I teach bilgy at the University f Washingtn, and I’ve lst cunt f hw many times students cme t me with textbks highlighted in fur different clrs. “I can tell yu’ve dne a lt f wrk,” I say. “Yu really want t succeed.” Then I have t tell them the hard truth: any mre time
spent n this after the first time was a waste. They’re shcked. “Hw is that pssible?” Students have been trained fr years t keep reading and rereading, t mark every page until it glws (变得鲜亮). But research n the testing effect shws that peple learn mre by testing
themselves than by rereading. The idea is simple: read a little, then test yurself. The prblem is
that many students dn’t knw hw t study this way.
S I mdel it in class. Every five minutes I thrw ut a questin n the material we have just talked abut, and I can see them start t lk thrugh their ntes. I say, “Stp. D nt lk at yur ntes. Take a minute t think abut it yurself.” I tell them ur brains are like a frest, and yur memry is in there smewhere. Yu’re here, and the memry is ver there. The mre times yu make a path t that memry, the better the path is, s that the next time yu need the memry, it’s ging t be easier t find it. But as sn as yu get yur ntes ut, yu have shrt-circuited the path. Yu are nt explring fr the path anymre, smene has tld yu the way.
At ther times, I pse a questin and have students write three pssible answers n the bard. They vte by raising fingers, then find smene with a different answer and figure ut wh is crrect. This transfrms hw they see their wn learning. When students trip ver an exam questin, they’ll cmmnly accuse the test f cntaining trick questins. But nw they cme t me after a disappinting exam and say, “I have the illusin (错觉) f knwing. Hw d I get better?”
Why are the students shcked by the authr’s cmment n their textbks?
They cnsider the teacher t critical.
They find their study methd questined.
They regard reading as effective learning.
They view highlighting as a waste f time.
What prblem d many students face?
      They depend n frequent tests.
      They lack self-testing skills.
They spend little time in reading.
      They bject t page marking.
What des the authr mean by cmparing the brain t a frest?
      Memry disappears withut regular use.
      Memries exist in fixed lcatins.
      Memry training means making paths.
      Nte cnsultatin helps recall.
What d students’ wrds imply in paragraph 4?
They are disappinted at the exam result.
They regret nt testing themselves earlier.
      They prefer slving prblems independently.
They are ready t imprve their learning methds.

Peple in the US thrw away at least 17 millin tns f textiles (纺织品) every year—abut 100 punds f clthing per persn. At the same time, unsld bluses, jackets, and ther fashin-industry leftvers end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) such as the ne in Chile’s Atacama Desert, s vast as t be visible frm space. Many f these items are fast fashin—made quickly, sld cheaply, and in style fr t shrt a time because the industry relies n nvelty t keep cnsumers buying.
Every year the glbal fashin industry gives ff up t 10 percent f the wrld’s greenhuse gas. Grwing cttn invlves large quantities f harmful chemicals, and clring clthes pllutes rivers with dangerus waste. Man-made materials like nyln are made with fssil (化石) fuels and release micrfibers with every wash.
T address these prblems, it’s time t build a recycling system in fashin — ne that reuses clthes, clth and threads, recycles whenever pssible and encurages prducers and sellers t chse textiles and prcesses that minimize the use f raw resurces such as cttn.
As awareness increases, many peple are dnating t r buying frm secnd-hand stres r, when they shp new, lking fr “certified rganic” labels. Cnsumers shuld be aware that they can prd authrities and brands t take actin by deciding which brands t supprt. Under such
pressure, many cmpanies are trying t figure ut hw t remain prfitable while prducing less and ensuring that what they d make des less harm t peple and the planet. Cnsumers and cmpanies alne can’t slve such a vast eclgical and climate prblem, hwever. Last year Califrnia rlled ut an extended prducer respnsibility (EPR) law fr textiles, which requires brands with mre than $ 1 millin in glbal sales t pay fr reuse, repair r recycling f their prducts.
“We are watching clsely,” says Rachel Van Metre Kibbe, funder and CEO f advisry firm Circular Services Grup. “What I have in mind is a recycling ecnmy, which begins with designing prducts fr lasting use rather than quick replacement.”
Why d peple thrw away s many clthes each year?
      Many items are cheaply sld.
      Fashin trends change quickly.
      Mst clthes are prly made.
Peple tend t fllw the crwd.
What des the fashin recycling system advcate ding?
Cutting the share f fast fashin.
Making better use f existing resurces.
Lwering prices fr used clthes. D.Limiting the need fr prcessed prducts.
What des the underlined wrd “prd” in paragraph 4 mean?
      Urge.
      Supprt.
      Fllw.
      Accept.
What des Rachel value in prducts? A.Lw csts.
      B.Attractive designs.

Peple’s views are becming increasingly plarized, with scial bubbles (茧房) deepening existing beliefs and widening pinin gaps. This plarizatin desn’t just apply t plitical pinins; it als tuches n factual tpics, frm climate change t disease preventin. Accrding
t a recent study, peple use search engines in ways that cnfirm their existing beliefs, ptentially expanding plarizatin. A simple adjustment t search algrithms (算法), the researchers prpse, culd help deliver a brader range f perspectives.
Online participants were asked t rate their beliefs n six tpics, such as nuclear energy and the health effects f caffeine. They then chse search terms t learn mre abut each tpic. The researchers rated the terms’ scpe (范围) and fund that between 9 and 34 percent were “narrw”. Fr example, when researching the health effects f caffeine, ne participant used “caffeine
negative effects” while thers used “benefits f caffeine”. These narrw terms tended t match participants’ existing beliefs, and generally fewer than 10 percent did this knwingly.
“Search algrithms are designed t give the mst relevant answers fr whatever we type, which ends up strengthening what we already thught,” says Eugina Leung frm Tulane University, wh led the study. Similar results appeared when participants used ChatGPT. When researchers randmly assigned participants t view different results, they fund that the results affected peple’s pinins and even behavir. Fr example, participants wh saw results abut “caffeine
(咖啡因) health benefits”, rather than “risks”, were mre likely t chse a caffeinated drink
      afterward.
Pinting ut biases in the search terms had nly a small effect n peple’s final pinins. Hwever, changing the search algrithm t prvide brader results helped reduce the effects f narrw searches. “Peple are able t bring in different perspectives when they’re expsed t them, which is encuraging,” Leung says. The researchers recmmend applying such strategies, pssibly as “search bradly” buttns. “This wuld be really helpful,” Leung says, but whether it will ever happen “is hard t predict.”
What phenmenn des the authr pint ut in paragraph 1?
      Search engines create scial bubbles.
Public debates n factual tpics becme heated.
Opinins are increasingly divided n plitical issues.
Search habits are unknwingly expanding pinin gaps.
What is the feature f “narrw” search terms?
      They invlve brader ideas.
      They fllw scial trends.
      They match ppular beliefs.
      They strengthen established views.
What can we learn frm the example given in paragraph 3?
      Caffeine benefits peple’s health.
      ChatGPT prvides bjective infrmatin.
Search results may influence users’ chices.
      Online searches reflect persnal interests.
What is the researchers’ suggestin abut? A.Appraches t bradening search results. B.Chice f new research methds. C.Techniques fr identifying search biases.
      D.Necessity t invlve mre participants.
