Best Trucks for 2022 and 2023
    2022 Rivian R1T
The 2022 Rivian R1T charges onto the market as the first mainstream electric pickup truck(皮卡货车), and it makes a strong impression. The R1T is equal parts workhorse and adventure vehicle, though its electrified powertrain(电动动力系统) needs to be further enhanced. Still, it’s the first of many electric pickups to come.
    2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
The electrification of America’s best-selling pickup truck is a tall order, but it’s a job that the Ford F-150 Lightning has pulled of T wonderfully. The Lightning is powerful, efficient and capable. Apart from range limitations when towing (拖车), the F-150 Lightning is every bit the workhorse that full-size pickup truck buyers have come to expect.
    2022 Jeep Gladiato
The 2022 Jeep Gladiator is an honest-to-goodness(真正的) pick truck. It’s skilled at towing and pulling, it’s exceptionally capable in off-road driving, and its inner part is roomy and built to last. The trade-off(权衡) is that the Gladiator isn’t as comfortable, quiet or well-equipped as others.
    2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup
The all-new 2023 GMC Hummer EV is designed to offer truck buyers a chance to replace their gas-powered pickups with battery-powered ones, and it’s a role that the Hummer EV should perform convincingly. It rides, handles, and speeds up better than just about any traditional full-size pickup on the market. However, that capability doesn’t come cheap, but overall, the new Hummer gets a lot of public attention in the small but growing electric truck market.
1、Which of the following may perform best in the wild?
    A. 2022 Rivian R1T. B. 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.
    C. 2022 Jeep Gladiator. D. 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup.
2、What might the Hummer EV impress buyers most?
    A. Its power system. B. Its traditional role.
    C. Its future market. D. Its driving experience.
3、What do the four kinds of trucks have in common?
    A. They are electric pickups. B. They are expensive.
    C. They have large inner space. D. They have disadvantages.
I have lived in rural America for nine years, first in Michigan, where I got my PhD; then in central Illinois and now in Indiana, where I am a professor. In a place where most people have lived the whole of their lives, I feel like a stranger. There are few things I enjoy more than complaining about my geographic isolation. I’m a vegetarian, so there’s nowhere to go for a nice dinner that isn’t 50 miles away. I’m black, so there’s nowhere to get my hair done that doesn’t involve another 50-mile drive. And the closest major airport is two hours away.
I recite these gripes(抱怨) to my friends. We all have grand ideas about what life would be like if only we did that, or lived there. And there’s this; I really don’t intend to change most of the things I complain about. Griping is seductive on those days when happiness requires too much energy. But it also makes me lose sight of the fact that I was born and grew up in Nebraska and have lived most of my life in one of the plains states. When I go to the coasts, I am struck by how unappealing big-city living can be.
While I may not love where I live, there are plenty of people who are proud to call this place home. At a party with colleagues, I was going on about everything I couldn’t stand in our town when I noticed that they were silent and shifting uncomfortably. That moment forced a change in me. Complaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect life. By focusing on gripes, I risk missing out on precious moments of appreciation. When I get home, I stand on my balcony, look into the night sky and see the stars. I know that I have absolutely nothing to complain about.
    4、What causes the author’s loneliness?
    A. Dietary habits. B. Racial prejudice.
    C. Educational differences. D. Identity confusion.
5、What does the underlined word “seductive” mean in paragraph 3?
    A. Attractive. B. Temporary. C. Violent. D. Flexible.
6、How might the author feel about himself when the atmosphere changed at a party?
    A. Humbled. B. Angry. C. Touched. D. Calm.
7、What does the author realize in the end?
    A. Every day is beautiful. B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
    C. Human must value lives themselves. D. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.
For years, David James, who studies insects at Washington State University, had wanted to examine the migration(迁徙) patterns of West Coast monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarchs tagged(打标签) by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely. Knowing the route is vital to conservation efforts, but James had no way to figure it out—until he got a phone call from Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
The prison was looking for new activities to improve the mental health of those serving long-term sentences. So James began working with prisoners to raise monarchs through the whole process of their transformation. The adult insects were then tagged and released from the prison. Over five years, nearly 10,000 monarchs flew from the facility. Elsewhere in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, researchers released another few thousand.
The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay.
