11-year-ld Canadian Kiké Dueck has always lved nature. Frm studying bird bks as a yung child t identifying mushrms and native plants, her cnnectin t the earth runs deep.
But at nine, reading abut climate change caused the first feelings f anxiety. “Painfully, I culdn’t understand why peple acted like everything was nrmal when the planet was in truble,” Kiké said. Like many yung peple, she felt flded by fears f drughts, wildfires, and a changing wrld — emtins knwn as climate anxiety. A Canadian study fund ver half f kids feel afraid r pwerless abut the envirnment, with 37% saying these feelings affect their daily lives.
Fr Kiké, there are days when she lses her mtivatin t care abut day-t-day basics like getting dressed and ging t schl r being enthusiastic abut the sprts she’s invlved in. “I feel bad because I’m nt feeling like I’m ding enugh r smething like that. But then I eventually feel better and then I feel like I’m nt ding enugh again and I’ll just cycle n and n,” she says.
Thankfully, Kiké’s parents, Dennie Frnwald and Kris Dueck, turned this wrry int a chance fr grwth. They sught ways t help Kiké channel her passin int psitive actin. “We wanted her t feel empwered, nt helpless,” Frnwald said. They cnnected with EnvirCllective, a lcal climate advcacy grup. Thrugh the rganizatin, Kiké jined meaningful prjects, such as partnering with grups like Better Bus Yuth t advcate fr greener transprtatin. Kiké has als becme invlved with the Cathedral Frest Prject, planting an urban frest in a park nt far frm the family’s huse.
While bth parents said they’d always cared abut the envirnment, Kris said that Kiké, nly 11, had pushed them t be mre accuntable. They are mindful f driving less and biking t wrk. Their recycling system is highly rganized, redirecting nearly all f their waste fr recycling and cmpsting (堆肥).
24. Which is ne surce fKiké’s wrry?

Yu may have heard that kale (羽衣甘蓝) is the “queen f greens”, laded with imprtant nutrients like calcium, irn, and vitamins A, C, and K. It is als a rich surce f cartenids — plant-based cmpunds that act as antixidants ( 抗氧化剂) t supprt eye and skin health. Hwever, getting the benefits f this super fd is nt as simple as eating it plain. Accrding t a study published in Fd Nutritin, the way yu prepare this leafy green determines hw well its nutrients are absrbed.
The study investigated the impact f varius cking strategies by using a simulated mdel f the human digestive system. Researchers cmpared the absrptin f nutrients when kale was eaten alne versus when it was dressed with a simple mixture f live il and water. The results were clear: nutrients are much better absrbed when kale is paired with fat, whether the vegetable is raw r cked.
“Kale cntains many fat-dependent nutrients,” explains study cauthr Rujie Vanessa Zhang. “They d nt disslve well in the watery stmach envirnment when kale is eaten alne.” When live il is added, it frms tiny particles called “mixed micelles” during digestin. These particles act like tiny vehicles, carrying cartenids acrss the gut wall (肠壁). Withut these fat drplets, the nutrients remain trapped, leading t limited absrptin.
T unlck these “trapped” nutrients, preparatin is key. David Julian McClements, a prfessr f fd science, suggests “massaging” kale with live il. This prcess helps break dwn cell walls, leading t what experts call a “jail break” fr nutrients. While live il is a ppular chice, ther healthy fats like avcad, nuts, r canla il can als d the trick.
Ultimately, the best way t eat kale is the way yu enjy it mst. Whether yu stir-fry it, r blend it int a sup, remember the glden rule: kale needs a little fat t shine.
28. Which aspect f the study des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
A. Its bjective. B. Its influence.
C. Its backgrund. D. Its prcedure.
29. Why shuld we eat kale with il accrding t Rujie Vanessa Zhang?
A. T imprve its taste. B. T get mre nutrients.
C. T trap the water inside. D. T prtect the stmach.
30. Which f the fllwing best describes the prcess f “jail break” in paragraph 4?
A. Essential. B. Evil.
C. Optinal. D. Cntrversial.
31. What’s the authr’s main purpse in writing the text?
A. T advcate fr a balanced diet t preserve natural health.
B. T ffer scientific guidance n maximizing kale’s benefits.
C. T reveal the crucial rle f fat in kale’s nutrient frmatin.
D. T clarify a cmmn miscnceptin abut kale’s nutritin.
In Guangdng prvince, hundreds f ffshre wind turbines ( 风力涡轮机) have been installed in the Suth China Sea t generate renewable energy. Hwever, these turbines face a majr threat: typhns, which frequently strike China’s cast.
Accrding t Zhu Rnghua, directr f the Yangjiang Offshre Wind Energy Labratry, castal regins that experience typhns als pssess the best ffshre wind resurces. The challenge is t build turbines that can nt nly resist typhns but als tap int their energy.
During a typhn, turbines are under extreme pressure. Blades may break because the speed and directin f the wind ften change suddenly and dramatically. Its twer can bend r cllapse, and its fundatin — which als has t take the pressure frm waves and currents — is at risk f becming defrmed r verturning. Rain and lightning strikes can damage turbines, t.
While bth n-land and ffshre turbines in typhn areas need t be typhn-resistant, this feature is mre critical ffshre because typhns are much strnger at sea. Chinese cmpanies have adpted multiple strategies t enhance turbine resilience, including advanced materials, imprved weather frecasting, and upgraded cntrl systems, accrding t Han Yujia frm Glbal Energy Mnitr.
A ntable example is OceanX, manufactured by Mingyang Smart Energy Grup. Its flating fundatin hlds tw turbines with ppsitely spinning blades t bst energy utput. The platfrm is fixed t the seabed at a single pint, s it can side with the wind t lwer lad, and its fundatin is made f ultra-high perfrmance cncrete which is fur times strnger than rdinary cncrete.
In September 2024, OceanX was installed ff Yangjiang’s cast, weeks befre Super Typhn Yagi arrived. Despite wind speeds reaching 133 km/h, the turbines survived and generated 2. 1 GWh f electricity in nine hurs. Gldwind, anther Chinese manufacturer, has achieved similar success thrugh innvatins like carbn fiber materials and real-time mnitring systems.
In the next decade, China is expected t add 170 GW f new ffshre wind capacity, abut 60% in typhn regins. With the expansin f ffshre wind energy, engineering challenges als increase.
32. What is the main idea f paragraph 3?

B. The ability t frecast typhns accurately.
C. The ability t hld up against damage.
D. The ability t perate withut human invlvement.
34. What d we learn abut OceanX frm paragraphs 5 and 6?
A. Its fundatin uses high-strength materials t flat n water.
B. It went thrugh Super Typhn Yagi and kept generating pwer.
C. Its single-pint fixing design enables the blades t spin ppsitely.
D. It uses real-time mnitring systems prduced by Gldwind.
35. Which f the fllwing best describes the verall structure f the passage?
A. Past→present→future. B. Prblems→causes→effects.
C. Definitin→classificatin→summary. D. Challenges→slutins→prspects.
