Steve Bagmanyan fund his calling in a wrkshp filled with brken instruments. But
every year, the shp brings bth jy and heartbreak. Due t budget cuts, the number f
technicians has drpped frm 60 t just 11, leaving them t repair instruments fr mre than
half a millin students in Ls Angeles public schls.
“The wrk we d is imprtant and needs t be preserved, but it’s becming a dying craft,”
said Bagmanyan, 60, wh runs the shp and handles pian repairs. “Children are ur future, yet
music prgrams are being cut acrss the cuntry.”
Hwever, there is hpe fr the shp. The Last Repair Shp, a shrt dcumentary featuring
Bagmanyan and three ther technicians, recently wn an Oscar fr best dcumentary shrt film.
The film cmbines their persnal stries with reflectins frm students wh have fund
      cmfrt and jy in music.
Few peple even knew the shp existed befre the dcumentary’s release. This wrkshp,
in peratin since 1959, is believed t be the last f its kind in the cuntry. Bagmanyan and his
team prvide free instruments and repairs acrss the schl district, ften serving children frm
lw-incme families. Fr many f these children, public schls are their nly surce f
musical instruments, which wealthier families can mre easily affrd.
Since the release f the film, public supprt has sared. Dnatins have been made t fund
mre repairs and strengthen schl music prgrams in Ls Angeles. “Peple are inspired by
what we d and want t supprt a dying art frm,” said Ben Prudft, wh c-directed the
      dcumentary.
Bagmanyan knws that a prly maintained instrument can discurage a child frm
learning. “If an instrument desn’t wrk prperly, a child might give up n music,” he said.
“But when yu knw the instrument is ging t a student wh lves it, it’s impssible nt t
      smile.”
After 21 years f service, Bagmanyan says his cup is full, knwing that children may carry
a lve f music with them fr a lifetime. “I was planning t retire,” he admitted. “But nw I’ll
rebuild the shp t what it nce was and keep ging a little lnger.”
      24. What is the challenge faced by Bagmanyan?
      A. Old instruments. B. Declining number f students.
      C. Lw prfitability. D. Shrtage f skilled technicians.
      4
      25. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
      A. The career achievements f Bagmanyan.
      B. The ppularity f the dcumentary.
      C. The unique histry f the schl district.
      D. The imprtance f the repair shp.

      C. It helps sustain the shp’s peratin.
      D. It prvides educatin t the cmmunity.
      27. Which wrds can best describe Bagmanyan?

The message is repeatedly tld t us frm childhd: frgive peple wh’ve wrnged yu
because it’s the nly way t heal. Frgiving smene can indeed be beautiful, but if the
relatinship isn’t healthy, trying t “fix” things can d mre harm than gd.
Mst agree frgiving a wrngder means letting g f negative feelings like anger and
hatred twards them, expecting t put it all behind us as if nthing happened. Yet this pressure
t “mve n” can make us feel ur experiences dn’t matter, r, at least, that they matter less
than the situatin being smthed ver. This isn’t helpful. While it’s nt a gd idea t fcus n
negative thughts, recgnizing and prcessing all f that pain is an imprtant part f the healing
      jurney.
Frgiving thse wh dn’t make us feel safe chips away at ur dignity. A 2010 study
called this the “drmat effect”: frgiving partners wh dn’t value us reduces self-respect,
alng with a decreased sense f self. The same applies t frgiving thse wh refuse t make
changes, prbably because the victims feel they fail t stand up fr themselves, like they’ve let
themselves be walked ver, as the authr puts it.
Things can get wrse if we keep n frgiving smene wh’s dne wrng. A 2011 study
lked at hw 72 newlywed cuples expressed frgiveness twards acts f ffence(冒犯), and
whether this caused any changes in the ffenders’ behaviur. It turned ut that when a partner
frgave thse acts, the ffender was mre likely t keep ding them prbably because facing
the cnsequences f their actins is what mtivates peple t change their ways, and being
frgiven can be a kind f pass t avid making changes.
      5
This reveals the tensin in always frgiving: it burdens victims t reslve issues, nt
ffenders. What if, instead f lking t frgiveness like a cure-all, we accept a situatin fr
what it is withut any sense f bligatin twards ur ffender? This way, healing will still be a
prcess, but it’s ne centred arund us and ur wn needs.
      28. What d mst peple believe abut frgiveness?
      A. It ffers a quick slutin t all emtinal cnflicts.
      B. It always strengthens the relatinship between peple.
      C. It means frgetting unpleasant things happening in the past.
      D. It depends n the wrngder making meaningful changes first.
      29. What des the underline phrase “chips away at” in the paragraph 3 mean?
      A. gradually weakens B. accidentally destrys
      C. carefully repairs D. intentinally ignres
      30. What des the “drmat effect” in paragraph 3 explain?
      A. Victims frgiving a wrngder increases their mtivatin t change.
      B. Frgiveness plays a majr rle in healthy cmmunicatin.
      C. Frgiveness reflects the ffender’s failure t insist n their bundaries.
      D. Uncnditinal frgiveness may have a negative impact n the victim.
      31. What alternative apprach des the authr suggest fr healing?
      A. Cutting ff all cntact with ffenders.
      B. Pretending the ffense never ccurred.
      C. Frcing ffenders t admit their mistakes.
      D.Priritizing ne’s wn needs and well-being.
      D.
An AI-pwered rbt was able t separate a gall bladder (胆囊) frm the liver f a dead
pig in what researchers claim is the first realistic surgery by a machine with almst n human
      interventin.
The rbt is pwered by a tw-tier AI system trained n 17 hurs f vide cntaining
16,000 mtins perfrmed by human surgens during peratins. When put t wrk, the first
layer f the AI system watches vide, mnitrs the surgery and issues plain-language
instructins, while the secnd AI layer turns each instructin int 3D tl mtins. In all, the
gall bladder surgery requires 17 separate tasks. The rbtic system has perfrmed the peratin
eight times, achieving 100 percent success in all f the tasks.
“Current surgical rbtic technlgy has made sme prcedures less invasive, but risks
      haven’t really drpped frm previus laparscpic (使 用 腹 腔 镜 的 ) surgeries by human
surgens,” says team member Axel Krieger at Jhns Hpkins University in Maryland. “This
      6
made us lk int what is the next generatin f rbtic systems that can help patients and
surgens.” “The study really highlights the art f the pssibility with AI and surgical rbtics,”
says Danail Styanv at University Cllege Lndn. “Incredible advances in cmputer visin
fr surgical vide with the availability f pen rbtic platfrms fr research make it pssible
      t demnstrate surgical autmatin.”
But many challenges remain t make the system practical in clinical use. “While the rbt
cmpleted the task with 100% success, it had t self-crrect six times per case. Fr example,
this culd mean a gripper (夹持器) designed t grasp an artery missed its hld n the first try,”
      Styanv said.
“There were a lt f instances where it had t self-crrect, but this was all fully
autnmus,” says Krieger. “It wuld crrectly identify the initial mistake and then fix itself.”
The rbt als had t ask a human t change ne f its surgical instruments fr anther,
meaning sme level f human interventin was required. The next step, says Krieger, is t let a
rbt perate autnmusly n a live animal, where breathing and bleeding culd cmplicate
things. “But with cntinued research, we’re cnfident that we can vercme these bstacles
      step by step.”
      32. What are the tw-tier tasks that the AI system is trained t perfrm?
      A. Giving instructins and perfrming mtins.
      B. Mnitring the surgery and issuing cmmands.
      C. Analyzing vide and chsing surgical tls.
      D. Imitating human surgens and separating tasks.
      33. What breakthrugh des the new rbt achieve ver traditinal laparscpic surgeries?
      A. Minimal invasiveness with n danger.
      B. Near autnmy with high success rate.
      C. Lw risks in cmplex surgical tasks.
      D. Faster self - crrectin speed in peratins.
      34. What may prve challenging in a rbt peratin accrding t the last paragraph?
      A. Adapting t real-time variability.
      B. Identifying surgical mistakes quicker.
      C. Reducing human help fr crucial tasks.
      D. Dealing with cmplicated surgeries.
      35. Which f the fllwing title best summarizes the passage?
      A. The Rbtic Surgery: Cutting Medical Risks
      B. The Rbtic Surgery: Great Clinical Prgress
      C. The Rbtic Surgery: Simplifying Surgery
      D. The Rbtic Surgery: Success and Onging Issues

