过去进行时由“was / were +动词-ing形式”构成，表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间正在进行的动作。常与过去进行时连用的时间状语有at eight yesterday mrning, at that time, at this time yesterday, frm eight t ten yesterday mrning等。
e.g. I was reading in the library at this time yesterday.The kids were watching TV at eight last night.
肯定式：主语+ was / were +动词-ing形式(+其他).
e.g. I was having an English class at that time.
否定式：主语+ wasn’t / weren’t +动词-ing形式(+其他).
e.g. My brther wasn’t sleeping at five yesterday afternn.We weren’t swimming at this time yesterday.
疑问式：Was / Were +主语+动词-ing形式(+其他)?其肯定回答为：Yes, 主语(人称代词)+ was / were.否定回答为：N, 主语(人称代词)+ wasn’t / weren’t.
e.g. —Were yu walking the dg at this time yesterday?—Yes, I was.—N, I wasn’t.
三、while和when引导的时间状语从句
过去进行时还可用于含when或while引导的时间状语从句的复合句中。
e.g. He was reading in the library when the rain came.When Alice called me yesterday, I was having dinner with my family.
若在主句动作进行期间，when引导的从句的动作发生了，则主句用过去进行时，从句用一般过去时。
e.g. I met my teacher when / while I was walking the dg in the park.
若when / while引导的从句的动作正在进行期间，主句的动作发生了，则从句用过去进行时，主句用一般过去时。
e.g. While Linda was playing the pian, Jenny was ding her hmewrk.
while引导的状语从句还可表示从句的动作正在进行的同时，主句的动作也在进行之中。
when引导的从句中的动词可以是瞬间动词，也可以是延续性动词，而while引导的从句中的动词是延续性动词。
四、一般过去时与过去进行时的区别
(1) 一般过去时表示过去发生的动作或存在的状态等，谓语动词用动词的过去式，常与yesterday, last week, in 2021, ten minutes ag 等表示过去的时间状语连用。
e.g. Li Hng bught a handbag fr her mther yesterday.I saw Mike in the library a few minutes ag.I had a picnic with my family last Sunday.The Greens mved huse last year.
(2) 过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间内正在进行或发生的动作，由“was / were + v.-ing形式”构成，常与at this time yesterday, at that time, frm eight t ten yesterday mrning等时间状语以及when, while等引导的时间状语从句连用。
e.g. What were yu ding at this time yesterday?Mary was reading a nvel frm eight t ten last night.My brther was playing cmputer games when I went int his rm.
(3) 一般过去时往往表示在过去某一时间已经完成的动作；而过去进行时则表示动作在过去的某一时间段或时间点正在进行，尚未完成。
e.g. Henry watched a mvie yesterday.亨利昨天看了一部电影。(动作已结束)Henry was watching a mvie at nine last night.亨利昨晚九点在看一部电影。(动作在当时正在进行)
