Still, facing his sharp eyes and endless criticism day after day, I felt s defeated that I seriusly cnsidered quitting. I was cnvinced that he just didn’t like me.
Then, a huge stry brke. A histric building dwntwn, ne that had std fr ver a century as a symbl f ur twn, suddenly caught fire, and ur newspaper needed an urgent headline reprt. Yet, right at that imprtant mment, Mr. Hendersn unexpectedly fell ill. Befre ging t the hspital, he walked slwly t my desk, his face pale. Withut saying a wrd, he placed his ld, thick ntebk n my desk, which he always carried with him. He tapped n it, and left me in ttal charge f the big reprt.
Racing against time, I rushed t the smke-filled scene, interviewed shcked witnesses, and gathered facts. The big fire had destryed the rf, leaving nly the black brick walls standing. When I hurried back, nly three hurs remained befre the final deadline.
Sitting befre the cmputer with my shaking hands, I typed anxiusly. I rewrte the pening three times, deleting sentences back and frth. Each versin felt lifeless. I just culdn’t find the cre fact r the emtin Mr. Hendersn always demanded.
The wall clck cunted dwn t my failure. Depressed, I pulled at my hair. My heart sank as the letters seemed t laugh at my helplessness.
