A lifetime f memries shape wh we are. Many years ag, several cwrkers and I develped a “Life, Career, and Educatinal Planning” curriculum fr adult learners. We knew that ur cmmunity cllege students had ften had unsuccessful experiences in schl, and that what led t fnd memries fr us, like the smell f crayns r a new blank ntebk, wuld have the ppsite effect n them. Our gal was t help them understand where the negative messages came frm and build their cnfidence.
My memries f schl are psitive. It was a place where I excelled and was frm an early age regarded as a leader. But when I was discussing different kinds f memries with my writing grup recently, I was surprised t discver that my memries f kindergarten were entirely negative. Since we mved in the spring f my kindergarten year, I have had tw distinct memries, which were humiliating (丢脸的) and still make me angry.
One day, in my first kindergarten we came t schl in cstume. I wre my cwgirl utfit with a blue fringed skirt and vest. As we were skipping in a circle, I yelled “giddy up!” and the teacher tld me t be quiet. I still remember thinking it was unfair. Hw culd I be a quiet cwgirl? I remember this was the first time that I was silenced in schl, but certainly nt the last. In later years, it wasn’t necessarily a matter f nt speaking, but f nt saying the “wrng” thing. The “wrng” thing challenged the teacher r the ppular thught — exactly what we wanted ur students t d.
On the first day at my new schl, which was the day after we mved, the teacher had me stand up in frnt f the class and asked me t share my telephne number and address. I knew neither. I frgt every phne number I had ever had, but nt KI7-5622. It has taken me years t be patient with “nt knwing” — my wn r thers.
They were such small incidents, but had such a large impact. I think they have made me a better teacher and cwrker.
24.What did the smell f crayns mean t the authr’s students?
A.It caused them negative feelings.B.It reminded them f happy days.
C.It was a sign f gd luck.D.It brught academic success.

A.It was her favrite number.B.It nce made her feel ashamed.
C.It was the teacher’s phne number.D.It was the address f her new hme.
27.Hw have the authr’s memries impacted her?

B.They have taught her t be patient with strangers.
C.They have helped frm her wn teaching philsphy.

