Grandma Mses is amng the mst celebrated twentieth century painters f the United States, yet she had barely started painting befre she was in her late seventies. As she nce said f herself “I wuld never sit back in a rcking chair, waiting fr smene t help me.” N ne culd have had a mre prductive ld age.
She was brn Anna Mary Rbersn n a farm in New Yrk State, ne f five bys and five girls. (“We came in bunches, like radishes.”) At twelve she left hme and was in dmestic service until at twenty-seven, she married Thmas Mses, first in Virginia and then in New Yrk State, at Eagle Bridge .She had ten children, f whm five survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Mses painted a little as a child and made embridery(刺绣) pictures as a hbby, but nly switched t ils in ld age because her hands had becme t stiff(僵硬的) t sew and she wanted t keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sld at the lcal drugstre(杂货店) and at a fair(展览会), and were sn sptted by a dealer wh bught everything she painted.
