When Mia Wds retired at 61, she knew she needed a plan. “I was wrried abut lsing my identity as a prfessinal. What else can I be?” she thught.
The year befre, she had been tld she had a mild memry prblem. “I was trying t shw myself that I culd still think and be creative,” she says. S she decided t d — rather than be — smething new: bake a pie every day fr a year and give each pie away. “It made me reach ut every day t smebdy, s I wuldn’t be alne. And it gave me a rutine,” she says.
She baked her first pie and gave it t her 88-year-ld aunt, Carl. As a teenager, Mia had mved in with her aunt’s family when her mther became ill. “They gave me stability... It was the perfect first pie,” she says. She went n giving pies t frmer clleagues, grcery clerks, even a hmeless man. As wrd spread, she gt knwn as “the pie lady”.
Fr mre than 30 years, Mia had wrked as a city planner. “I’m a planner by nature, training and prfessin. What I really liked abut it was that planning takes time, chas, many different cmpnents, puts them all tgether and makes them int smething manageable.” She sees the same in baking pies: “Yu take a bunch f ingredients and create smething ut f them.”
Twelve years n, Mia has cntinued t invent new prjects, including writing a letter a day, and painting pictures f her lcal sky. She is writing a bk abut the pie experience. But she has learned mre than baking. “What really came ut f it was the understanding that I was smene wh culd d new things,” she reflects. “And my prfessinal identity wasn’t critical t wh I am.”
“Even nw, after I have an encunter with smebdy, I think: ‘There’s a persn I wish I culd give a pie t.’” says Mia.

Artificial intelligence is cntributing t significant advances in many academic and technical fields. Althugh the applicatin f AI tls can benefit science and sciety, it als creates risks.
AI slp — lw-quality, inaccurate cntent frm Generative AI like ChatGPT — flds scientific literature with false data and misleading reasning. AI review tls favur such slp. After ChatGPT’s 2022 release, scientists lacking versight submit errr-ridden papers. AI slp als appears in paper mills (工厂) — cmpanies mass-prducing papers; in 2022 alne, 416 mill-prduced articles were withdrawn. Thugh fake (伪造的) research existed befre Generative AI, this new technlgy has facilitated its expansin, driving a transitin frm individual bad actrs t illegal businesses.
Unfrtunately, prfessinal jurnals cntinue t publish AI slp. This prblem arises partially frm nvel challenges specific t Generative AI, such as the difficulties invlved in detecting AI slp; the cmplexities in enfrcing plicies that require disclsure (公开) f AI assistance; and the increase in submissins arising frm AI assistance. The AI slp trend als results frm lng-standing failures in the review system. Even befre Generative AI, verstretched vlunteer reviewers and editrs lacked the time and resurces t ensure high standards, allwing many lw-quality papers t pass. AI-generated and AI-assisted papers are pushing an already verstressed system t the breaking pint.
Even the very citatins that prvide cntinuity and prir evidence in scientific papers are being undermined by Generative AI. Librarians have reprted increasing requests fr access t AI-generated citatins that d nt exist. Many such citatins have already entered the academic literature, cntributing t the reductin f trust in science. When researchers cite such slp, they pllute the academic wrld with unreliable r biased analyses, damaging cnfidence in the entire scientific ecsystem.
What can we d t cntain the AI slp in scientific research? Researchers wh use AI t cnduct literature searches shuld carefully check references fr reliability. AI develpers and cmpanies bear sme respnsibility fr ensuring that these tls are trained n high-quality research papers and data. Fr example, scientific institutins can pressure develpers t fine-tune their AI mdels using the mst reliable surces and t penly share the results f their safety and accuracy tests with users. This is just the beginning f a lng jurney.
8.Hw des the new technlgy lead t the expansin f fake research?
A.It transfrms illegal businesses.B.It saves struggling paper mills.
C.It eliminates misleading reasning.D.It bsts the prductin f false papers.
9.What can we learn abut the academic review system?
