New Year’s Day this year, I sat at the breakfast table, tired. My husband lked puzzled and asked, “Why d yu
d this t yurself every year?” I have t admit that part f what I d arund the winter hlidays seems almst
instinctive. It’s as if I’m driven by the ancient need t mark the darkness f winter with my little bit f light. My
answer t my husband’s questin is that I believe ne f the mst imprtant things I can d while I’m n this planet

When my children were yung, my husband lst his jb. It tk a decade t recver emtinally and

I lve bks. When I was a child, I carried bks everywhere, even t the dinner table and class. In my
pre-digital childhd, audibks barely existed in my wrld. They were nly fr lng car rides r dull chres like
cleaning my rm while listening t “American Girl” bks n CD.
With the rise f smartphnes, audibks have bmed, despite criticisms that “they aren’t real bks” and
“listening isn’t real reading.” I’ll admit that I used t be n the ther side f this issue, insisting that audibks
didn’t cunt because they allwed passive listening. I gt annyed with peple when they included audibks in
“bks read” lists. But I’ve cme arund since then, bth n a persnal and scial level.
I still believe reading a bk and listening t an audibk are distinct, fr they engage different brain
prcesses, each with unique prs and cns. One f my biggest annyances is spacing ut during an audibk and
realizing I have n idea where I stpped paying attentin. And I’ll always prefer print bks. Yet I’ve grwn t
appreciate audibks’ special strengths: talented vice actrs giving characters particular vices, r adding
meldies t written lyrics. A perfect example is Cary Elwes’ As Yu Wish: Incnceivable Tales frm the Making f
The Princess Bride, in which he and ther Princess Bride cast members narrate. And it’s an experience n

Smetimes I prefer an audibk. It’s the nly way t read if I’m n a lng drive r if I want t multitask.
Smetimes I prefer a print bk. I lve the way bks feel in my hands. I lve flipping pages, and I lve cllecting

A new study has fund that breathing des mre than just mve air in and ut f yur lungs — it culd even
be used t identify wh yu are. Scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute f Science discvered that each persn

Hwever, the device still has drawbacks: it can be uncmfrtable, may slip during sleep, and cannt track
muth breathing. The team is imprving it and explring its real-wrld uses. S the next time yu unlck yur
phne r pen a dr, it might nt be yur face r fingerprint that identifies yu. Instead, a simple breath culd d
the jb.
12. What is special abut a persn’s breathing “fingerprint”?
A. It helps take in mre air. B. It is unique t each individual.
C. It reflects ne’s lifestyle. D. It remains unchanged thrughut life.
13. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t paragraph 2?
A. Srka’s predictin matched the result.
B. A wearable device tracked daytime nasal airflw.
C. The study initially explred breathing-brain links.
D. Breathing patterns can reliably identify individuals.
14. What can we infer abut the relatinship between breathing and md?
A. Changes in breath culd cure anxiety. B. Their exact relatinship remains unclear.
C. Anxiety always causes abnrmal breathing. D. Breathing is respnsible fr negative md.
15. What is the main idea f this passage?
A. Breathing may replace face recgnitin.
B. A grundbreaking device tracks human breathing.
C. Breathing patterns are linked t identity and health.
D. Breathing “fingerprints” reveal ur mental cnditin.
