Slwly, attendance rse t 100 students. It wasn’t an easy victry.”
Hwever, this prmising perid was shrt-lived, as Sangeeta sn discvered that traditinal teaching methds seemed ineffective. “The children didn’t want t just sit and listen,” she recalls. “They brightened up when I tld stries, sang sngs, r played games with them.” Thus, she began using flk tales, riddles, and interactive activities t make learning enjyable. Fr decades “Mnday blues” has been a term fr the cllective gran (叹息) that greets the start f each wrkweek. Mndays cme with higher rates f anxiety, stress and even suicide cmpared with ther days.

Furthermre, culd the fleeting changes in md leave a mark n peple’s bdy even after they stp wrking? T answer these questins, Prfessr Tarani Chandla frm HKU, lked int the phenmenn, fcusing n the stress hrmne crtisl (皮质醇).
When we experience a stressr, the brain activates the release f crtisl, which helps us t manage shrt-term stress. But cnstant high levels f crtisl disturb the brain and bdily systems, increasing the risk f anxiety, depressin, heart disease, diabetes and besity.
Chandla studied 3,511 participants aged 50 and lder in England, and the results were striking. Older adults wh reprted feeling anxius n Mndays had, n average, 23 percent higher levels f crtisl up t tw mnths later, cmpared with thse wh felt anxius n ther days. And the effect was nt limited t thse still wrking; retirees wh felt anxius n Mndays als shwed higher crtisl.
Why might Mndays, in particular, have a pwerful effect n the bdy? One pssibility is that the shift frm the weekend t the high demands f the week is essentially stressful. Als, sme peple becme anxius n Mndays s rutinely that it becmes an autmatic bdily respnse.
Fr sme peple, Mnday blues are cnstant stressrs. Hspitals may need t plan fr the increased risk f heart attacks and ther health events n Mndays, especially amng lder adults. In additin, internatinal practices like meditatin, mindfulness, regular physical activity r gd sleep might help peple adapt t the start f the week and have lng-term health benefits. Finally, researchers will need t investigate why sme peple are resilient (适应力强) t Mnday anxiety while thers are nt. That questin might pen the dr t interventins that help peple start the week nt just with a gran but with greater resilience.

Scientists at MIT have managed t change rdinary spinach (菠菜) plants int natural sensrs which can find chemicals used in bmbs. The secret t giving spinach these special pwers is nantech (纳米技术), which is a scientific area that deals with making r changing things that are extremely tiny.

If we tap int this pint, there is a wealth f infrmatin t access.” That’s what the scientists use t pwer their tiny experiments.
Fr this experiment, the scientists placed tw different kinds f tiny nan-materials int spinach plants. T embed (植入) them int the plants, the scientists put a liquid cntaining them n the bttm f the plant’s leaves. As part f its natural prcess, the spinach plant pulls water thrugh its rts and int its leaves. If the water cntains certain chemicals used in bmbs, the tiny sensrs in the leaves make the nan-tubes, which, alng with the sensrs, were placed int the spinach plant befre by the scientists, prduce a slightly special kind f light. By watching the plant cnstantly using a camera attached t a cmputer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals frm explsives are fund in the water.
The cmputer the scientists used is abut the size f a playing card. They say that in the future, their system culd even use a cell phne with its camera changed slightly. Discvering chemicals used in bmbs is just ne f the many uses the researchers are explring. They have used such plants t discver several ther dangerus chemicals as well. Frm their pint f view, there’s n dubt that in the future, such systems culd give farmers specific infrmatin abut the health f the land and water n their farms.

A. Fixing the tiny sensrs.B. Cntaining the liquid.
C. Cntrlling the camera.D. Giving ff plant light.
14. What can yu infer abut the system frm the last paragraph?
A. Researchers are cnfident in its agricultural ptential.
B. Future success depends n specialized phne cameras.
C. Farmers have received farm-specific envirnmental data.
D. The cmputer can be sized accrding t scientists’ needs.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Spinach can Grw Healthily via Nantech.
B. Spinach Is Sensitive t Chemicals in Bmbs.
C. Nantech Turns Spinach int a Chemical Sensr.