The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. “They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies,” James says. Watching the monarch change their form also touched the men. “This butterfly changed,” James recalls prisoners telling him, “and maybe we can too.”
8、What was hard for David to do in his study?
    A. Gain financial support. B.Hire qualified workers.
    C. Build a new laboratory. D.Find enough monarchs.
9、Why are the butterflies tagged before being released?
    A. To guarantee their safety. B.To enable them to fly longer distances.
    C. To track their travel routes. D.To distinguish them from other species.
10、What makes the prisoners feel that they can change?
    A. The patience the butterflies showed.
    B. The hardship the butterflies underwent.
    C. The transformation of the butterflies.
    D. The devotion of James to the butterflies.
11、What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The impact of the research. B. The findings of James' study.
    C. The release of the prisoners. D. The life cycle of the butterflies.
The earth has many mysteries for people to explore and we live on the earth for protection. Did you know that the earth has two North Poles? There’s the geographic North Pole, which never changes. And there’s the magnetic North Pole, which is always on the move. Over the past 150 years, the magnetic North Pole has casually wandered 685 miles across northern Canada. But right now it’s racing 25 miles a year to the northwest. This could be a sign that we’re about to experience something humans have never seen before: a magnetic polar flip. And when this happens, it could affect much more than just your compass.
Right now on the surface of the planet; it looks like it’s just a bar magnet. Our compasses are just pointing to one pole at a time because there’s mainly a two-pole system. But sometimes, the earth doesn’t just have a single magnetic North and South Pole. Evidence suggests that, for hundreds to thousands of years at a time, our planet has had four, six, and even eight poles. This is what has happened when the magnetic poles flipped in the past. And when it happens again, it won’t be good news for humans.
Now you might think, eight poles must be better than two. But the reality is that multiple magnetic fields would fight each other. This could weaken the earth’s protective magnetic field by up to 90% during a polar flip.
The earth’s magnetic field is what protects us from harmful space radiation which can damage cells and cause cancer. With a weaker field in place, some scientists think this could expose planes to higher levels of radiation, making flights less safe.
This could also disrupt the internal sense of direction in many animals that use the magnetic field for navigation. Even worse, it could make certain places on the planet too dangerous to live in. But what exactly will take place on the surface is less clear than what will undoubtedly happen in space.
Satellites and space missions will need extra shelter that we’ll have to provide ourselves. Without it, intense universal and solar radiation will fry circuit boards and increase the risk of cancer in astronauts.
12、Which of the following can best describe the earth’s magnetic field?
    A. The protective umbrella of humans. B. The navigation of satellites.
    C. The center of the universe. D. The focus of scientific research.
13、What will some animals be faced with when the magnetic poles flip?
    A. Being unable to find directions exactly. B. Bearing very loud noise day and night.
    C. Losing the ability to hunt for food. D. Being unable to protect themselves from danger.
14、What can we learn from the text?
    A. Astronauts are more likely to suffer from cancer.
    B. The magnetic North Pole is moving faster than before.
    C. There are always more than two magnetic poles on the earth at a time.
    D. Flights aren’t allowed to travel as usual when the magnetic poles flip.
15、What may be the best title for the text?
    A. How and when will the poles flip?
    B. The reasons why scientists research poles
    C. What will happen when the poles flip?
    D. The ways that scientists research poles
16、 It’s always exciting to begin a new job. But among the frenzy(激动) of meeting new colleagues, starting new projects, and building new skills, there can be a stressful pressure to succeed. A big part of your success is determined by how quickly you are able to digest lots of information, which can be very hard. ①_____
    * Manage yourself When you notice information overload, don't ignore it and don't panic. Say to yourself, "I'm in a new job and there is plenty to learn here. It's okay to feel this way." ②_____. Remember that emotions can help you better understand yourself and your values.
    * Sort your information
③_____. It keeps what it needs more immediately in our short-term memory, and it mixes together information we may need to use in the future to store in our long-term memory. For the information that's not needed, our brain acts like a garbage management, recycling, and deleting it.
    * ④_____
Organizations often have digital knowledge management systems to store and take important information. You can do the same to reduce brain burden. I recommend creating a Word or Google document in which you write down information that your brain doesn't need to remember or store.
