Nature Detectives: New Medicines frm Ancient Wisdm
What is Ethnpharmaclgy?
Ethnpharmaclgists (民族药理学) are nature detectives wh bridge tw different ways f knwing the wrld. Western science, based n cntrlled experiments, starts with a clear hypthesis (假设) and tests it step by step. Traditinal knwledge, n the ther hand, passes dwn nature-based wisdm thrugh stries and elder’ teachings ver hundreds f years.
As the figure shws, cmbining these tw systems gives us a fuller picture. The dts stand fr clues abut nature, and the lines are hw we cnnect them. Western science defines dts clearly but leaves many ut; traditinal knwledge cnnects dts smthly but struggles t define single nes. Tgether, they unlck new pssibilities fr medicine.
Instead f testing thusands f cstly, risky man-made chemicals, ethnpharmaclgists fcus n treatments prven safe ver centuries. Nearly half f mdern medicines cme frm nature, yet mst f the wrld’s 39,000 medicinal plants remain unstudied.
A Remarkable Success Stry
In the 1960s, malaria spread rapidly wrldwide, and existing drugs failed t develp resistance. Scientists tested cuntless man-made chemicals but fund n effective slutin. Chinese scientist Tu Yuyu adpted the ethnpharmaclgical apprach: she drew n 2,000 years f traditinal Chinese medical knwledge t identify Artemisia annua (青蒿), and then used mdern lab techniques t extract its key medicinal cmpnent, artemisinin. This perfect cmbinatin f ancient wisdm and mdern science created the glbal standard malaria treatment, saving millins f lives.
The True Spirit f Ethnpharmaclgy
The artemisinin stry perfectly illustrates the pwer f ethnpharmaclgy. It is nt just abut finding new chemicals in plants; it is abut respecting and valuing the wisdm passed dwn thrugh generatins. By bringing tgether different ways f understanding the wrld, ethnpharmaclgy builds a bridge between the past and the present, creating life-saving medicines fr peple everywhere.
21. What des the figure illustrate?
A. Traditinal way has clear dts.B. Neither apprach leaves dts ut.
C. Bth ways have shrtage.D. Western way cnnects dts smthly.
22. Hw did Tu Yuyu slve the malaria crisis?
A. By saving millins f lives.B. By testing man-made chemicals.
C. By using mdern lab techniques.D. By cmbining tw knwing systems.
23. What is ethnpharmaclgy’s cre spirit?
A. Saving millins f lives.B. Respecting traditinal wisdm.
C. Finding new plant chemicals.D. Using mdern lab techniques.

As a child I was addicted t bks until my eyes were blurred (模糊的). But in recent years, I’ve watched that capacity fr intense cncentratin disslve int endless scrlling n my phne. Reading fr pleasure feels less like nutrient and mre like endurance training. I wanted t restre that mental elasticity (弹性), t suspend the brain shrink.
S, abut a year ag, I made up my mind: every time I came acrss a wrd I didn’t knw – whether in a nvel, an article, r an verheard cnversatin – I wuld lk it up and write it dwn. Just a running list kept, irnically, n my phne. Each week, I’d spend a few minutes reading the list back in an attempt t put the wrd int my memry.
The list nw spans almst 20 pages, and this tiny habit has been quietly transfrmative. The payff is less abut peaccking with little-knwn adjectives – which, let’s face it, can make yu sund insufferable – and mre abut the mental training f the rutine. Each time I lk up and recrd a wrd, I feel a faint stretch, as thugh sme ignred part f my brain is flexing again.
Realistically, I absrb maybe 5% f these wrds int my everyday speech. “Incrrigible” made the cut. “Lugubrius” t. But mst f them remain like museum pieces–admired and listed but rarely handled. Even if I never use “eidln” in cnversatin, the very act f nticing, recrding and revising it interrupts the slide int passive, semi-skimmed attentin. I find myself reaching less ften fr the same tired handful f adjectives, and mre ften fr smething precise and muscular. Few things are mre satisfying than digging the exact wrd yu were searching fr – like finding the missing puzzle piece that lcks the picture int place.
In an era when ur devices siphn ff ur attentin with pitiless efficiency, it feels innvative t use mine as a tl fr slw thinking. And it has given me back smething I feared I’d lst – the pleasure f exercising a mind that, after years f lse scrlling, is finally waking up again.
24. What led t the authr’s lss f deep cncentratin?
A. The decrease f reading.B. Lack f nutritius bks.
C. Cnstant use f a smartphne.D. T much endurance training.
25. Why des the authr keep the wrd list?

26. What makes the authr satisfied?
A. Using accurate wrds.B. Imprving the attentin.
C. Lsing the puzzle piece.D. Mastering uncmmn wrds.
27. What des the underlined expressin “siphn ff” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Call ff. B. Draw ff. C. Bst up. D. Wind up.

