After ten years in Lndn, I recently relcated t Berlin, and as is custmary when making new friends, the
questin “Where are yu frm?” tends t cme up. My hnest answer wuld be, “I dn’t really knw.”
The truth is, mst f us TCKs (Third Culture Kids) — a term cined t describe “children wh mve between
cultures befre they have had the pprtunity t fully develp their persnal and cultural identity” — had n
chice grwing up but t fllw ur parents arund the wrld. We’d ften be tld, “Pack yur bags, kids. We’re
mving!” and in the blink f an eye, everything wuld change.
By the time I was 18, I had changed schls 10 times, mved cuntries at least 6 times, acquired a cnfusing
accent, and develped bth a lve f travel and a desire fr stability. Being an Indnesian-Italian, I ften felt an
identity crisis weighing n me in my teens.
Mving t a new cuntry after spending ten years in the UK — the lngest I have lived anywhere — has
brught back feelings f this cultural cnfusin. Grwing up as a TCK isn’t as charming as many peple wuld
expect. It is bth a blessing and a curse (诅咒), beautiful but unpredictable, and full f adventures. This lack f
rts and stability will likely cause issues later in life.
Ye t kids are adaptable. After vercming culture shck, yu start t adjust and see the bigger picture. Yu learn
that the wrld is much bigger than yu, and that yur prblems are small. Yu als learn respnsibility, respect
different beliefs, and frm yur wn pinins. Making friends and then lsing tuch teaches yu that everything is
temprary.
Grwing up as a TCK, yu rarely realize hw adaptable yu are, until yur lder friends ften cmment n
hw “wise and mature” yu are fr yur age. Travelling frm a yung age pens yur eyes beynd
“Hypernrmalizatin”. It teaches that diversity is nthing t be afraid f. Grwing up as a TCK was tugh, but I
wuldn’t trade it fr anything. It has shaped me t be the persn that I am tday — an actual “citizen f the
wrld”.
4. Hw des the authr usually respnd t “Where are yu frm”?
A. By stating her natinality directly. B. By admitting her uncertainty hnestly.
C. By explaining the TCK cncept briefly. D. By describing her experiences in detail.
5. What des the authr say abut TCKs’ childhd?
A. They enjyed planning their mves.
B. They resisted their parents’ decisins.
C. They maintained their persnal lifestyle.
D. They were frced t adapt t sudden changes.
6. Which f the fllwing can best describe TCKs’ experiences?
A. Tugh and cnfusing. B. Peaceful and predictable.
C. Rutine but eye-pening. D. Adventurus but beneficial.
7. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Grwing up as a TCK B. Challenges fr Migratin
C. Hw t Becme a Glbal Citizen D. Hw t Adapt t Diverse Cultures
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. A

On a summer afternn, the surface f a black asphalt (沥青) rf can reach 85°C — ht enugh t fry an
egg. These dark surfaces absrb mst f the sunlight that hits them, turning cities int dangerus “heat islands.”
During a severe heatwave, this extra warmth pushes already high temperatures several degrees higher, leading t
hundreds f avidable deaths each year. The slutin, sme urban planners argue, lies n tp f ur buildings.
Reflective rfs, als called “cl rfs,” are painted white r cated with special materials that bunce back
up t 85% f incming sunlight. By cntrast, a standard dark rf reflects nly abut 20%. Buildings with cl
rfs stay cler inside, reducing air cnditining use by 15‒30%. On a citywide scale, this means lwer electricity
bills, fewer pwer plant emissins, and mst imprtantly, safer streets during extreme heat events.
Ls Angeles became an early adpter. In 2013, the city required all new flat rfs t be cl rfs and started
cating existing rftps with a white, reflective sealant. Satellite images taken five years later shwed that surface
temperatures in cated areas drpped by an average f 2.5℃. The city als nticed smething unexpected:
residents living near cl rfs reprted imprved sleep quality, as the reflective cating reduced nighttime heat
release frm buildings.
Despite clear benefits, cl rfs face barriers in the city. Older buildings with tar and gravel rfs are
expensive t retrfit. Sme hmewners cmplain that white rfs shw dirt easily, reducing reflectivity ver time.
