Chemical cmpanies campaigned against it strngly, as Carsn’s warnings threatened their established and prfitable practices. Despite this ppsitin, the bk raised glbal awareness abut hw easily nature can be harmed.
Carsn’s deep cnnectin t nature began in her childhd in Pennsylvania, where she explred the wds and streams near her hme. This passin led her t study bilgy, which gave her the scientific knwledge she wuld later use in her writing.
Befre Silent Spring, Carsn was a marine bilgist and writer. She spent fur years carefully researching fr the bk, gathering evidence frm scientific studies and talking t farmers and fishermen wh had seen the effects f pesticides. She built a strng argument based n data and persnal accunts.
Knwing her wrk wuld be criticized, Carsn believed the public had the right t knw the truth. She cntinued her effrts even while she was sick, and she died in 1964. Hwever, her influence lived n. It was the summer befre junir year. I was a waitress at a little restaurant. My duties were straightfrward: taking rders, delivering fd and cleaning tables. I gt really gd at managing multiple tasks, and having a lt f respnsibilities made me mre respnsible.
These values and skills are what numerus studies hld up as the imprtant reasns why teenagers shuld wrk during the summer. They’re what teachers mentin when they encurage us t get jbs. I develped thse skills. But I dn’t think that’s the main benefit high schl students get frm wrking.
S much happened in the interstitial (空隙的) time and spaces between ur rles as waitresses, cks and custmers. This is where I think the value f a high schl jb lies: learning hw t frm a cmmunity with peple I never wuld have therwise knwn.
High schl students spend abut seven hurs a day in classes, and then ften stay afterward fr schl-spnsred sprts r activities. It’s nt necessarily a bad thing t be wrapped up in schl. But what I find is that a jb can serve as a relief frm the academic tasks f high schl.
This relief came nt frm aviding peple, but frm engaging with a cmmunity I wuld never have fund in the halls f my high schl. The peple I met at the restaurant taught me that yu can becme friends with thse decades lder than yu and strangers wh have nne f the same interests r hbbies as yu d. They taught me that yu can wildly disagree with smene and still respect them, learn frm them, and lve them.
      8. What is cmmnly believed t be the main benefit teenagers get frm wrk?
      A. Earning mney fr cllege.
      B. Learning t frm a cmmunity.
      C. Develping respnsibility and skills.
      D. Making friends with different peple.
      9. What des the authr say abut high schl life?
      A. It lacks meaningful activities.
      B. It fcuses n academics.
      C. It is highly schl-centered.
      D. It prvides adequate scial pprtunities.
      10. What did the authr learn frm peple at the restaurant?
      A. Friends shuld share similar interests.
      B. Wrkplace relatinships are temprary.
      C. True friendship requires cnstant agreement.
      D. Meaningful cnnectins can bridge differences.
      11. What is the authr’s main cnclusin abut her jb experience?
      A. It helped imprve her academic perfrmance.
      B. Its greatest value went beynd skill develpment.
      C. It cnfirmed traditinal views abut student jbs.
      D. Its main benefit was earning teachers’ apprval.
      D
Sharks are dying at staggering rates, primarily due t fishing activities. Nearly ne-third f shark species glbally are threatened with extinctin. While sme sharks are intentinally targeted, mre than half are caught incidentally as bycatch and later thrwn away, cntributing significantly t their decline.
In respnse, reginal fisheries management rganizatins have intrduced retentin (留存) bans that require fishermen t release accidentally captured sharks. Currently, 17 ceanic shark species are prtected under such bans in tuna fisheries.
A research team frm UC Santa Barbara cllected data frm ver 150 published studies cvering nearly 150 species t estimate mrtality (死亡) rates fr caught and released sharks. Their findings revealed particularly high pst-release mrtality amng certain grups: smaller sharks, deep-water species, and thse requiring cnstant swimming t breathe. Ntably, thresher sharks, hammerheads, and smthhund sharks shwed mrtality rates ranging frm 30% t 65%.
The study demnstrated that while retentin bans culd reduce shark mrtality by three times n average, this reductin remained insufficient t achieve sustainable levels fr heavily fished species such as mak and silky sharks.
The authrs stress that retentin bans are a gd first step, but they must be cmbined with ther measures. These include changing fishing gear (fr example, nt using steel wires in lngline fishing), prtecting key shark habitats (especially areas where yung sharks are brn and grw up), and setting limits n hw many sharks can be caught. Such cmprehensive appraches are essential fr effective shark cnservatin.
Mrever, the researchers pint ut that we knw very little abut related fish with cartilaginus fishes — such as rays, skates, and chimaeras. These fishes face similar threats f extinctin, but there are nt enugh studies n hw many die due t fishing. The research team is nw wrking with internatinal tuna rganizatins t encurage cnservatin talks and find effective mixes f plicies.

      C. Deep-water species.D. Species with slw reprductive rates.
      15. What is paragraph 5 mainly talking abut?
