LITERARY EDITOR Sarah Shaffi SHARES HER NEW FAVOURITE READS
Whatever Happened t Madeline Stne by Luise O’Neill (Bantam, £16.99, ut 9th April). Teen acting twins Madeline and Chelsea are at the height f their fame when ne f them disappears. Chelsea steps away frm the sptlight — until twenty-five years later, when she realises Madeline culd still be alive. This is O’Neill at her best, mixing a thrilling plt with sharp cmmentary n fame, pwer, and men’s bad behaviur.
The Ending Writes Itself by Evelyn Clarke (HQ, £16.99, ut 7th April). A grup f writers are invited t crime authr Arthur Fletch’s Scttish island, nly t find him dead. Each guest must write an ending t his much-anticipated unfinished bk — then they realise they are being killed ff ne by ne. I lve the multiple perspectives, the island setting, and the way the tensin builds s brilliantly.
The Drwning Place by Sarah Hilary (Harvill, £16.99, ut 16th April). Detectives Jseph and Laurie are very different. He is the nly survivr f a schl bus crash and has lived in Edenscar his whle life. She has just arrived in the quiet Peak District twn with her husband t care fr his ill father. When a cruel crime takes place, the tw must wrk tgether and face hrrible memries frm the past. Vivid, mdy, and unsettling — I culd nt put it dwn.
N Such Thing as Mnday by Siân Hughes (The Indig Press, £14.99, ut 16th April). Steffie’s father spends his life terrrising his family. When he dies, she feels lst. The lss brings back memries f her childhd and hw badly her sister was treated. The cruel realism reminds me f Duglas Stuart’s Shuggie Bain. Despite being a shrt bk, it packs in the emtinal pwer and says s much abut grief and guilt.

T my surprise, I find artificial intelligence quite helpful arund ur small farm. My AI assistant, Claude, has helped me figure ut the amunt f gravel (砾石) fr a new driveway and train ur yung fruit trees. The nly prblem is that Claude makes me anxius. I was raised t believe that anything wrth having requires hard wrk. I fear AI will weaken my mind and make me dependent n a machine.
Frty years ag, when I started hbby farming in Australia, my main guide was a 1981 Reader’s Digest bk called Back t Basics. Its 464 pages taught me traditinal skills: raising cattle, grwing vegetables, even building with rammed earth. I still wn many Reader’s Digest bks. My ldest, a three-vlume garden guide frm 1963, is still useful, but with Claude at hand, it nw sits n the shelf cvered in dust mst f the time.
I als treasure a 1986 Reader’s Digest driver’s atlas (地图册). I used it until I finally gave in and started using GPS. The atlas has a wnderful sectin n identifying car nises: lud kncking, light tinkling, mysterius tapping, minus screeching...
I never subscribed t the magazine myself. But my father — despite his excellent educatin, r perhaps because f it — was extremely easy t fl. One day in the early 1980s, he called me excitedly, saying he had wn a £100,000 Reader’s Digest prize draw. Later he discvered it was a cmplete cheat. Yet he became ne f their mst devted readers anyway. Thank heaven he passed away befre they declined.
I suppse that is the real pint. The nly cnstant in life is, as Heraclitus pinted ut, change. I may wrry abut using Claude, but Claude wn’t be arund frever, like Reader’s Digest. In the meantime, it might as well suggest ways t increase hney prductin frm ur beehives (蜂巢).
24. What des the authr use Claude fr?
A. Replacing his ld bks.B. Teaching him t use GPS.
C. Writing articles abut farming.D. Helping with sme farm tasks.

C. The pssibility f its disappearance ne day.D. His father’s experience f being cheated by it.
26. Why des the authr share his lng histry with Reader’s Digest?
A. T prve that AI is mre useful than ld bks.
B. T recmmend Reader’s Digest t mdern farmers.
C. T shw that even reliable surces can becme utdated.
D. T explain his reasn fr n lnger trusting printed materials.
27. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?

