Idioms are one of the hardest parts of learning a language. For those of you who don't know, an idiom is a phrase which has a meaning, but the meaning is not clear from the words themselves. If you translate an idiom word for word, it sometimes makes no sense at all. They are like puzzles and even native speakers can get confused when someone uses a phrase that they've never heard of.
With that in mind, here are five common English idioms that you can use in a variety of Situations.
1.Get your act together (Meaning: you need to improve your behaviour/work)
This might be something your teacher says to you if you score badly in an exam or if you misbehave in class. You can also use it to talk about people in general. For example, if your friend is being mean or nasty for no reason, then you can tell them that they need to get their act together.
2.Pull yourself together (Meaning: calm down)
This is a somewhat impolite way of telling someone that they are overreacting and that they need to relax. Only use this if you think the person you are speaking to is getting upset over something insignificant. If your friend tells you that their close relative has died, it is NOT the time to tell them to pull themselves together.
3.I'm feeling under the weather (Meaning: I'm sick)
Yes, it's longer and more difficult to say than 'I'm sick', but if your English teacher asks you why you haven't done your homework, he or she is more likely to forgive you if you say that you were feeling under the weather. You may not have done your English homework, but your teacher might be impressed that you know how to make eloquent excuses in a foreign language.
4.It's a piece of cake (Meaning: it's easy)
I don't know why this means what it does, but sometimes you just have to accept that English people use weird phrases.
5.Break a leg (Meaning: good luck!)
This is perhaps one of the most confusing yet well-known English idioms. If someone says this to you, do not take offence or think they are threatening you; they are just wishing you luck. It is most often used for people wishing success to actors and actresses before they perform on the stage, but it can be said in other situations, too.
All in all, learning a new language can be challenging. It's definitely not a piece of cake, especially when there are so many confusing idioms. However, with enough hard work and interest, you will succeed in no time. Break a leg!
l.Which idiom is proper for you to say to your worried classmate who is to take part in the 800-metre race at the school sports meet?
A.Get your act together. B.Pull yourself together.
    C.Break a leg. D.It's a piece of cake.
2.How should you respond when you hear your deskmate say, "I am feeling under the weather."
    A."What's wrong with you?"
    B."Don't worry. Let's call 120."
C."Get up and finish your homework."
D."Why don't you take an umbrella with you?"
3.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE about idioms?
A.They sometimes make no sense at all.
B.Native speakers have trouble understanding idioms sometimes.
C.Idioms are the hardest part of learning a language.
D.We can guess the meaning of an idiom from the words in it.
    B
I spend half of my life with my mother and the other half with my father. My father lives with a twenty-pound cat named Tofu. He calls me his favorite daughter. I am an only child.
My father's apartment is quite different from any other person's living space. Except for my room, there is no furniture. He doesn't like sofas or any comfortable chairs, so he has only a drawing table, a desk and his bed. He spends a lot of time lying on the studio floor. That's how he thinks, he says. Then he does yoga
He has a big kitchen, and on top of the refrigerator is an old clock he winds every week for good luck. The last time the clock stopped, my father's car was towed(被警察拖走) and some other terrible things happened, so he has become very superstitious (迷信的) . When he goes out of town, he hires someone to feed Tofu and wind the clock so it won't stop.
The one thing he has plenty of is house rules. You have to take off your shoes when you come in. He won't allow anyone who wears a baseball cap into his house. He says only baseball players should wear baseball caps and only the catchers should wear them backward. Every time I go to stay in his house, he makes up a new rule. “House rule number 579, no television programs with laugh tracks!”he will say. But then be can never remember the numbers, so they change constantly.
The rule that he always enforces is the one that requires me to write a two-page essay anytime I want something. He didn't speak English until he was sixteen, and he had a hard time learning to write it, so he wants me to become a good writer at an early age. This ritual(仪式)started when I asked him if I could have my ears pierced when I was nine. He said it was very cruel and told me I couldn't do it until I was thirty-five. But l kept asking him, and he finally said that if I wrote an essay and I could persuade him in writing why I wanted holes in my ears, maybe he would say okay. I wrote my first essay for my father, and after one month of writing and rewriting, he finally. gave me his permission.
