Why d men die earlier than wmen? The latest research shws that the reasn culd be than men’s hearts g int rapid decline (衰弱)when they reach middle age.
The largest study f the effects f ageing n the heart has fund that wmen’s lngevity may be linked t the fact that their hearts d nt lse their pumping pwer with age.
“We have fund that the pwer f the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years f age,” said the head f the study, David Gldspink f Liverpl Jhn Mres University in the UK.
“Within the heart there are millins f cells that enable it t beat. Between the ages f 20 and 70 , ne-third f thse cells die and are nt replaced in men,” said Gldspink. “This is part f the ageing prcess.”
What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little lss f these cells. A healthy 70-year-ld wman’s heart culd perfrm almst as well as a 20- year- ld ne’s.
“This gender difference might just explain why wmen live lnger than men,” said Gldspink.
They studied mre than 250 healthy men and wmen between the ages f 18 and 80, fcusing n healthy persns t remve the cnfusing influence f disease.
The team has yet t find why ageing takes a greater tll (造成损失)n the male heart, said Gldspink.
The gd news is that men can imprve the health f their heart with regular exercise. Gldspink stressed that wmen als need regular exercise t prevent their leg muscles becming smaller and weaker as they age.
