjoy hitting a ball hard after that!
W: Then maybe I won’t go to that! It sounds like it will be dangerous if you’re there! Is there anything on Thursdays?
M: Mr. Brown is running his usual club again, just like last year.
W: Oh! Mr. Brown’s Thursday film club! I enjoyed that. We had some great discussions.
M: Yes. I’m hoping to do that this year too. And on Fridays, the local singing group will be upstairs and the guitar group is downstairs.
W: Oh, yes. I tried the singing group a few years ago, but the songs were quite boring.
M: Well, I guess I’ll see you on Thursday evenings then!
    W: Yes!

Thank you for calling the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Here are the shows we’ll put on this month.
On October 10, we’ll put on Comedy in the Club Level. It’ll begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m. Local and nationally recognized comedians will make you laugh in the Green Room on that day. If you want a good laugh, don’t miss it.
The Young Irelanders will start on October 15. This talented group will perform some of Ireland’s best traditional song and dance. Folk, jazz and popular music come together with song and dance as they make old traditions new.
On October 20, a few bands will get together at our theatre to play music in honor of the Beatles, performing all the hits of this most popular band in the history of pop music. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. and lasts until 9:00 p.m.www.sdzxlm.com
On October 27, Broadway superstar Brenda Braxton will give an amazing performance of Broadway classics from her well-known shows. If you like Jelly’s Last Jam, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Chicago, and Sophisticated Ladies, you won’t want to miss her performance that night.
If you’re interested in any of these shows, come and watch. You won’t be disappointed.
