The majrity f astrnauts frm America have been men. At the start f the space prgramme there was strng resistance frm sme peple against having wmen in space. Hwever, sme wmen were very keen t becme astrnauts and in the end they were successful. In 1978, NASA began the first training prgramme fr wmen astrnauts.
Judy Resnick and Christa McAuliffe were bth astrnauts and they were bth wmen, but in many ther ways they were very different. Bth f them were n Flight STS-5L-L. Judy Resnick was brn in 1949 and studied engineering at university and went n t btain a PhD in 1977. She was a member f the first grup f wmen selected fr astrnaut training in 1978, and in 1984, she became the secnd wman in space. During that flight, she helped t launch three new satellites and she carried ut a prgramme f research. She was, in many ways, a prfessinal astrnaut whse whle life was devted t space travel.
Christa McAuliffe was brn in 1948 and she was an astrnaut almst by accident. In 1984, NASA decided t find a teacher wh culd accmpany astrnauts int space. They hped that she wuld be able t cmmunicate with students frm space and encurage every ne f them t be interested in space travel. Christa was a secndary teacher in histry and scial studies. She was a gifted teacher and she was selected frm ver 11,000 applicants t g n flight STS-51-L. She was als a very gd cmmunicatr and she immediately established a very gd relatinship with the news media(radi, televisin and newspapers). It was partly because f this that there was a great deal f interest and excitement abut the flight. Thusands f students in schls and universities all arund the cuntry were lking frward t cmmunicating with Christa in space. Millins f peple were watching her flight with great interest.