Science has yet t discver a way t prevent vlcanic eruptins, s the early warning signs f vlcanic activity are key t keeping peple safe. One f the earliest signs that a vlcan is becming active is the presence f carbn dixide (CO2) emissins (散发). Hwever, because there is already plenty f carbn dixide present in the air at any given mment, it makes it difficult fr scientists t discver whether r nt there has been a vlcan-related increase in the atmsphere.
Befre nw, thse mnitring vlcanes wuld have t visit the vlcanes directly in rder t measure the utput f carbn dixide. This methd f detectin is ften dangerus, as vlcanes are awfully lcated in remte areas with difficult land shapes.
But hw can trees help indicate this increase in carbn dixide in an easily bservable manner? When a vlcan begins t prepare fr an eruptin, the mvement f magma (岩浆) thrugh Earth’s crust releases carbn dixide and ther gases. As these gases make their way t the surface, trees slurp up the carbn dixide and their leaves becme greener than befre.
Thankfully, these changes in tree leaves are easily visible frm space. S, by using NASA satellite technlgy t mnitr these bserved changes, scientists can be alerted t incming vlcanic activity sner than ther methds like earthquake activity and changes n the grund.
“Our research is a tw-way interdisciplinary intersectin between eclgy and vlcanlgy,” said Jsh Fisher, climate scientist at Chapman University. “We’re interested nt nly in tree respnses t vlcanic carbn dixide as an early warning f eruptin, but als in hw much the trees are able t take up, as a windw int the future f the Earth when all the Earth’s trees are expsed t high levels f carbn dixide.”
This cllabrative study is the first time changes in tree leaf clr have been psitively crrelated t magma-generated carbn dixide. The methd isn’t guaranteed t wrk every time, hwever, as factrs such as climate and weather cnditins determine whether the area surrunding a vlcan is suitable fr satellite mnitring.
28.What made it challenging fr the scientists t mnitr vlcanes earlier?
A.The inaccessibility f vlcanes.B.The lack f a warning system.
C.The insufficiency f carbn dixide.D.The pisn frm vlcan eruptin.
29.What des the underlined part “slurp up” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Mix up.B.Keep ff.C.Take in.D.Settle int.
30.What des Jsh Fisher aim t find ut thrugh their research?
A.The frequency f vlcanic eruptin.B.The tree species mst resistant t high CO2.
C.The way t cmbine eclgy with vlcanlgy.D.The cnditin f future Earth with high CO2.
31.What’s stressed abut the new methd in the last paragraph?
A.It’s premature.B.It has limitatins.
C.It’s cmplicated.D.It has high csts.
One f the mst surprising facts abut ants is that mst species dn’t have leaders in any meaningful sense. Yu may ask, “But what abut the queen?” Sure, queens exist, but their rle is reprductin, nt management. A queen desn’t direct wrkers, assign tasks, r make strategic decisins. Nt nly is there n leader barking rders, but wrkers dn’t issue cmmands t ne anther, either. Each ant perates based n lcal infrmatin and simple behaviral signals.
Despite this, ant grups can perfrm tasks that seem well-crdinated by design. They find the shrtest path t fd. They adjust rutes when bstacles appear. They allcate mre wrkers t rich fd surces and abandn pr nes. They even regulate traffic flw n busy trails t prevent vercrwding. Scientists refer t this as self-rganizatin. Order emerges as a result f many small interactins, nt frm tp-dwn cntrl. The glue hlding this system tgether is phermnes (信息素).
Put bradly, phermnes are chemical substances that animals release t influence the behavir f thers f the same species. Ants prduce many different phermnes, each serving a specific purpse. Sme signal alarm, thers mark territry, and thers indicate fd surces. When an ant finds fd, it ften lays dwn a phermne trail as it returns t the nest. But this trail isn’t just a simple line that says: fd here. It cntains layered infrmatin. Other ants can “read” a trail’s strength, freshness, and chemical makeup, allwing them t infer things like hw many ants have used it, hw recently, and whether it was laid after a successful find.
Ants interpret these phermne trails using highly sensitive antennae (触角) that allw them t detect extremely small amunts f these chemicals. By tuching the grund with their antennae as they walk, ants cntinuusly sample the chemical landscape arund them — like reading Braille with ne’s fingertips.
In the mst simplistic terms, if a trail is wrth fllwing, the ants will lay dwn phermnes that say s; if it isn’t, they wn’t. In this way, the ants essentially vte where t invest their labr.
32.Hw d ants behave in search f fd?
A.They each perfrm their assigned tasks.B.They interact with each ther frequently.
C.They bey the queen’s cmmands strictly.D.They fllw the decisin f their leader.
33.What infrmatin can ants get frm a phermne trail?
A.The existence f fd.B.The number f their enemies.
C.The harm f chemicals.D.The lcatin f their nest.
34.Why des the authr mentin Braille in the furth paragraph?
A.T define a new cncept.B.T draw an apprpriate cnclusin.
C.T prvide the backgrund.D.T enhance clarity by cmparing.
35.What is the text mainly abut?
A.Chemical prperties f phermnes.B.Ants’ fd-seeking strategies.
C.Ants’ self-rganizatin ability.D.Ant queens’ leadership.
On his 15th birthday, Wilsn Bentley’s mther gave him an ld micrscpe. It was snwing that day, and the by succeeded in getting a glimpse f a six-sided snwflake (雪花) with the device. 36
When he was 17, Bentley asked his parents t buy him a new, better micrscpe and a camera. Bentley then spent 2 years figuring ut hw t take a picture f a snwflake under a micrscpe. On January 15, 1885, he did it, creating the wrld’s first phtmicrgraph.
37 Outdrs, he cllected snwflakes n a wden tray that was painted black. Once inside, while still wearing big glves t keep his hands warm, he used a straw (吸管) t pick up the snwflake and place it n a micrscpe slide. Then being careful nt t breathe n the flake, he quickly examined and phtgraphed it.
Taking phtmicrgraphs was nly half f a lng prcess. In thse days, glass plates (感光板) were used t take phtgraphs. Bentley develped the plates in a dark rm under sme stairs and then carried the plates t a nearby stream t wash them. 38
Bentley shared his snwflakes with anyne interested. He sld prints f his phtmicrgraphs fr 5 cents each. He wrte articles fr scientists and fr magazines such as Natinal Gegraphic. Occasinally, he felt discuraged that few peple seemed t care abut his wrk. 39 At age 65, he phtgraphed his 5,000th snwflake.
Slwly, peple became interested. Reprters smetimes appeared at his dr. Peple began t call him “the Snwflake Man” and “Prfessr Bentley.” 40 In 1920, Bentley was elected as ne f the first members f the American Meterlgical Sciety, which later awarded him its first research grant in 1924.

