Peple have been trying t understand the human bdy fr a lng time.In 2, Gregr Mendel discvered a special reasn why we lk the same as ther peple in ur family. It is because f small things named “genes” in ur bdy.In 3, James Watsn and Francis Crick made anther discvery and fund ut that thse small parts are real messages written in the DNA with a special language.
In 4, Marshall Nirenberg and Jhann Mattaei fund a message in DNA shwing hw DNA tells the cell (细胞) t build its parts.Scientists have nw fund all the wrds in the DNA map, but we still d nt understand what they all d.By understanding what just ne “wrd” means, we can help save mre peple frm several illnesses.
Mst peple hpe that this will help make better medicine and help sick peple.Other peple wrry that when peple begin t knw mre wrds and find ut lts f ther infrmatin, we might use it in a wrng way, just t make peple mre attractive, r stp sick peple frm getting jbs.Man will have t meet a lt f truble if DNA technlgy (技术) isn’t limited in use.

14、 Is It Better t Read Bks r Listen t Them?
We ften think hw fast we learn smething depends n hw smart we are. If yur brain is taking in material quickly, yu’re clever; if nt, well, that desn’t say great things abut yur IQ. But science shws cntext (上下文) and technique (技术) actually play a big rle in hw fast we learn, and even small changes – like the way yu use t read – can make a big difference.
Audi (音频的) bks have plenty f advantages: yu can enjy them anywhere, even in the car, and nt printing bks saves trees. Pr readers als ften find them mre interesting. But accrding t the latest research, if yur gal isn’t t pass the time in traffic, but instead t learn smething difficult, yu shuld chse a physical bk.
In a recent pinin piece in the New Yrk Times, psychlgy (心理学) prfessr Daniel T.Willingham mentined a 2010 study where 48 students either read r listened t an article abut child psychlgy. Althugh the students spent the same amunt f time with their material and did abut the same number f distracting (分散注意力) activities while they absrbed the infrmatin, they scred very differently n a 10-item quiz later. Generally, the readers scred 81 percent but while the listeners scred 59 percent. Why des listening vs reading material have such a great effect n learning?
Willingham explains that first, mst f us read mre slwly than we listen (especially when pausing and rereading), and when yu’re trying t absrb new infrmatin, slwer seems t be better. “Abut 10 t 15 percent f eye mvements during reading are actually regressive – meaning the eyes are ging back and re-checking,” he explains t TIME. “This happens very quickly…”
Secnd, bks ffer visual cues (可视线索) that help ur brains rganize and understand new infrmatin. Things like chapter breaks, subheadings, and lists help us in making sense f the material and understanding hw it fits tgether. Yu lse all that when yu g the audi way.
The bttm line is simple: Dn’t feel shame abut passing yur time in traffic with an audi bk. Hwever, be aware f audi’s limitatins when it cmes t studying, and seriusly cnsider chsing gd ld-fashined reading instead.
1.Accrding t the writer, yu shuld chse t read a bk t ______.
A.take in the infrmatinB.pass the time in traffic
C.learn smething difficultD.rganize new infrmatin
2.A “physical bk” in Paragraph 2 prbably means “______”.
A.an audi bkB.a bk abut physics
C.a bk abut cmputerD.a bk made f paper r clth
3.What can we learn frm the passage?
A.T read a bk is better than t listen t it.
B.Readers are cleverer than listeners.
C.Reading bks is a gd way t pass time.
D.Hw fast we learn depends n hw smart we are.

