N pem shuld ever be discussed r “analyzed”, until it has been read alud by smene, teacher r student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice f reading it twice, nce at the beginning f the discussin and nce at the end. All discussins f petry are, in fact, preparatins fr reading it alud, and the reading f the pem is, finally, the mst telling “interpretatin” f it, suggesting tne, rhythm, and meaning all at nce. Hearing a pet read the wrk in his r her wn vice, n recrds r n film, is bviusly a special reward. But even thse aids t teaching can nt replace the student and teacher reading it.
I have cme t think, in fact, that time spent reading a pem alud is much mre imprtant than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time fr bth. I think ne f ur gals as teachers f English is t have students lve petry. Petry is “ a criticism f life”, and “ a heightening(提升) f life”. It is “an apprach t the truth f feeling”, and it “can save yur life”.
I am nt saying that every English teacher must teach petry. Thse wh dn’t like it shuld nt be frced t put that dislike n anyne else. But thse wh d teach petry must keep in mind a few things abut its essential nature, abut its sund as well as its sense, and they must make rm in the classrm fr hearing petry as well as thinking abut it.
      40. T have a better understanding f a pem, ne shuld_________.
      A. discuss it with thers
      B. analyze it by neself
      C. cpy it dwn in a ntebk
      D. practise reading it alud
      41. Which f the fllwing is NOT mentined as a functin f petry? ____________
      A. Extending yur life.
      B. Saving yur life
      C. Criticizing life
      D. Heightening life
      42. Accrding t the writer, ne f the purpses f teaching English is t get students ______________.
      A. t understand life
      B. t enjy petry
      C. t becme teachers
      D. t becme pets
      43. What des the last sentence in the third paragraph imply? _________
      A. Mre stress was laid n the understanding f petry in the past.
      B. Petry is mre imprtant than any ther subject.
      C. One cannt enjy life fully withut an understanding f petry.
      D. Petry is the fundatin f all language and literature curses.

Old Cmputers Make fr Unhappy Wrkers --- Survey
LONDON (Reuters) ----- Dealing with the dissatisfactin f aging and unreliable ffice cmputers leads t wrkers’ unhappiness and mre sick leave, a survey shwed n Wednesday.
A survey carried ut by [email protected] f ver 2,700 Eurpean ffice wrkers frm the UK, France and Germany fund that wrkplace dissatisfactin increased greatly with the age f the cmputer equipment.
“We d knw that jb satisfactin is falling in Britain and mst advanced natins,” said Stephen White, a researcher frm the Wrk Fundatin. “The actual reasns fr this are the subject f very heated discussin. It’s certainly ne interesting thery that technlgy may be the cause f this in sme way,” White added.
A quarter f these using utdated cmputers in Britain said they were “quite” r “ very dissatisfied “ with their everyday jb cmpared t the percent f thse wh had enjyed an advantage frm up-t-date technlgy.
The survey als said that amng wrkers dealing with utdated equipment, there was a 35 percent greater prbability they wuld take six r mre days f sick leave per year cmpared with the average wrker. In France, where mre wrkers use ld cmputers, the prbability jumped t 55 percent.
Results als shwed that wmen in the three cuntries were mre likely t be using utdated equipment. In the UK, where mre wrkers have up-t-date cmputers than in the ther cuntries surveyed, the number f wmen using ld equipment dubled than f men.
White pinted ut that there were tw sides t this prblem, saying that cntinuusly having t deal with new technlgy and equipment can als be a surce f wrry. “Old and faulty equipment is a majr cause f ffice dissatisfactin. There is n questin abut it; but yu als have t say that the frequent change f equipment is als, r culd be, a main cause f dissatisfactin.”
      44. The underlined wrd “this” (paragraph 3) refers t ______.
      A. wrkplace dissatisfactin B. cmputer use in mst jbs
      C. the aging ff ffice cmputers D. the survey by care4@ free. net
      45. Hw many ffice wrkers use ld cmputers in Britain expressed their dissatisfactin?
      A. 16% B. 25% C. 35% D. 55%
      46. Accrding t White, why were the wmen surveyed mre likely t use ld cmputers?
      A. Mst ffice wrkers use ld cmputers.
      B. They d sme f their wrk with cmputers.
      C. Dealing with new equipment can cause anxiety.
      D. They are easier t be satisfied with new technlgy.
      47. What is the subject f the news stry?
      A. Pr wrking cnditins in ffices
      B. Research wrk f the Wrk Fundatin
      C. Influence f technlgy in the wrkplace.
      D. Different attitudes t ld cmputers.

The discvery f a dwarfed (矮个的)” human being” wh lived in Flres, Indnesia, up t 18,000 years ag is changing the way we think abut the human family .This “Flres Human” was three ft tall and her brain was smaller than that f the average chimp (黑猩猩), yet she and her relatives apparently lived fully human lives. They seem t have made tls, wrked tgether t find fd and ck it, and perhaps even buried their dead with ceremny.
It was a majr surprise t find tls assciated with the new human family member. The tls are like thse frmerly seen nly with Eurpean fssils (化石)frm ur wn species, Hm sapiens (智人);and the ldest f them were made 94,000 years ag. Hm sapiens is thught t have arrived in the island abut 40,000 years ag, much t late t be respnsible fr the tls. If this tiny human made the tls, then the inside structure (结构) f its brain must have been mre like ur wn than a chimp’s, despite being just a third the size f urs.
This “new human” was suspected t be a dwarfed branch f Hm erectus (直立人).When creatures are separated in regins with rare resurces but few enemies, being big is a disadvantage, and evlutin tends t shrink them, a prcess knwn as island dwarfing. Culd natural selectin make a human smaller while keeping----even imprving----mental ability? Quite pssibly, believes Christpher Wills f the University f Califrnia.
Has the “Flres Human” even shwn the ability f language? “I find it difficult t imagine that peple culd make tls, use fire, and kill large animals withut fairly advanced cmmunicatin.” Wills says. Did “Flres Human” pssess the basic cmpnents f human culture---such as the burying f the dead with ceremny ? Emilian Bruner f the Italian Institute pints ut that Indnesia’s ht, wet envirnment is bad fr fssilizatin. It is reasnable t assume, he says, that the 18,000-year-ld bnes f the mst cmplete Flres wman were well-preserved because she was buried with special care.
      48.Accrding t the passage , “Flres Human”______.
      lived a partly human life
was a branch f Hm sapiens
used tls befre Hm sapiens arrived
      had a brain as a cmmn chimp’s

      A. the tls made by “Flres Human”
      B. the language used by “Flres Human”
      C. the evlutin f “Flres Human”
      D. the majr surprising findings abut “Flres Human”
51.Accrding t the passage, it is believed that “Flres Human”_______.
was dwarfed by its enemies B. culd use language
      C. left a lt f fssils in ht and wet envirnment D. reached Flres 40,000 years ag

      Dear editr,
I’m writing t tell yu abut the discussin .Sme students tend t think that it is necessary fr middle schl students t carry mbile phnes t schl. They pint ut that it is mre cnvenient fr them t keep in tuch with their parents and classmates if they have a mbile phne. Additinally, it’s a fashin.
Hwever, mst teachers hld the view that it is nt necessary fr middle schl students t carry mbile phnes t schl. They argue that middle schl students are nt ld enugh t cntrl themselves.