    * Reduce task-switching
Multi-tasking isn't good for you physically or mentally and is worse for your productivity and cognition(认知). ⑤_____ You can go for longer than that, but be sure to take a break. Focused activity is less taxing than multitasking, but you can't keep working endlessly
    A. Respond positively
    B. Use technology to help
    C. That problem is much easier to understand and solve
    D. Here are some methods to deal with the information overload

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. "You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living," my mom suggested brightly. "I'm sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs."
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old.

By focusing on gripes, I risk missing out on precious moments of appreciation.(在一次与同事的聚会上,我正滔滔不绝地谈论着镇上所有我无法忍受的事情,这时我注意到他们都沉默不语,不安地移动着身子。
Complaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect life. By focusing on gripes, I risk missing out on precious moments of appreciation. When I get home, I stand on my balcony, look into the night sky and see the stars. I know that I have absolutely nothing to complain about.(抱怨可能会让你放松,但接受也一样。
The route the butterflies travel has been hardly known because the populations are too small to follow. For every 200 monarchs tagged(打标签) by a researcher, only one is usually recovered at the end of its trip, James says, and finding even 200 in the wild to tag is unlikely.(蝴蝶的迁徙路线几乎不为人所知,因为它们的数量太少,无法追踪。
The tags included email addresses, and soon after the first butterflies took off, James started receiving messages from people who had spotted them. The butterflies, the reports confirmed, wintered in coastal California. Twelve of them landed at Lighthouse Field State Beach in Santa Cruz. Several more headed to Bolinas and Morro Bay.(这些标签包括电子邮件地址,在第一只蝴蝶起飞后不久,詹姆斯就开始收到发现它们的人发来的信息。
It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners. "They were very worried that they were going to harm the butterflies," James says. Watching the monarch change their form also touched the men. "This butterfly changed," James recalls prisoners telling him, "and maybe we can too."(这也显示了一些囚犯较为温和的一面。"他们非常担心自己会伤害蝴蝶,"詹姆斯说。看着黑脉金斑蝶改变自己的形式也让男人们很感动。"这只蝴蝶变了,"詹姆斯回忆说, "也许我们也可以。")可知,蝴蝶的改变感动了这些囚犯,他们觉得蝴蝶可以改变形式,他们也可以做出改变,由此可知,是蝴蝶的蜕变让囚犯感觉他们也可以改变。故选C。
    11、答案:A
The work helps researchers identify ideal places to plant milkweed and other vegetation that are important to the life cycle of West Coast monarch butterflies. It also brought out the gentler side of some of the prisoners.(这项工作有助于研究人员确定种植马利筋和其他植物的理想地点,这些植物对西海岸黑脉金斑蝶的生命周期很重要。 故选A。

When you notice information overload, don't ignore it and don't panic. Say to yourself, "I'm in a new job and there is plenty to learn here. It's okay to feel this way."(当你注意到信息过载时,不要忽视它,也不要惊慌。 Say to yourself, I'm in a new job and there is plenty to learn here. It's okay to feel this way";下文Remember that emotions can help you better understand yourself and your values.(记住,情绪可以帮助你更好地了解自己和自己的价值观。)
It keeps what it needs more immediately in our short-term memory, and it mixes together information we may need to use in the future to store in our long-term memory.(它把我们需要的即时信息保存在我们的短期记忆中,并把我们将来可能需要的信息混合在一起,存储在我们的长期记忆中。) For the information that's not needed, our brain acts like a garbage management, recycling, and deleting it.(对于不需要的信息,我们的大脑就像垃圾管理系统一样,回收并删除它们。)
Organizations often have digital knowledge management systems to store and take important information. You can do the same to reduce brain burden. I recommend creating a Word or Google document in which you write down information that your brain doesn't need to remember or store.(组织通常拥有数字知识管理系统来存储和获取重要信息。
Multi-tasking isn't good for you physically or mentally and is worse for your productivity and cognition(认知).(同时处理多项任务对你的身体和精神都没有好处,对你的工作效率和认知能力也更差。) You can go for longer than that, but be sure to take a break. Focused activity is less taxing than multitasking, but you can't keep working endlessly.(你可以坚持更长时间,但一定要休息一下。

As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano? I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, "This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous." Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I' m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
    ①表演:perform /show
    ②宣布:announce /declare
    ①尴尬:embarrassment /awkward
②紧张的:nervous /intense/ be on pins and needles