Few activities are mre engaging than strytelling. Students are primed t tell stries, and
teachers can design digital strytelling as capstne prjects (毕业设计). Strytelling naturally
ignites emtin, leading t memrable learning, and allws mvies t serve as summative
      assessments.
Getting started requires guiding students t develp a script. 36 A key pint is that
digital stries differ frm reprts. Merely reciting facts creates a prduct easily generated by AI.
A better strategy is t ask students t wrap their learning in a narrative structure. Narrative
prvides a framewrk fr learning new infrmatin. Fr example, students can persnify a
cncept like ratinal numbers r a histrical bject. 37
38 They can plan their mvie using a strybard r tw-clumn script. Take sme
time t teach explicitly the cncept f “agreement”, r matching what the viewer sees t what
they hear in the script. Thinking abut this cmplementary prcess, and taking the time t plan
visuals and sunds, allws students t build audivisual literacy skills, t.
The mst imprtant cmpnent f a student mvie prject is the sund. Viewers verlk
technical flaws but struggle with pr audi. Students shuld practice scripts alud fr fluency.
      39
During editing, remind students f agreement between visuals and audi. Start simply,
then encurage explring features like green screens. As fr audi, music has a pwerful
impact n strytelling because it tells viewers hw t feel. By discussing tne and md,
students better understand hw sng selectin affects the audience’s perceptin f their ideas.
40 Finally, ffer repeated pprtunities fr vide creatin acrss subjects. This develps
      strytelling prficiency and fluency.
      A. Meanwhile, they shuld cnsider clear recrding techniques.
      B. Auditry effects shuld always be the fcus f student prjects.
      C. In additin, prvide -free sund resurces fr them t use.
      D. After having a slid script, students shuld mve n t planning their film.
      E. Hwever, many students initially apprach it like writing a traditinal reprt.
      F. Fr instance, using earbuds with micrphnes can greatly imprve sund quality.
      G. Using universal stry structures, they integrate facts int a character’s experience.

gathering tgether nt far frm the shreline. My mind traveled back t the past. My dad had
been a fish and wildlife fficer. He lved his jb, especially the part where he prtected nature

Suddenly, Isaiah’s vice brught me back, “Lk, smething was cming.” Fllwing the

      tward us.
Walking int the water, getting clser t the ln, we bth saw thin wire wrapped arund
its neck and bld spts by its wing. Fishing line maybe? Was it the hk n the line that made
it bleed? Was the ln asking us fr help?