A.It is verburdened.B.It is underestimated.
C.It is rich in resurces.D.It is efficient in checks.
10.What des the underlined wrd “undermined” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Inspected.B.Ignred.C.Weakened.D.Mixed.
11.What des the authr imply in the last paragraph?
A.AI slp shuld be tackled cllectively.B.AI cmpanies shuld be fined severely.
C.AI tls can be trained n varius data.D.AI develpers are the rt cause f AI slp.
Chinese scientists have develped a new refrigeratin methd that slves a lng-standing challenge in cling technlgy. Published in Nature, the study respnds t rising energy demands in applicatins ranging frm fd preservatin t data center cling.
Traditinal vapr-cmpressin systems cnsume vast amunts f electricity and rely n harmful refrigerants. In China, refrigeratin accunts fr nearly 20% f the natin’s electricity use and 7.8% f its carbn emissins (碳排放). While slid-state cling avids harmful gases, it suffers frm pr heat transfer, limiting its real-wrld applicatin.
Led by Prfessr Li Bing frm the Chinese Academy f Sciences, the research team vercame this by cmbining slid cling effects with liquid flw. They used a cmmn, nn-txic salt whse disslutin (溶解) in water absrbs large amunts f heat. Cnversely, applying pressure causes the salt t cme ut and release heat. Cycling this pressure achieves cntinuus cling.
“Unlike traditinal slid methds, where heat mves slwly, ur system integrates the refrigerant and heat-transfer medium int a single liquid,” Li said. “This slves the ‘impssible triangle’ — achieving lw pllutin, strng cling, and fast heat transfer all at nce.”
Lab tests shwed a temperature drp f nearly 30°C in just 20 secnds at rm temperature, and up t 54°C at higher temperatures — significantly utperfrming existing slid clers. A prttype cycle achieved a cling capacity f 67 jules per gram with nearly 77% efficiency. The system als prved stable, reversible, and instantly respnsive t pressure changes.
“This technlgy mves beynd traditinal refrigeratin principles,” Li added. “By turning the clant int a fluid, it pens the dr t high-perfrmance, zer-emissin cling fr hmes and industry.”
He nted the methd’s strng high-temperature perfrmance makes it an ideal candidate fr heat management in next-generatin AI cmputing facilities. While engineering challenges remain, especially in achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles, the principle culd be adapted t ther materials fr diverse cling needs.
12.What is the main prblem with traditinal slid-state cling systems?
A.They transfer heat prly.B.They prduce harmful gases.
C.They fail at high temperature.D.They use t much electricity.
13.What is the key innvatin f the new cling methd?
A.Using salt instead f chemical refrigerants.
B.Increasing pressure inside traditinal systems.
C.Replacing pressure cycles with cntinuus flw.
D.Cmbining slid cling with liquid heat transfer.
14.Why des the authr mentin the “impssible triangle” in the text?
A.T highlight the value f the new system.
B.T illustrate the design f the new system.
C.T explain why ld systems are still in use.
D.T shw the limitatins f previus systems.
15.What des Li Bing see as a prmising applicatin f the new technlgy?
A.Preserving fd in supply chains.B.Replacing traditinal hme refrigeratrs.
C.Cling future AI data centers.D.Achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles.
There may be times when yu may feel that envelping yur message in a generus cat f “nice” will make cmmunicatin with thers better. 16 Sugarcating yur wrds — whatever yur reasns are — nt nly des nt push meaningful relatinships frward but may actually endanger therwise healthy interactins. While, at best, sugarcating can be an attempt at kindness, at wrst, it culd be viewed as a frm f manipulatin — trying t cmmunicate in a way that cntrls the ther persn’s experience, instead f allwing them t have their wn real reactin.
17 “Fr many, this pattern began in childhd,” says psychlgist Carlyn Hextall. “Lve may have felt cnditinal, and an uncnscius decisin was made that being pleasing, agreeable, r undemanding was the safest rute t acceptance and cnnectin.” 18 Yu might ntice that yu wuld rather validate thers, stay quiet r sften yur truth because yu fear the cnsequence f vicing yur wn thughts.
