Wait — what? Angela Rayner wants cuncils t sell ff alltments (私家菜地) t pay the bills? That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard.
I care because when I was tiny, my dad used t walk me past the alltments at the end f ur lane. I asked him why s many little gardens were jammed tgether. He explained that the cuncil wned the land, but let rdinary flk — especially thse withut a garden f their wn — rent a patch fr almst nthing. They culd grw ptates, sunflwers, whatever they fancied. When smene gt tired r mved n, the next persn gt a g. Even at five years ld, I remember thinking: that’s prper sharing. Just like they taught us in nursery.
I still think that. Alltments are like utdr libraries. Libraries lend yu bks. Alltments lend yu a bit f earth. Bth knit neighburhds tgether. Bth make life bearable.
And here’s the killer: sell them ff, and they’re gne. Permanently. We’re already lsing parks, clsing libraries, and shutting yuth clubs. Nw alltments? If we lse these small pieces f land, we lse places where strangers becme neighburs. We lse the chance fr kids t see carrts actually grw. We lse the quiet magic f watching a seed turn int smething.
Yes, cuncils are brke. I get it. But selling cmmunity land is a shrt-term plaster (创可贴) n a lng-term wund. Future generatins wn’t even knw what they missed.
If I were running things, I’d try pretty much anything else. Because alltments aren’t just dirt. They’re tiny pieces f hpe — and we need thse mre than ever.
4. Why des the authr mentin her experience in childhd?
A.T shw hw much she lved her father. B.T explain why she values alltments.
C.T prve that children can understand plitics. D.T describe a typical day in her hmetwn.
5. What’s the similarity between alltments and libraries?
A.Bth strengthen the cmmunity bnds. B.Bth need substantial public funding.
C.Bth are intended fr children. D.Bth are free f charge.
6. What wuld happen if alltments were sld accrding t the authr?
A.The cuncil wuld slve its budget prblems frever.
B.Peple wuld build new parks and libraries instead.
C.Children wuld be unwilling t learn hw plants grw.
D.Imprtant cmmunity spaces wuld be lst regrettably.

Famus rganizatins like Ggle and Mun Space, a Silicn Valley-based space services startup, serve as key partners f the prject.
Existing satellite systems rely n lw-reslutin images. They nly scan a specific area nce every 12 hurs and can merely spt extremely large wildfires cvering several acres. Hwever, FireSat is far mre pwerful. It is able t discver wildfires as small as 25 square meters, rughly the size f a classrm, and send high-reslutin visual updates every 20 minutes.
The FireSat prject has been under develpment fr less than ne and a half years. Each satellite is equipped with specially designed cameras. They prvide images fr machine learning algrithms (算法), which can accurately identify wildfires by differentiating them frm ther interfering bjects. The AI algrithms cmpare real-time images with 1,000 histrical nes fr judgment. Mrever, the system can predict fire spread, allwing firefighters t make smarter decisins t cntrl fires safely and efficiently.
The new system will effectively reduce huge damage t frests and cities, as well as residents’ displacement caused by wildfires. It is reprted that January’s Ls Angeles wildfires caused lsses f ver $250 billin. We ften say, “It’s n the tip f my tngue,” when we are sure we knw a wrd but cannt recall it at that mment. This is nt merely a clever idim; it reflects a real neurlgical phenmenn called “lethlgica”. The term cmes frm the Greek wrds “lethe”, meaning “frgetfulness”, and “lgs”, meaning “wrd”, thugh researchers usually refer t it as a tip-f-the-tngue state, r TOT state. TOT states ccur wrldwide. A survey in 1999 fund that ver three-quarters f languages use a tngue metaphr similar t English t describe this experience. But why des it happen?
Prducing language is a cmplex prcess in which the brain transfrms abstract ideas int wrds. Nrmally this wrks smthly, explains Karin Humphreys frm Canada’s McMaster University. “In a TOT state, hwever, the system breaks dwn and yu becme stuck partway thrugh,” she said in 2015.
Interestingly, TOT states can repeat fr the same wrd. A 2008 study shwed that the lnger smene struggles t recall a wrd befre being reminded, the mre likely they are t experience anther TOT state when trying t remember it later. On the cntrary, recalling the wrd n ne’s wn reduces the chance f repetitin, as fund in a 2015 study. Peple are able t regain the intended wrd mre than 90% f the time.
TOT states are mre likely when individuals are tired and when they attempt t remember prper names. Age als plays a rle: a 1999 diary study fund that TOT states ccur abut nce r twice a week fr yung adults aged 18 t 24, but they are twice as frequent fr thse aged 80 t 92. This phenmenn fascinates researchers because it shws hw memry, language, and cgnitin can mmentarily becme discnnected, leaving us knwing that a wrd exists even when it temprarily slips frm reach.
12. What can we learn frm the 1999 survey?
A.TOT states are similar in English-speaking cuntries.
B.Mst languages have similar expressins fr the TOT state.
C.Peple frm Greece suffer mre frm TOT states.
D.Over three-quarters f peple experience TOT wrldwide.
13. Why d peple fall int a TOT state accrding t Karin Humphreys?
A.They have t many abstract ideas in their mind.
B.They haven’t practiced the new wrds enugh.
C.Their brain fails t finish the language prducing prcess.
D.Their memry is permanently damaged by tiredness.
14. Hw can peple avid frgetting the same wrd again?
A.Try t recall the wrd by themselves.
B.Wait patiently until smene reminds them f it.
C.Increase the chance t repeat it. D.Turn t researchers fr prfessinal help.
15. Which is the best title fr the text?
A.The Origins f the Well-knwn Idims
B.Different Symptms f TOT at Different Levels
C.Why Yur Brain Smetimes Freezes Mid-Sentence