4.What is unusual about the father's apartment?
    A.It has a large kitchen.
B.The father does yoga at home.
    C.It is scarcely furnished.
D.The father spends a lot of time on the floor.
5.Which of the following is an example of the house rules?
A.Someone is hired to feed Tofu.
B.You can't wear shoes in the house.
C.Baseball players are not allowed into the apartment.
D.The writer can't watch television programs in the apartment
6.Which of these statements about the clock is TRUE?
A.It is not an automatic one.
B.Her father doesn't like the clock.
C.It can bring good luck to them.
D.Someone is hired to wind it every week.
7.We can infer that the writer's father
    A.was a famous writer
B.was born in the United States
C.was a caring and strict father
    D.speaks more than one language

A university in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, has installed facial recognition systems in classrooms to monitor students' behavior, sparking a heated debate online. China Pharmaceutical University recently installed the systems in two pilot classrooms as well as school gates, dormitory entrances, the library and laboratory buildings.
Xu Jianzhen, director of the university's library and information center, told TbePaper.cn that the systems will help teachers check student attendance and monitor behavior during the lectures. "In the past, some students just checked their attendance and ditched the class or asked other students to check the attendance for them. Now with facial recognition, that would no longer be a problem," be said. "The moment you enter the classroom, the camera will monitor you all the way through and can tell how long you lower your head, whether you're playing with a smart phone, whether you're dozing off or reading other books," he added.
The news has raised wide debate on Chinese social media, with many questioning if the cameras will violate students' privacy. A Sina Weibo user said: "I oppose such methods, and it is not clear whether the systems are developed by the school itself or by third parties. If it is the latter, is there any regulation of security? Where will the information be sent and stored?"
Gan Xiangsi, a senior student from the university, said she welcomed the systems being applied in dormitories and libraries as this can help prevent personal belongings being stolen, but it is not necessary to use such technology in the classroom. "If the teacher teaches well, the students will be interested," she said. "On the contrary, this kind of monitoring will make everyone feel resistant."
China Pharmaceutical University is not the first university to use facial recognition technology on campus. Many universities across the country have installed cameras at campus entrances to ensure safety. But many are also hesitant when it comes to applying such technology in classrooms.
"This issue has been debated for quite a long time," Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, told China National Radio. According to Chu, teachers and students who are under observation might not behave as they normally would since they know they are being watched. "Cameras should not be installed in classrooms merely for effective teaching purposes," Chu said, as teachers are also being observed. He agreed that "students' privacy needs to be protected". He also said that not putting classrooms under control is an important principle. “If you don't follow this principle, students will falsify and disguise their state of listening, and teachers may also not perform as well. Then real teaching will not occur," he added.
8.Which of the following is NOT the function of facial recognition systems?
    A.To help check student attendance.
    B.To help monitor student behavior.
    C.To help ensure student safety.
    D.To help protect student privacy
    9. What does the underlined word "ditch" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A.abandon B.attend C.dislike D.enjoy
10.What's Chu Zhaohui's attitude towards installing cameras in classrooms?
    A.favorable B.indifferent C.unfavorable D.neutral
11.What's the writer's purpose of writing this passage?
A.To introduce the function of facial recognition systems.
B.To express his preference for facial recognition systems.
C.To express his strong dislike for facial recognition systems.
D.To introduce people's different attitudes to facial recognition systems.

If you love eating and drinking for free and are looking to make some pocket money, there's a job in China with your name on it. A new type of online service allows people to hire others to eat or drink their favorite treats, either to cure their boredom or satisfy their appetite without the calories that usually come with it.
Chinese media recently reported on an increasingly popular service on online platform Taobao that's as startling as it is appealing. People can now go online and hire others to consume certain foods and drinks, and ask them to provide video evidence of them eating or drinking the said treats.
Fees usually range from two to nine yuan ($0.30 - $1.35) plus the cost of the food. It's not exactly a get-rich-quick job, but there are quite a rot of people willing to do it for the free treats alone.
“Bubble tea drinking" is a particularly popular service, as the chewy tapioca(木薯粉)balls and popping drink is all the rage in Asia these days, but there are also ads from people willing to eat fried chicken or hot pot for anyone willing to pay for them.
