My violin is like a soul mate that whispers words of wisdom to me. Together, we’ve gone through both tears and happiness.
About 12 years ago, I made acquaintance with it following an order from my mom. Many boring hours were spent practicing it. And to make things worse, the disappointment in my teacher’s eyes when I played the wrong notes was like an invisible hammer, striking on my heart. One day, I finally decided: I hate it!
By chance, things changed when I was seven. I was at home lying on the sofa, wondering how those famous violinists dealt with this terrible dilemma. I searched online for the E-minor Concerto, a well-known violin work by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, and listened to it.
A beautiful and mysterious sound came from the violin as the bow moved across it. It was like the music slid over the flowers, rose up, and started to fill the air. The violin’ s voice woke up the sun, made the trees green, and freshened the air. As the music changed, the sky turned back to gray. A gloomy shade covered the grass as all the sunshine disappeared. I could hear children crying and men shouting. It was like an invisible claw had grabbed my heart tightly, making it unable to beat.
That glorious day set off my passion and interest in violin — I grabbed mine and never let it go. Before the memories faded, I stared at my instrument. Without hesitation, I picked it up, rosined(用松香擦) the bow, and began to play. Peace filled my heart.
My violin has been by my side for 12 years. When I feel happy, an energetic tune makes it even better; when I’m deep in sorrow, a peaceful tune washes it away, when I’m walking on air, feeling especially pleased with my achievements, solemn(庄严的) tunes calm me down. Gradually, it has become a part of my life.
My violin, shall I compare you to a summer’s day?
24.What further contributed to the author’s dislike of violin-playing?
A.Orders from mum. B.Disappointment in the teacher’s eyes.
C.Loss of passion for violin. D.Boredom of practice.
25.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.The scenery outside the room was quite attractive.
B.The weather actually changed because of the tune.
C.The sudden change made the author’s heart unable to beat.
D.The author’s feeling was influenced by the music.
26.Why did the author pick up the violin again?
A.A famous tune aroused his interest and passion.
B.The invisible hammer and claw are gone.
C.The beautiful imagination changed his attitude.
D.He was crazy about Felix Mendelssohn’s works.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Deep love for music B.My dislike and like of violin
C.An inspiring story of violin D.Musical soul mate—violin
C
When Tom was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when Tom reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood friends. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
28. What do we know about Tom?
A. He received little love from his family. B. He had few childhood friends
C. He enjoyed his career and marriage. D. He was envied by others in his childhood.
29. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by_______________.
A. recording the boys’ effort in school B. comparing different sets of scores
C. evaluating the men’s mental health D. measuring the men’s problem solving ability
30. What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Clear and definite B. Quick to react C. Having a thin edge D. Sudden and rapid
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Competent adults know more about love than work.
B. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.
C. Love brings more joy to people than work does.
D. Independence is the key to one’s success.
D
A shark moving around the coastline is normally a worrying sight, but this waterborne drone(无人机)threatens floating rubbish instead of people.
Developed by Dutch company RanMarine, the WasteShark takes nature as its inspiration with its whale shark-like mouth. Responsible for collecting waste, the drone will begin operations in Dubai Marina in November after a year of trials with local partner Ecocoast.
According to RanMarine, the WasteShark is available in both autonomous and remote-controlled models. Measuring just over five feet by three-and-a-half feet(1.5 meters by 1.1 meter),it can carry up to 352 pounds of rubbish(159.6 kg)and has an operational battery life of 16 hours.
By 2016 there were approximately 150 million tons of plastic in the world's oceans. One paper from December 2014 estimated that over a quarter of a million tons of ocean plastic pollution was afloat.
"WasteShark also has the abilities to gather air and water quality data, remove chemicals out of the water such as oil,and heavy metals, and scan the seabed to read its depth and outlines,"said Oliver Cunningham, one of the co-founders of RanMarine. "Fitted with a collision-avoidance system, the drone uses laser imaging detection and ranging technology to detect an object in its path and stop or back up if the object approaches."
"Our drones are designed to move through a water system, whether it's around the perimeter(周边) or through the city itself. The drones are that last line of defense between the city and the open ocean," added Cunningham. "WasteSharks are operating in Dubai, South Africa and the Netherlands and cost $ 17,000 for the remote-controlled model and just under $ 23,000 for the autonomous model."
Dubai-based operator Ecocoast has two WasteShark drones. Co-founder Dana Liparts says they will clean waterfronts for clients including hotels and environmental authorities and that Ecocoast' intention is to have the collected rubbish recycled or upcycled. However, Liparts argues that cleaning waterways doesn't have a one-size-fits-all solution and requires a combination of new technology, preventative measures and changing people's attitudes towards littering.
32. What do we know about the WasteShark?
A. It can frighten sharks away. B. It is an ocean explorer.
C. It can catch fish instead of people. D. It is a rubbish collector.
33. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. The causes of ocean pollution. B. The dangers of using plastics.
C. The severity of ocean garbage pollution. D. The way of solving ocean protection.
34.What will the WasteShark do with an approaching object?
A. Fly over it. B. Break it into pieces.
C. Swallow it. D. Avoid crashing into it.
35. Which of the following ideas does Liparts agree with?
A. More measures should be taken to make water clean.
B. The WasteShark should be used more widely.
C. The production cost of WasteSharks should be reduced.
D. People should take a positive attitude to new technology.

26.Why did the author pick up the violin again?
A.A famous tune aroused his interest and passion.
B.The invisible hammer and claw are gone.
C.The beautiful imagination changed his attitude.
D.He was crazy about Felix Mendelssohn’s works.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Deep love for music B.My dislike and like of violin
C.An inspiring story of violin D.Musical soul mate—violin

Dear Tom,
I'm writing to discuss with you the matter of health. Health is far more important thanwealth.
Good health enables us to enjoy our life and achieve what we hope for in our career. On the
contrary, poor health leads to nothing.
How can we keep healthy? Here is some advice. Firstly, it is very important for us to take
more fruits and vegetables because they provide vitamins, and we have to keep a balanced diet.
So we should avoid food with lots of sugar and fatwhich is rich in sugar and fat. Secondly, we'd
better exercise every day to make our bodies strong. Besides, we have to avoid too much work
pressure. Finally, we have to get rid of those bad habits that damage our health, such as drinking
and smoking.
In conclusion, if we stick to theadvice given above, we will lead a healthy life.
Yours
Li Hua
