My day was ruined befre I even gt ut f bed. I wiped sleep frm my eyes and reached ver t the night table where my fingers reached tward my smartphne. First things first: scan e-mails. Hwever, the review shattered all my expectatins. Wrds like “t careless” and “verly descriptive” jumped ff the screen, hurting my heart. I felt a wave f desperatin wash ver me, as if all my effrts had been in vain. I curled up in bed, questining my ability as a writer. Had my passin and dedicatin been nthing but a jke t the critics?
Fr hurs, I sank int self-dubt. But as I re-read Dale Carnegie’s wrds, a tiny spark f hpe emerged in my heart. Instead f letting the ne-star review defeat me, I decided t take actin. I gathered the cntact infrmatin f hundreds f bk blggers and sent them my bk, alng with a sincere nte sharing my writing jurney.
It was a tugh prcess. Many ignred my messages, and sme even declined plitely. But I refused t give up. Day after day, I kept reaching ut, and gradually, respnses started cming in. Several blggers praised my bk fr its heartfelt strytelling, and sme even recmmended it t their fllwers.
Eventually, my bk gained unexpected ppularity. Lking back, I realized that the “gld star” I had chased s eagerly was nt the true measure f success. The real victry was finding the curage t rise after falling, and the cnfidence t keep ging despite criticism. That painful experience taught me a precius lessn: success is nt abut never failing, but abut turning failures int stepping stnes tward grwth.

Actually, if yu’re like me, yu care fr the earth and yu even make a half-hearted effrt — yu recycle right up until it gets slightly incnvenient but anyhw yu stick t the habit f recycling.
Gvernments are always trying t mtivate us t recycle. My hmetwn New Jersey prvides everyne with recycling bins that are weighed and scanned at pick-up, encuraging residents with discunts and gift certificates t lcal shps and restaurants. In Berlin, yu hardly ever spt plastic bttles because they’re picked up right away as each water r sda purchase cmes with an extra cst r “depsit (押金)” f 30 cents that yu can get back frm autmated bttle return machines at the market.
What if all plastic started t have a financial value fr us? Wuld we finally be mtivated t recycle?
The cncept f scial plastic was develped in 2014 by David Katz under the banner f the rganizatin The Plastic Bank which makes mre rganized pints f sale fr lw-incme wrkers t sell their plastic finds. As Katz pints ut, with 300 millin tns f new plastic created every year, that’s actually trillins f dllars wrth f plastic in slw breakdwn all acrss ur planet. “If we can reveal the value in plastic, we can make it t valuable t thrw away. If we can reveal the value in peple, we can give them a platfrm t imprve their lives,” Katz said.
8. What des the authr think f peple’s cllecting and selling garbage?

Thrw a cin int a funtain, and yu knw what will happen. Being denser (密度更大的) than water, the metal sinks. But new research has challenged centuries f certainty. Scientists at the University f Rchester have develped aluminum (铝) tubes that wn’t sink even when heavily damaged — a trick the scientists brrwed frm spiders. Actually, many things in ur lives resist water — examples include cking il, a rain jacket r a rubber glve. Scientists call this prperty hydrphbicity (疏水性), but the secret t the metal tubes’ flating ability lies in superhydrphbicity.
Led by Prfessr Chunlei Gu, the team uses lasers (激 光 ) t carve micr structures int the aluminum surface, which can trap air effectively. Similar t spiders using fine bdy hairs t hld air bubbles fr breathing and staying aflat underwater, the metal tubes trap their wn air bubbles. Superhydrphbic surfaces make water bunce away instead f spreading and pushing air ut, and surface tensin prevents the water frm entering the tube. As a result, the air stays inside, and the tubes remain unsinkable.
The study builds n Gu’s earlier wrk designing unsinkable metals. In 2019 his lab demnstrated the cncept using laser-cut disks, but in rugh water, the disks verturned, and the air escaped. The new tubes slve this prblem with an internal divider at the middle f the tube, trapping air in a stable space. Even in rugh water ver weeks, their flating ability remains undamaged.
The implicatins f Gu’s wrk g beynd the labratry. Linked tubes culd create weight-bearing rafts r ships. Engineers might be clsing in n the dream f ships that stay aflat even as water purs in. One surprising applicatin invlves energy: Gu’s team demnstrated that rafts made f the tubes culd harvest waves t generate electricity.
The tubes are currently nearly half a meter lng, but Gu sees n barrier t increasing their size. The lasers are nw seven times mre pwerful than they were in 2019, when Gu first attempted laser-cut metal disks. “The technlgy,” he said, “culd be easily scaled t larger sizes.”
12. Hw can the metal tubes remain unsinkable?
第 10页/共 23页
A. By taking in much xygen frm water.
B. By trapping air and keeping water ut.
C. By absrbing water int their surfaces.
D. By using laser prcessing t lse weight.
13. What d we knw abut the disks in the 2019 research?
A. They lst balance in rugh water.
B. They had dividers in the structure.
C. They failed t run well in still water.
D. They stred air well in strmy water.
14. What is a ptential applicatin f the metal tubes?
A. String electricity fr ffshre equipment.
B. Preventing ships frm taking in any water.
C. Transprting gds with direct wave pwer.
D. Shipping heavy weights as flating structures.
15. What is Gu’s attitude tward the future f the technlgy?
A. Dubtful. B. Prmising. C. Critical. D. Uncncerned. 【答案】 12. B 13. A 14. D 15. B

As a result, the air stays inside, and the tubes remain unsinkable.

根据最后一段中 “ The tubes are currently nearly half a meter lng, but Gu sees n barrier t increasing their size. The lasers are nw seven times mre pwerful than they were in 2019... “The technlgy,” he said, “culd be easily scaled t larger sizes.” (这些管子目前有近半米长,但 Gu 认为扩大尺寸没有障碍。现在的激光功率是 2019 年的七倍 ……“ 这项技术,” 他说,“ 可以很容易地扩大到更大的尺寸。” )” 可知,Gu对这项技术的未来持乐观态度,认为其前景广阔。
