wastewater treatment plants are still nt effectively remving micrplastics.
Rughly 9 billin metric tns f plastic have been prduced glbally since plastic prductin began, much f which has gradually becme ever-smaller pieces withut truly breaking dwn. These small pieces are nw widespread in the sil and water arund the wrld. Wastewater treatment plants actually d remve a lt f micrplastics, the new study shws, but nt enugh. “What ur systematic study fund is that while mst wastewater treatment plants greatly reduce micrplastic lads, cmplete remval remains impssible with current technlgies,” says senir authr Un-Jung Kim, an envirnmental engineer at the University f Texas at Arlingtn (UTA). “As a result, many micrplastics are released back int the envirnment and these micrplastics and ther pllutants wuld exist in very small quantities, but we can be influenced thrugh simple actins like drinking water, ding laundry, r watering plants, leading t ptential lng-term serius human health impacts.”