Advertised as being "fat-free" and "free of queues", those who pay for the service will receive the full experience, which includes a 360-degree video of the drink, photos, and a detailed description. Prices of the service are based on the drink's sweetness level, its price, and popularity. Some clients even require a short written review to be sure that the person they hired actually does what they are supposed to.
Sellers explained that most customers buy their "Bubble tea drinking" service maybe because they're trying to shake off desires while they're on a diet. Drinking bubble tea by proxy may help customers avoid high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and other health problems that the sugar-laden drink may cause.
So why would anyone pay a total stranger to enjoy a treat rather than consume it themselves? Well, apparently, the online service is so cheap that some people simply do it out of boredom, while others get satisfaction from watching others indulge in their favorite treats.
This indulging-by-proxy service(代享受服务)has received a lot of attention on social media in China, with some people describing it as the job of their dreams.
12.What kind of people may buy the new type of online service?
    A.Those who are boring.
B.Those who are trying to lose weight.
C.Those who love eating and drinking for free.
D.Those who are looking to make some pocket money.
13.Which is the reason for many people being willing to be hired for the new job?
A.That they can make a fortune.
B.That the foods and drinks are cheap.
C.That they can consume the treats for free.
D.That they can realize their dreams.
14.Why does the author mention "bubble tea drinking" in Paragraph 4?
A.To prove that the new type of service online is popular.
B.To list an example of the new type of service online
C.To show bubble tea is greatly welcome in Asia.
D.To promote the new type of service online.
15.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Indulging-by-proxy service online helps lose weight.
B.Boredom leads to indulging-by-proxy service online.
C.People hold different opinions on indulging-by-proxy service online.
D.Indulging-by-proxy service online is getting increasingly popular.

Even if you love fish, actually cooking it in your kitchen can be a commitment. Long after the fish has been eaten, the pots washed, and the plates put in the dishwasher, the fish smell still exits. 16 Luckily, expert cooks have figured out how you can cook your fish without leaving a smell that exists for days.
First off, know that truly fresh fish really shouldn't have much of an odor(气味)at all. So if you unwrap a package of fish and take a step back from the smell that greets you, throw it away because it's not fresh. 17
A lot of the smell from cooking fish is because of the cooking method you use. 18
However, other techniques, like cooking fish in paper, can put a lid on the problem before it starts. Cleaning experts recommend minimizing the odor before cooking by bathing fish in milk or a solution of lemon and water.
If it's too late and your home is beginning to smell like the parking lot of a seafood joint, then Good Housekeeping suggests mixing together vinegar and water and letting it boil for several minutes to get rid of the smell.
19 Shut any inside doors to keep the smell from spreading throughout the house and into bedrooms, but open up kitchen windows and doors to allow the smell to get out. And be sure to wipe any spills and throw away any trash containing fish bits. 20 And the resulting sweet scent will make everyone forget about any fishy odor.
A.Frying can cause a big smell problem.
B.Prepare your home ahead offish cooking time.
C.Here's how to make every room smell amazing.
D.Cooking fish wrong brings about terrible smells.
E.When all else fails, bake up some cookies for dessert.
F.But, admittedly, even the freshest fish can get a bit of smell once it's cooked.
G.It can be enough to put even the most devoted fish eater off cooking it regularly.

    书面表达
    Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Li Hua, a university student from China. My two friends and I are planning to visit New Zealand in February next year. To fully enjoy our one-week holiday, I am writing to make some inquiries about our travel.
We will arrive in Auckland by plane and plan to travel the North Island by bike. Could you give us some idea of the cost of bike hire for one week? Besides, would you recommend somewhere we can reach by bike to learn about Maori culture? As New Zealand is the birthplace of bungee jumping, we are eager to have a try. Is there a place with breathtaking scenery where we can experience the exciting sport? Most of all, we would like to meet New Zealanders of our own age, and we are wondering if you could suggest a way we could achieve this.
Finally, can you give us some advice on inexpensive accommodation? We don't mind B & B or hostels if this type of accommodation is available.
Thank you for reading my letter. I am looking forward to your reply.
    Yours faithfully,
    Li Hua
