In 2022, satellites bserved the striking lss f five separate emperr penguin breeding sites near the Bellingshausen Sea: The sea ice beneath them brke apart, leading t an estimated lss f sme 10,000 chicks. Current emperr penguin ppulatins are estimated at arund 595,000 adults, a decrease f 10 percent t 22 percent relative t 2009. The current ppulatin number is expected t halve by 2080, IUCN says.
