As a caregiver, I have experienced symptms myself, ignring my wn needs, bursting int lud sbs when talking t the dctr, nt wanting t meet peple. Fear f what I will d with my life cnsumes me when I am n lnger caring fr my mther.
Fr all its csts and trubles, caring fr my mther has been a surce f fulfillment. I spend nearly every hur f the day r night at her side. Ever since she came hme frm the hspital, she has called me Annayya, dear lder brther. Fr sme time, I wuld try t remind her I was nt her brther, but she persisted. Once I asked her why, and she replied that it made her heart filled with cntentment t utter that wrd. When she des, I lve t hear it. I knw she is calling me her prtectr.

Litter nt nly makes ur streets untidy, but als pses a risk t wildlife. Hwever, a study reprts that blue tits (山雀) are lining their nests with cigarette butts, which may prtect them frm parasitic (寄生虫的) infectins.
In the wild, blue tits pick sweet-smelling plants and bring them back t their nests t drive away parasites. In cities, they cllect discarded cigarette butts. Scientists wndered whether it was just an adaptatin t the urban jungle r whether these butts acted as a chemical prtectin similar t plants.
T find ut why, they studied 33 blue tit families in city parks and frests, dividing nests int three grups. The first was the cntrl grup, where nests were left natural, but researchers added tw unsmked cigarette filters (滤嘴). In the secnd grup, researchers added tw smked cigarette filters t the nest t cpy what urban birds d. Fr the third grup, the scientists replaced the natural nest with a lab-cleaned nest made f mss and cttn.
After 13 days, baby birds in each f these nests were given health checks. Their wing lengths and bld samples were examined fr signs f illness r bld lss. The baby birds in bth the cigarette butt nests and the artificial germ-free nests had imprved physilgical cnditin and reduced parasite-related bld lss.
When cunting the bugs, there were mre parasites in the natural cntrl nests and hardly any in the artificial nests. In nests with cigarette butts, the number f blwfly larvae, a cmmn parasite, appeared lwer, suggesting that nictine in the butts culd be acting as an insecticide, driving away the pests.
“Our study indicates that cigarette butts may be used by urban blue tits as an pprtunistic adaptive strategy, cpying the functin f sweet-smelling plant materials in parasite cntrl and ptentially cntributing psitively t baby bird welfare,” researchers cmmented in their paper. While this is ptentially gd news, the team highlights a cncern. Butts als cntain txic chemicals, and it’s unknwn at this stage whether they culd affect bird health later in life.
8.Why des the authr mentin blue tits’ using sweet-smelling plants?
      A. T shw city life harms blue tits.
      B. T explain their nest-building in frests.
      C. T prve plants are better than cigarette butts.
      D. T explain why they cllect cigarette butts in cities.
9.Why were the nests f the three grups treated differently?
      A. T study blue tits’ preference fr nest materials.
      B. T cmpare the effects n baby birds’ health.
      C. T set a cntrl grup fr bird disease research.
      D. T see if blue tits prefer smked r unsmked filters.
10.What can be inferred abut blue tits’ use f cigarette butts?
      A. It reflects their adaptatin t urban life.

      D. Cigarette Butts in Nests: Help r Harm?

Every test taker will knw that answering an essay questin in 20 minutes takes serius brain pwer. Having access t AI wuld certainly lighten the mental lad. But as a recent study by researchers at Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy suggests, that help may cme at a cst.
During a series f essay-writing sessins, the brain activity f students wrking with (as well as withut) ChatGPT was measured. Generally, the AI users exhibited markedly lwer neural activity in parts f the brain assciated with creative functins and attentin. AI-assisted students als fund it much harder t prvide an accurate qute frm the paper that they had just prduced.
The finding indicates the ptentially detrimental effects f AI use fr creativity and learning. This research pints t questins abut whether the shrt-term gains affrded by AI may cause a lng-term debt.
Whether AI will leave peple’s brains weak in the lng term remains an pen questin. Researchers stress that further wrk is needed t establish a cause and effect link between AI use and weakened brains. The wrry is that, as Dr Gerlich puts it, the preference t seek the least effrtful way t slve a prblem, knwn as “cgnitive miserliness”, culd create what he describes as a negative cycle. As AI-reliant individuals find it harder t think critically, their brains may becme mre miserly, which will lead t shifting the mental wrk t AI. One participant in Dr Gerlich’s study, a heavy user f AI, sighed, “I rely s much n AI that I dn’t think I’d knw hw t slve certain prblems withut it.”
There are ways t keep the brain fit. Dr. Gerlich recmmends that, rather than asking a chatbt t generate the final desired utput, ne shuld prmpt it at each step n the path t the slutin. Instead f asking it “Where shuld I g fr a sunny hliday?”, fr instance, ne culd start by asking where it rains the least, and prceed frm there.
12.What is the functin f the first paragraph?
      A. T intrduce a study n AI.
      B. T define the rle f AI in essays.
      C. T highlight the dilemma f AI usage.
      D. T analyze the mental lad f testing.
13.What did the study find abut the AI-assisted students?
      A. Their cncentratin was lst.
      B. Their essay-writing ability drpped.
      C. They shw less brain engagement.
      D. They shw lng-term memry damage.
14.What des the underlined phrase “cgnitive miserliness” refer t?
      A. A habit f ver-relying n data.
      B. A lack f critical thinking ability.
      C. A tendency t minimize mental effrt.
      D. A refusal t engage in cmplex tasks.
15.What des Dr. Gerlich suggest ding?
      A. Emplying AI fr final utputs.
      B. Aviding AI use fr hliday plans.
      C. Writing essays withut AI supprt.
      D. Balancing AI with human guidance.
      二、阅读七选五:本大题共5小题,共12.5分。
I nce thught prcrastinatin (拖延) was an unbreakable bad habit rted in lack f willpwer. (16) . When ur lives are busy — whether persnally r prfessinally — stress can verwhelm ur brains, making it hard t fcus and be prductive when we sit dwn t wrk. The key t breaking the habit f prcrastinatin is t understand the fllwing three parts f any habit. We can address each part step by step t vercme this habit effectively.
      Identify the Trigger
Every habit starts with a trigger. Fr prcrastinatin, the trigger is usually stress. Take a mment t recgnize the stressrs in yur life. (17) . Once yu have identified the trigger, yu can wrk n managing yur stress levels. Fr example, if yur hmewrk stresses yu ut, try breaking it int smaller and easier parts.
      (18)
Prcrastinatin is a pattern that we repeat, and it can be challenging t break. Hwever, using the science f habits, we can shift ur patterns. The 5-4-3-2-1 technique is a simple yet effective way t interrupt the habit f aviding wrk. When yu feel yurself hesitating, cunt dwn frm five t ne, and then start wrking fr just five minutes. This small actin wakes up the part f yur brain respnsible fr fcus and helps yu get started.
Fcus n the Reward f Relief
Prcrastinatin prvides temprary relief frm stress, but it ultimately leads t mre stress and anxiety. (19) . Yu tend t feel mre in cntrl f yur life and less verwhelmed. Try linking small rewards t prgress, like a shrt break after 30 minutes f studying. Over time, yur brain will learn that starting feels better than aviding.
Remember, yu are nt a prcrastinatr; yu have a habit f prcrastinating. (20) . With the right tls and techniques, yu can break this habit and achieve yur gals.
      A.Change the pattern
      B.Fllw the cuntdwn technique
C.It’s imprtant t find ways t manage stress in yur daily life
D.Interrupt the respnse t prcrastinatin and cntrl yur actins