Biluminescence, nature’s wn light prduced thrugh chemical reactins in living cells, is best knwn fr its dramatic displays in the deep cean, where rughly 90 percent f marine creatures can glw (发光) t cmmunicate, attract fd, r escape frm enemies. Yet this phenmenn is nt limited t the darkest depths. The sft cld blue light frm biluminescent algae (发光的藻类) like P. lunula ccasinally lights up the cean waves at night, thugh it nrmally fades in just an instant when disturbed.
What if we culd use this natural light and make it last lnger? That ambitius questin drives researchers at the University f Clrad Bulder, aiming t replace electricity-pwered lighting with living rganisms. Unlike traditinal artificial glws that rely n dangerus chemicals and cnsume fssil-fueled electricity, biluminescent algae ffer a harmless, carbn-negative alternative.
Led by civil engineer Wil Srubar, the team cnducted carefully cntrlled labratry experiments t investigate hw P. lunula respnds t different chemical envirnments. They tested acidic slutins and basic slutins (碱性溶液), discvering bth culd cause sustained light far lnger than their natural flashes. Acidic expsure prduced bright light lasting up t 25 minutes, while basic cnditins created a sfter and less cncentrated glw.
“This is the first time we’ve figured ut hw t keep algae glwing cntinuusly fr weeks,” said c-authr Giulia Brachi. The researchers went further, placing the algae int naturally surced, 3D-printed hydrgel (水凝胶) structures f varius shapes. Remarkably, the cmbinatin f the hydrgel envirnment and harmless chemicals allwed the algae t survive and glw steadily fr weeks. After fur weeks, the acid-treated samples in hydrgel still maintained 75 percent f their riginal brightness.
The ptential applicatins are far-reaching. These living lights culd pwer autnmus rbts and space explratin equipment withut batteries. They might als serve as water quality sensrs, changing their glw in respnse t harmful pllutants. Mst critically, these algae absrb carbn dixide while prducing light, which helps t reduce the net emissins cmpared t cnventinal lighting. As Srubar nted, “This discvery paves the way fr creating a new generatin f sustainable living materials and devices.”
28. What d we knw abut P. lunula?
A. It flashes when disturbed. B. It inhabits the deep cean.
C. It brightens sea waves at times.D. It generates bright blue light.
29. Fr what purpse did the researchers cnduct the experiments?
A. T test varius chemical slutins.B. T develp bilgical light surces.
C. T reduce carbn dixide emissins.D. T prduce biluminescent blue light.
30. What d the experiments indicate?
A. Acid glws last fur weeks.B. Base glws fade far faster.
C. 3D prints create lng glws.D. Tw factrs make lng glws.
31. Which might be the best title fr the text?
A. Living Lights Reshape Future Lighting
B. Hydrgel Imprves Algae-Based Lighting
C. Glwing Algae Offers Ec-friendly Lighting
D. Chemicals Help Algae Prduce Steady Glw

My name is Caisujia, and I wrk at the Snam Dargye Prtectin Statin deep in the Hh Xil Natinal Nature Reserve, 4,470 meters abve sea level. The “children” I lk after are nt human kids — they are baby Tibetan antelpes, rescued frm injuries, accidents, r separatin frm their mthers during the lng migratin.
Every year frm May t July, pregnant female antelpes travel hundreds f kilmeters t give birth near Znag Lake. On their way back, sme calves (幼崽) fall behind and get separated frm the herd. Our statin has 13 caretakers, and saving these fragile lives is what we d. This year, we rescued eight calves . Amng them, ne was my special respnsibility. We named him Nrbu — “treasure” in Tibetan — because he arrived s weak that we feared he might nt survive.
I will never frget thse early days. Every mrning, I prepared Nrbu’s milk with the same care a parent gives their wn baby. Each bttle had t be disinfected (消毒) with ht water and carefully dried. Befre feeding him, I wuld squeeze a few drps nt the back f my hand t test the temperature — t ht wuld burn him, t cld might make him sick. Day by day, Nrbu grew strnger. As he grew lder, we began taking him ut n the grassland fr shrt perids, letting him learn t sense the wind fr danger. He learned t recgnize my ftsteps. When I apprached his pen, he wuld lift his head and gaze at me with thse gentle, dark eyes. On cld nights, I wuld check n him befre ging t bed, making sure he was warm and safe. Over the mnths, a bnd frmed between us — smething beynd caretaker and animal, smething clser t family.
But accrding t the rules f ur statin, rescued antelpes must be released back int the wild nce they turn tw years ld. They belng t Hh Xil, nt t us. I knew this. I had always knwn this. Yet as Nrbu’s secnd birthday drew near, a quiet ache grew inside my heart. Every mrning when I lked at him, the thught f separatin wuld wash ver me like the cld wind acrss the plateau.
