Whether yu’re preparing fr an exam r trying t learn a new musical instrument r even trying t perfect a new sprt, sleep may secretly help imprve yur memry.
Studies have actually tld us that sleep is imprtant fr memry in at least three different ways. We knw that yu need sleep befre learning t actually get yur brain ready, almst like a dry spnge (海绵), ready t take in new infrmatin. And withut sleep, the brain becmes “waterlgged” and can’t take in new infrmatin r create new memries prperly. It’s nt just imprtant that yu sleep befre learning, yu als need t sleep after learning t hit the save buttn n thse new memries s that yu dn’t frget.
In fact, sleep helps prtect and strengthen memries, cementing them int the brain’s neural netwrks (神经网络). Scientists are starting t understand hw sleep helps with this prcess.
The first mechanism (机制) is a file-transfer (文件传输) prcess. And here, we can speak abut tw different structures within the brain. The first is called the hippcampus and it sits n the left and the right side f yur brain. And yu can think f the hippcampus almst like the infrmatinal inbx f yur brain. It’s very gd at receiving new memry files and hlding nt them. The secnd structure that we can speak abut is called the frntal crtex. It sits n tp f yur brain. And during deep sleep, there is this file-transfer mechanism. Think f the hippcampus like a USB stick and yur crtex like the hard drive. And during the day, we’re ging arund and we’re cllecting lts f files, but then during deep sleep at night, because f that limited strage ability, we have t transfer thse files frm the hippcampus ver t the hard drive f the brain, the crtex. And that’s exactly ne f the mechanisms that deep sleep seems t prvide.
Scientists have discvered anther mechanism that helps stre thse memries int the brain, called replay. In an experiment, they studied hw rats learned t run arund a maze (迷宫) by recrding brain activity. As the rats ran thrugh the maze, their brain cells reacted t different parts f the maze, creating a “memry signature” (记忆特征). Interestingly, when the rats fell asleep, their brains replayed this memry signature. Hwever, during sleep, the replay happened almst 10 times faster than when the rats were awake. This prcess is thught t help strengthen and stre the memry. This seems t be the secnd way in which sleep can actually strengthen memries.
The final way in which sleep is beneficial fr memry is cnnectin and rganizatin. In fact, we’re nw learning that sleep is much mre pwerful than we ever imagined. Sleep desn’t just simply strengthen individual memries, sleep will actually cleverly intercnnect new memries tgether. As a result, yu wake up with a refreshed netwrk f cnnectins in yur mind, allwing yu t slve prblems that seemed impssible befre.
And this is prbably the reasn that yu’ve never been tld t stay awake n a prblem. Instead, yu’re tld t sleep n a prblem, and that’s exactly what the science teaches us.
30.Hw can we make the mst f sleep t imprve learning?
A.By emptying the brain right after learning.
B.By sleeping fr at least eight hurs every day.
C.By taking in mre infrmatin befre sleeping.
D.By getting enugh sleep befre and after learning.
31.What des the wrd “cementing” in Paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
A.Breaking.B.String.C.Changing.D.Shaping.

A.The file-transfer mechanism wrks during the day.
B.The hippcampus intercnnects memries tgether.
C.The crtex is where memries g during deep sleep.
D.The brain replays everything we ntice when awake.
33.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.The imprtance f enugh sleep.