根据第一段“We knew that ur cmmunity cllege students had ften had unsuccessful experiences in schl, and that what led t fnd memries fr us, like the smell f crayns r a new blank ntebk, wuld have the ppsite effect n them.(我们知道,我们这些社区学院的学生以往在学校的学习经历往往并不顺利,而那些能让我们产生美好回忆的东西,比如蜡笔的气味或者一本崭新的空白笔记本,对他们而言却会产生完全相反的效果)”可知,蜡笔的气味对这位作者的学生们意味着它让他们产生了负面情绪。
根据第三段“One day, in my first kindergarten we came t schl in cstume. I wre my cwgirl utfit with a blue fringed skirt and vest. As we were skipping in a circle, I yelled “giddy up!” and the teacher tld me t be quiet. I still remember thinking it was unfair. Hw culd I be a quiet cwgirl?(有一天,我上的第一所幼儿园,我们穿着各种各样的服装来上学。我穿上了我的牛仔装,搭配着一条蓝色的流苏短裙和一件背心。当我们围成一圈跳着舞时,我大喊“驾!”但老师却让我安静下来。我仍然记得当时心里觉得这不公平。我怎么能是个安静的牛仔女孩呢?)”可知,作者高喊“驾!”的目的是表现得像一个真正的牛仔女郎。
26.细节理解题。根据第二段“Since we mved in the spring f my kindergarten year, I have had tw distinct memries, which were humiliating (丢脸的) and still make me angry.(自从我们在我上幼儿园那年的春天搬家以来,我有两个清晰的记忆,它们让我感到耻辱,至今仍令我生气。)”以及第四段“On the first day at my new schl, which was the day after we mved, the teacher had me stand up in frnt f the class and asked me t share my telephne number and address. I knew neither. I frgt every phne number I had ever had, but nt KI7-5622. 27.细节理解题。根据最后一段“They were such small incidents, but had such a large impact. I think they have made me a better teacher and cwrker.(这些事情虽然都很小,但却产生了巨大的影响。我认为它们使我成为了一名更好的老师和同事)”可知,作者的回忆帮助塑造了她自己的教学理念。

【导语】文章介绍了一种通过卫星监测火山附近树木叶子颜色变化来预警火山活动的新方法,该跨学科研究有助于预警,也为理解全球高二氧化碳环境下的未来提供了视角。
【详解】28.细节理解题。根据第二段“Befre nw, thse mnitring vlcanes wuld have t visit the vlcanes directly in rder t measure the utput f carbn dixide. This methd f detectin is ften dangerus, as vlcanes are awfully lcated in remte areas with difficult land shapes.
A. Mix up混淆;B. Keep ff避开;D. Settle int适应。
根据第五段中Jsh Fisher所说的话“We’re interested nt nly in tree respnses t vlcanic carbn dixide as an early warning f eruptin, but als in hw much the trees are able t take up, as a windw int the future f the Earth when all the Earth’s trees are expsed t high levels f carbn dixide. (我们不仅对树木对火山二氧化碳的反应(作为喷发的早期预警)感兴趣,也对树木能吸收多少二氧化碳感兴趣,这可以作为一扇窗口,窥见地球上所有树木都暴露在高浓度二氧化碳下的未来地球的状况。)”可知,Jsh Fisher希望通过研究发现未来地球在高二氧化碳条件下的状况。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The methd isn’t guaranteed t wrk every time, hwever, as factrs such as climate and weather cnditins determine whether the area surrunding a vlcan is suitable fr satellite mnitring. (然而,该方法并不能保证每次都能奏效,因为气候和天气条件等因素决定了火山周围区域是否适合卫星监测。)”可知,这里强调了这一新方法存在局限性。