Spend sme time n scial media, and yu will cme acrss many shrt vides f dgs “singing” alng t their favurite tunes. But can a dg shw any real musicality?
That’s the questin psychlgist Aniruddh Patel and his clleagues attempted t answer with an ear-catching new study, which shws that sme dgs really are detecting pitch (音高) and adjusting their vcals (歌声) accrdingly.
The researchers were inspired by wlves’ hwling behavir. Observatins suggest each wlf in a pack hits a different tne, creating an unharmnius chrus that scares away their natural enemies. “Wlf therists had therised that wlves actually knew what they were ding and changing their pitch,” says Patel.
T test this experimentally in an easy and pssible way, the team turned t huse pets. They asked dg wners t recrd their dgs’ harmnies t preferred tracks — first in the riginal key, then changed the key f the music three semitnes abve and belw — t see hw they respnded t pitch changes.
The team fcused n tw ancient breeds (品种), Samyeds and Shiba Inus, which are thught t be clser t their wlf ancestrs. Each dg had t prduce at least 30 hwls per versin fr statistical reliability.
All fur Samyeds shwed sensitivity t pitch, adapting their vcalisatins t the new key, thugh never matching it exactly. “They’re trying t have sme relatinship t what they’re hearing; they’re nt just releasing sme autmatic, inflexible respnse,” says Patel. The tw Shiba Inus, hwever, appeared tne-deaf. “There’s pssibly genetic variatin within ancient breeds,” Patel suggests.
The findings might ffer insights int the rigins f human music. Sme therists argue singing evlved frm the precise muscle cntrl used in speech, which allwed humans t reprduce cmplex sunds. But since dgs can adjust their pitch withut learning ther sunds first, language prbably wasn’t needed fr humans t develp music.
32. What writing technique is used by saying “ear-catching” in Paragraph 2?
A. Cmparisn.B. Definitin.C. Illustratin.D. Wrdplay.
33. Why did the researchers change the key f the music in the experiment?
A. T distract dgs’ attentin.B. T study dgs’ genetic variatin.
C. T test dgs’ respnse t pitch differences.D. T select a right dg species fr the study.
34. What did the experiment find ut?
A. All the chsen dgs were sensitive t pitch.
B. Shiba Inus had an inbrn talent t adapt t pitch.
C. Samyeds respnded t pitch faster than Shiba Inus.
D. Samyeds and Shiba Inus reacted t pitch changes differently.
35. What is the purpse f the last paragraph?
A. T inspire further studies.B. T summarize the experiment.
C. T aruse readers’ passin fr the tpic.D. T shw the study’s brader significance.

Christmas Eve mrning was filled with the sweet smell f cinnamn and pine in the Carters’ huse. Ten-year-ld Le stared up at the chimney (烟囱), his eyes full f mischief (调皮). Mm and Dad had left an hur ag t d the last-minute shpping, warning Le and his seven-year-ld brther, Mil, nt t get int truble. But Le had a secret plan. Santa might have hidden his gifts up there befrehand.
He pulled a kitchen chair t the fireplace, kicked ff his shes, and climbed nt the ledge (壁架). The bricks felt cld and rugh, leaving dark marks n his red sweater almst immediately. “Just a little further,” he whispered t himself, squeezing his bdy int the dark, narrw pening. The space gt tighter with every mve, and the sty (炭黑色) walls scratched his arms and face. Then, in a heart-stpping mment, he slipped. His legs swung in the air, and his chest became firmly stuck between the bricks. A wave f panic hit him — he culdn’t g up r dwn. The dusty air made it hard t breathe, and he started t cugh.

Shuld We Keep Eye Exercises?
Recently, I cnducted a survey amng students in ur schl n whether we shuld keep eye exercises. The results are as fllws.
30 percent f the students think eye exercises are effective and shuld be kept. Hwever, 20 percent believe they are useless and can be canceled. The majrity, 50 percent, argue that their effects are limited and that five minutes f utdr activities wuld be a better chice.
In my pinin, we shuld still keep eye exercises. They are easy t d and help relax ur eye muscles during busy study. Althugh their effect is nt very strng, they frm a gd habit f caring fr ur eyes. Meanwhile, cmbining them with shrt utdr activities will surely be mre helpful in prtecting ur eyesight.

【40题详解】
根据前文“Experts emphasize that sleep banking is nly a temprary slutin.(专家们强调,睡眠储蓄只是一个暂时的解决方案)”以及后文“Fr better sleep habits, setting a bedtime alarm can help create a relaxing wind dwn rutine. At the end f the day, healthy, cnsistent sleep remains the ultimate gal fr everyne.(为了养成更好的睡眠习惯,设置就寝闹钟有助于形成一种放松的睡前准备流程。每天结束时,健康且稳定的睡眠才是每个人最终的追求目标)”可知,忙碌期结束后应恢复正常作息。G选项“一旦忙碌的时期结束,重新恢复正常的作息时间尤为重要”符合逻辑。