Oppsed t sugarcating, saltcating ges in the ppsite directin. 19 But ften, it crsses the line frm being hnest t being rude. Peple wh use saltcating ften ignre thers’ feelings, speaking their minds withut any cnsideratin, which easily leads t misunderstandings and cnflicts.
T avid these, Carlyn suggests stpping using glbal, abslute statements such as “yu always” r “yu never”. 20 Instead, be specific in yur feedback, and use “I” statements, which clearly cmmunicate yur experience withut assigning any blame. Fr example, yu might say: “When yu said yu’d meet me and then canceled, I felt upset and hurt.” This centers yur emtinal experience, and helps the ther persn understand the impact f their behavir.
A.Yet in fact, the ppsite is preferred.
B.Often, sugarcating is deeply rted in peple.
C.It can be presented as being straight and direct.
D.These tend t cause defensiveness very quickly.
E.But a nice wrapper des nt necessarily make a gift better.
F.In adulthd, this early adaptatin can cntinue t play ut.
G.These tw appraches are tw extremes that are better ff avided.

Eddie valued his family’s accrdin (手风琴) — a treasure passed dwn frm his grandfather t his father, representing his Mexican-American family’s Tejan music traditin. Raised in San Antni neighbrhd filled with Tejan rhythms, Eddie learned the instrument frm his father and frmed the band Las Estrellas (“The Stars”) with childhd friends: Luis n drums and Ruben n guitar.
Each day, Eddie hurried t Luis’s huse fr practice, struggling with the heavy accrdin case while wrrying abut Ruben. Thugh a gifted guitarist wh picked up sngs quickly and lved playing with the band, Ruben hated practicing alne. He was always late, and his lack f sl (单独的) practice led t cnstant mistakes — a grwing prblem fr the tri (三重奏).
Their lives changed when Luis handed Eddie an envelpe frm the Tejan Festival: an invitatin t perfrm in just tw mnths. The bys celebrated wildly, but Eddie’s jy was mixed with anxiety, hping the pprtunity wuld mtivate Ruben t practice. That night, Eddie shared the news with his family. His father, a frmer festival winner, presented a trphy (奖杯) with “First Place” written n it and encuraged him, “Yu belng there and will shine.” Eddie admitted his wrry abut Ruben, wh was t talented and dear a friend t replace. His father advised, “Find ut why he wn’t practice alne and help him.”
At their next practice, Ruben messed up the festival sng at the very beginning. He claimed sre fingers frm building a hut (简陋的小屋), but Luis accused him f skipping practice. Ruben gt annyed, and Eddie was angry. Fllwing his father’s advice, Eddie asked Ruben why he didn’t play at hme as he shuld. Ruben admitted, “My guitar sunds lnely alne, and I can’t fcus.”
Upn learning where Ruben’s prblem lay, Eddie decided t take immediate actin t make practice fun fr Ruben. On the way t Luis’s, Eddie came up with a plan: practice tgether at Ruben’s huse daily. Luis agreed and they rdered Ruben’s favrite pizza fr a surprise.

51.Dear Mark,
Thanks fr sharing the disqualified pht case with me. In my view, disqualifying the AI-generated pht is bth reasnable and necessary.
Phtgraphy, as an art frm, embdies the phtgrapher’s painstaking effrts in cmpsitin, lighting adjustment, and n-site shting, capturing the essence f a real-wrld mment. AI-generated images, despite their visual appeal, lack the human tuch, the emtinal resnance, and the genuine creative prcess that traditinal phtgraphy ffers.
Allwing such wrks in a cmpetitin wuld undermine the hard wrk f sincere participants and distrt the very nature f the cntest. Thus, this decisin uphlds the fairness and integrity f the phtgraphy cmpetitin.
Best wishes,