【导语】文章主要介绍了蚂蚁在没有领导者的情况下,通过信息素和自组织能力实现高效协作的行为。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第一段中“A queen desn’t direct wrkers, assign tasks, r make strategic decisins. Nt nly is there n leader barking rders, but wrkers dn’t issue cmmands t ne anther, either. Each ant perates based n lcal infrmatin and simple behaviral signals. (蚁后不指挥工蚁、不分配任务,也不制定战略决策。不仅没有发号施令的领导者,工蚁之间也不会互相下达命令。每只蚂蚁都依据局部信息和简单的行为信号来行动)”以及第二段中“They find the shrtest path t fd.
根据第三段中“When an ant finds fd, it ften lays dwn a phermne trail as it returns t the nest. But this trail isn’t just a simple line that says: fd here. (当一只蚂蚁找到食物时,它常常在返回巢穴的途中留下信息素轨迹。但这条轨迹不仅仅是简单的一条线,写着:这里有食物)”以及“Other ants can “read” a trail’s strength, freshness, and chemical makeup, allwing them t infer things like hw many ants have used it, hw recently, and whether it was laid after a successful find. (其他蚂蚁可以“解读”轨迹的强度、新鲜度和化学成分,从而推断出有多少蚂蚁使用过它、使用的时间有多近,以及它是否是在成功觅食后留下的)”可知,蚂蚁可以从信息素轨迹中获取食物存在的信息。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段中“By tuching the grund with their antennae as they walk, ants cntinuusly sample the chemical landscape arund them — like reading Braille with ne’s fingertips. (蚂蚁在行走时用触角接触地面,持续采样周围的化学环境——就像用手指触摸阅读盲文一样)”可知,作者将蚂蚁用触角探测信息素比作用手指触摸阅读盲文,这是通过对比来让作者的意思变得清晰易懂。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“One f the mst surprising facts abut ants is that mst species dn’t have leaders in any meaningful sense.(关于蚂蚁,最令人惊讶的事实之一是,大多数物种都不存在任何真正意义上的“领导者”)”和第二段“Despite this, ant grups can perfrm tasks that seem well-crdinated by design. ... Scientists refer t this as self-rganizatin. Order emerges as a result f many small interactins, nt frm tp-dwn cntrl. (尽管如此,蚂蚁群体却能执行看似精心协调的任务。……科学家将此称为“自组织”。秩序是许多微小互动的结果,而非自上而下的控制)”可知,文章第一段指出蚂蚁没有领导者,第二段介绍蚂蚁通过自组织完成协调任务,第三、四段详细解释信息素的作用机制,第五段总结。因此,本文主要讲述的是蚂蚁的自组织能力。

Then being careful nt t breathe n the flake, he quickly examined and phtgraphed it. 详细描述他在户外收集雪花、用吸管移动雪花、小心避免呼吸影响等细节,因此B项“The prcess was difficult and cld. 39.上文“Occasinally, he felt discuraged that few peple seemed t care abut his wrk. (有时,他会感到有些沮丧,因为似乎很少有人关心他的工作。)”提到他有时会沮丧,下文“At age 65, he phtgraphed his 5,000th snwflake. (在65岁那年,他拍摄了自己第5000片雪花的照片。)”表明他仍坚持着这项热爱,因此A项“Still, he never stpped. (尽管如此,他从未停止。)”符合语境,和上文构成转折,衔接下文的坚持。
40.上文“Slwly, peple became interested. Reprters smetimes appeared at his dr. Peple began t call him “the Snwflake Man” and “Prfessr Bentley.” (渐渐地,人们开始对他产生了兴趣。记者们有时会来到他家门前。人们开始称他为“雪花先生”和“Bentley教授”。)”指出他受到关注,并列举具体事例佐证,因此D项“Jewelry makers cpied the snwflake designs. (珠宝制造商仿制雪花设计。)”符合语境,说明他的工作启发了艺术和商业领域,和上文的事例并列,句式相仿,共同支撑段首提到的关注。
