A 90-year-old man who runs a 117-year-old antique bookstore has become an Internet celebrity(名人).  Jiang Chengbo, the owner and third generation successor(继承者) of the bookstore, said that since a visitor put information about the bookstore on the Internet, antique book lovers from across the country have come here to look for books and take photos with him.

Located  in  Niujia  Alley, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, the bookstore covers an area of about 13 square meters and is filled with bookshelves on three sides with antique books.

The bookstore “Wenxueshanfang”, which translates literally(照字面地) into “literature mountain house”, was founded in 1899. At the time, the bookstore had a large number of antique books, some of which were rare books. Hearing of the bookstore's good reputation, Xu Shichang (1855~1939), president of the Republic of China between 1918 and 1922, honored the store by writing the plaque(牌匾)  for it.  The bookstore rose to fame afterwards and many famous literary superstars of the time became frequent visitors. It was a common scene to see scholars and writers have discussions in the store. In 1956, the bookstore was merged into(并入) stateowned Suzhou Ancient Bookstore and the “literature mountain house” disappeared.

But Jiang's heart was always in the bookstore. When he was 16 years old, Jiang began to help his grandfather to run the bookstore. After retirement, he was still involved in exploring, rescuing, repairing and preserving antique books. Decades of working with antique books has made Jiang a famous scholar of antique editions. As Jiang gets older, Jiang's children try to persuade Jiang to give up the bookstore. Jiang repudiated their persuasion, saying, “This is the career of my life.  As long as I can walk, I will never give up.”

In the age of the Internet, Jiang's bookstore welcomes a lot of new antique book fans, who know of the store through the Internet. They visit Jiang from all over China, turning him into an “Internet celebrity”. In 2015, the bookstore was awarded as an “excellent bookstore of Suzhou”.

What do Tom Sawyer and Jumping Frogs have in common? Stories about both of them were created by one man: Mark Twain. Twain was four years old when his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, located on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was fascinated with(使……入迷) life along the river—the steamboats, the giant lumber(木头) rafts, and the people who worked on them.

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is one of Twain's best loved short stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days, which originated in the late 1950s and became national in the 1960s. Children enter their frogs in the jumping contest during National Tom Sawyer Days. There's also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest.  The idea for this contest comes from a scene in Tom Sawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he makes them believe that it's fun to paint, and they join in the “fun”.  By the end of the day, the fence has three coats of paint!

Although the story of Tom Sawyer is a fiction(虚构的事), it's based on facts. If you go to Hannibal, you'll see the white fence, which still stands at Twain's boyhood home.

    语篇解读:本文主要介绍了马克·吐温的两部作品及汤姆索亚日期间的一些活动。

8.Which of the following statements about Mark Twain is TRUE?

    A.He was born in Hannibal.

B.He enjoyed his life in Hannibal.

C.He spent most of his childhood on the Mississippi.

D.He often went rafting(坐船漂流) on the Mississippi with his parents.

[解析] 细节理解题。从第一段第四句“Twain grew up there and was fascinated with life along the river...”可知B正确。

    [答案] B

9.Tom Sawyer Days were created ________.

    A.about forty years ago

B.in memory of a great writer

    C.shortly after Twain's death

D.to improve kids' interest in reading

    [解析] 推理判断题。第二段说全国汤姆索亚日期间会举办不同的活动,旨在颂扬这两部作品,由此推理是为纪念这两部作品的作者马克·吐温的。

    [答案] B

10.Who will win the fence painting contest?

    A.Bob, painting the longest.

    B.Julia, painting most carefully.

C.Jim, painting in the newest way.

D.John, painting in the shortest time.

[解析] 推理判断题。由第二段第四句“There's also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest.”可推知能在最短的时间内漆完篱笆的将获胜,故选D。

B.the story of Tom Sawyer is based totally on Twain's imagination

C.Twain's old house is painted by the fence painting competitors

D.Twain's old house is visited by people from all over the country

[解析] 推理判断题。至今仍伫立在马克·吐温孩童时期的家外的那片白色篱笆是用来说明句首结论的——“Although the story of Tom Sawyer is a fiction(虚构的事), it's based on facts.”因为从上一段可知《汤姆·索亚历险记》中有与此相关的情节。

    [答案] A

    D

    (2018·郑州市高三第二次质量预测)

There were many famous poets from different periods of time in Chinese history, and thousands of their poems are still read and appreciated today.

To arouse people's interest in those classic Chinese poems and promote cultural heritage,China Central Television (CCTV)  produced a TV show—Chinese Poetry Conference. The finale(终场) of the hit show's second season was shown on Feb. 7 this year.

Wu Yishu, 16, who studies at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, came out on top. In an earlier episode(一集), Wu wowed the audience when performing in a section entitled “Feihualing”. The game's theme was “yue”, meaning “moon” or “month” in Chinese. She recited the lines from the Classic of Poetry, the earliest collection of poems in China: “In July, the crickets(蟋蟀)  are in the field. In August, they are in the yard. In September they are at the door. In October, they enter and crawl under our beds.”

“I really admire her knowledge of poems,” said Huang Zijin, 16, a Senior 2 student from Ningbo High School in Zhejiang Province. “The first time I saw her wearing traditional Han clothing on TV, I was very impressed by her classical looks. She fulfills all my fantasies about classic Chinese women's talents. What's more, she always appears so calm throughout the show, which is very unusual for her age.”

As the old saying goes, “One who is filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance.”

“Learning poems isn't about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one's view of life and developing one's inner world,” said Li Bo, an expert guest at the Chinese Poetry Conference's second season.

When it comes to teaching people about poetry, Li Dingguang, the show's academic advisor, suggested that teachers should explain more about the beauty of the poetry from both the aesthetic(美学的) an emotional sides, and guide the students to lose themselves in the poems' rhythmic(有节奏的) and rhyming lines.

“Although the amount of ancient Chinese poetry in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools has increased, many students still learn them for exams,” Li Dingguang told China. org. cn. “Therefore it's important to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry.”
