Nwadays when we need a surgical(手术上的) peratin r dental treatment, we are usually given an anesthetic (麻醉剂). There are tw kinds f anesthetic: ne stps the patient feeling the part f the bdy being perated n, and the ther puts the patient t sleep s that they dn’t feel anything. The first kind is called a lcal anesthetic and the secnd is called a general anesthetic.
Mdern anesthetics are cmplex chemicals, but in the past, dctrs and dentists used simpler chemicals, like alchl. In 1799 Sir Humphry Dary, the British chemist and inventr, discvered that a chemical called nitrus xide ( ften called laughing gas) culd reduce pain and make peple feel sleepy. Fr sme years peple used it at parties fr fun, but dctrs shwed little interest in it. The first persn t use a general anesthetic was prbably the American dentist, William Mrtn. He used a chemical called ether in Octber 1846.
The prblem with these early anesthetics was that they ften made the patient feel ill and dctrs culd accidentally give their patients t much, causing them t die. They were als difficult t give, as they had t be pured nt a piece f clth, which was then held ver the patient’s nse.
Mdern anesthetics are very safe. They are mre easily cntrlled, and there are expert dctrs called anesthetists wh specialize in giving them. There have als been great develpments in the use f lcal anesthetics, such as the intrductin f an anesthetic that is injected int the patient’s back t stp them feeling the lwer half f their bdy. This is ften used t reduce the pain f giving birth.
One f the ldest frms f anesthesia is acupuncture. This has been used in China fr many thusands f years and is nw being used increasingly in Western natins t treat many different health prblems. In acupuncture, special needles are stuck int the skin at particular pints, and smetimes electricity is passed thrugh them. This causes certain pain-killing chemicals, already in the bdy, t be released int the bld.

      One pssible versin:
      Dear Editr,
I’m a senir tw student. I’m writing t tell yu my pinin n whether middle schl students can g t schl with mbile phnes. I think they can d that, because students can stay in tuch with their friends and family wherever they are. Besides, the mbile phne is a way t have fun.
Hwever, there are sme prblems with using mbile phnes. The ring f phnes can disturb teachers and students in the classrm. Anther prblem is that sme students can spend t much time and mney n phne calls and sending messages.
In cnclusin, I suggest students nt use phnes in the classrm. Als, as it is expensive, the wner shuld take gd care f it.
      Yurs sincerely,
      Li Hua