15、Pictures That Dn’t Last
“YEARS ag when I was at the Grand Canyn, I remember smene cming up t the canyn’s edge, taking a sht with their camera and then walking away, like ‘gt it – dne’, barely even glancing at the magnificent (壮观的) scene sprawling (展开) in frnt f them,” Linda Henkel, a scientist at Fairfield University, US tld Live Science.
Henkel was surprised by hw bsessed (着迷的) peple are with taking pictures these days – befre dinner, during friends’ birthday parties, n museum turs and s n. Yu knw peple just like that, dn’t yu?
They keep taking pictures because they think that it helps recrd the mment, but as Henkel’s latest study has just fund ut, this bsessin may prevent their brains frm remembering what actually happened, reprted The Guardian.
In her study, Henkel led a grup f cllege students arund a museum and asked them t simply bserve 15 bjects and t phtgraph 15 thers. The next day the students’ memry f the tur was tested, and the results shwed that they were less accurate in recgnizing the bjects and they remembered fewer details abut them if they phtgraphed them.
“When peple rely n technlgy t remember fr them – cunting n the camera t recrd the event and thus nt needing t attend t it fully themselves, it can have a negative effect n hw well they remember their experiences,” Henkel explained.
But there is als an exceptin: if students zmed (缩放) in t phtgraph part f an bject, their memry actually imprved, and thse wh fcused the lens (镜头) n a specific area culd even recall parts that weren’t in the frame.
S basically, this study is saying that cnstantly taking pictures can harm yur memry. But shuldn’t reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up ur memries? This is true, but nly if we spend enugh time ding it.
“In rder t remember, we have t access(接近)and interact with the phts, rather than justamassingthem,” Henkel tld The Telegraph. Hwever, previus research has shwn that mst peple never take the time t lk ver their digital pictures simply because there are t many f them and they aren’t usually very rganized n their cmputers.

D.Peple shuld spend mre time studying real bjects than taking pictures f them.

A.displayingB.cllecting
C.intrducingD.remembering

18、One f the prblems with passwrds is that users frget them. In rder t remember them, peple use simple things like their dg’s name, their birth date, r the name f the current mnth-anything that will give them a clue t remember what their passwrd is.
Fr the curius hacker (黑客) wh has gained access t yur nline accunt, this is the same as lcking yur dr and leaving the key under the drmat (门垫).
T create a safe passwrd that is easy t remember, fllw these simple steps:
● Yu shuld never use persnal infrmatin as part f yur passwrd. It is very easy fr smene t guess things like yur last name, pet’s name, child’s birth date and ther similar details.
● There are tls available t help attackers guess yur passwrd. With tday’s cmputing pwer, it desn’t take lng t try every wrd in the dictinary and find yur passwrd, s it is best if yu d nt use real wrds fr yur passwrd.
● Yu can make a passwrd much safer by mixing different types f characters. Use sme uppercase letters (大写字母) alng with lwercase letters (小写字母), numbers and even special characters such as “&” r “%”.
● Rather than trying t remember a passwrd that is created using varius character types and is nt a wrd frm the dictinary, yu can use a “passphrase”. Think f a sentence r a line frm a sng r pem that yu like and create a passwrd using the first letter frm each wrd.
Fr example, rather than just having a passwrd like “yr $ 1 Hes”, yu culd take a sentence such as “I like t read the Abut. Cm Internet netwrk security website” and cnvert it t a passwrd like “il2rtA! nsws” by using the number “2” fr the wrd “t” and using an exclamatin pint (感叹号) in place f the “I” fr “Internet”. Yu can use a variety f character types and create a safe passwrd that is hard t figure ut, but much easier fr yu t remember.
● Yu shuld use a different username and passwrd fr each lgin yu’re trying t prtect. That way, if smene figures ut ne f yur passwrds, the thers are still safe. Anther apprach, which is less safe, but prvides a fair balance between security and cnvenience, is t use ne username and passwrd fr sites and applicatins that dn’t need the extra security, but use unique usernames and mre safe passwrds n sites that require mre security, such as yur bank’s website.
1.Hw is a passwrd made up f ne’s dg’s name r birthdate?
A.It is safe and easy t remember.
B.It can get hacked easily by attackers.
C.It suits thse wh have a pr memry.
D.It is the mst cmmnly used type f passwrd.
2.Accrding t the article, what is a passphrase made up f?
A.Different character types.
B.A lng dictinary wrd.
C.The title f a sng r a pem.
D.The first letter frm each wrd f a sentence.
3.Which f these passwrds might be the safest accrding t the article?
A.jessica208.B.yr $ 1 Hes.
C.HERO&37.D.il2rtA!nsws.
4.What’s the article mainly abut?
A.Hw t make yur passwrds safer.
B.Hw hackers get access t cmputers.
C.Hw t prtect yur private infrmatin nline.
D.Typical prblems with passwrds.