Meanwhile, winter cling culd increase heating csts. Researchers are develping adaptive catings that change
clr with temperature — dark in winter t capture heat, white in summer t reflect it.
As ne climate resilience expert puts it, “We cannt wait decades t redesign entire cities. Cl rfs are
smething we can install next mnth, n the building where yu live r wrk. That is why they are ne f ur mst
pwerful immediate tls.”
8. Hw d dark rfs affect cities during heatwaves?
A. They put mre residents at risk f death.
B. They keep buildings cler during heatwaves.
C. They weaken the structure f buildings ver time.
D. They increase the cst f cating existing rftps.
9. The wrd “bunce” in paragraph 2 is clsest in meaning t ________.
A. absrb B. return C. reflect D. send
10. What can be inferred abut the reflective sealant used in Ls Angeles?
A. It prduced a psitive effect n peple’s rest.
B. It wrked better n new buildings than n ld nes.
C. It mainly benefited hmewners with new buildings.
D. It reduced the need fr air cnditining in all cated buildings.
11. What is the main idea f the last paragraph?
A. Waiting decades t redesign cities is fine.
B. Redesigning cities shuld be ur tp pririty.
C. Cl rfs are the best slutin fr every city.
D. Cl rfs are a quick and wrkable fix.

Fr generatins, parents and teachers have warned children against daydreaming, calling it a waste f time.
Hwever, recent cgnitive neurscience research suggests therwise. Rather than being a sign f distractin,
daydreaming may represent a unique mental state where creativity and future planning flurish.
The key lies in the brain’s default mde netwrk (DMN), a set f regins that becmes active when peple
are nt fcused n external tasks. Far frm being idle, the DMN allws the brain t make remte assciatins
between seemingly unrelated ideas. In a 2021 study, participants wh cmpleted a tedius buttn-pressing task
fllwed by a rest perid shwed 40% mre creative slutins n subsequent prblems than thse wh mved
directly t a secnd demanding task. The rest perid, during which minds naturally wandered, allwed the DMN t
secure memries and generate nvel cnnectins.
Critics f deliberate mind-wandering pint t its bvius risks. Students wh daydream during lectures miss
critical infrmatin. Drivers whse attentin drifts pse safety dangers. Yet researchers distinguish between tw
types: unintentinal mind-wandering, ften triggered by bredm r tiredness, and intentinal mind-wandering,
where individuals cnsciusly allw their thughts t flw while remaining able t return t the task when needed.
The latter, when practiced under apprpriate cnditins, carries creative benefits withut significant csts.
Wrkplace studies supprt this distinctin. Emplyees given regular shrt breaks fr “structured daydreaming”
— reflecting n persnal gals r imagining future scenaris — reprted higher jb satisfactin and prduced
mre innvative ideas than thse fllwing cntinuus wrk schedules. Interestingly, the mst creative wrkers
surveyed exhibited nt fewer but mre frequent episdes f intentinal mind-wandering during lw-stakes tasks
such as data entry r rutine emails.
The implicatin is nt that students shuld abandn fcus during exams r drivers shuld lse attentin n
highways. Rather, the research suggests rethinking the cultural bias against daydreaming. Perids f mental
wandering, when deliberately emplyed in safe and lw-demand situatins, act as a hidden engine fr innvatin.
Learning t cntrl when and where the mind wanders may be as valuable as learning t fcus it.
12. What des recent research suggest abut daydreaming?
A. It serves a useful brain functin.
B. It nly happens when the mind is idle.
C. It helps the brain prcess external tasks.
D. It imprves the ability t fcus fr lng perids.
13. What did the 2021 study find abut participants wh rested?
A. They felt less mentally tired.
B. They shwed mre creativity later.
C. They shwed higher jb satisfactin.
D. They perfrmed better n memry tests.
14. What can be inferred abut intentinal mind-wandering?
A. It may bring safety dangers.
B. It may be cmmn during lw-stakes tasks.
C. It prevents ne frm returning t the task.
D. It reduces mental tiredness after demanding wrk.
15. What des the authr suggest abut daydreaming?
A. Practice it t reduce mental tiredness.
B. Apply it t bst creativity in all tasks.
C. Use it as a replacement fr fcused wrk.
D. Let yur mind wander n purpse during easy wrk.
