I must admit I did nt buy 40 bks this year. At a nearby bkshp I paid fr a membership card that allws me t brrw tw r three bks at a time and keep them fr a mnth.
Owning a bk has its advantages, such as allwing yu t make ntes t yur heart’s cntent, and yu can reread it anytime yu want, but brrwing hlds advantages, t. One cnsideratin is space, and in my city where a ft f land is wrth an inch f gld, this issue speaks vlumes when it cmes t wning bks.
Yu want t reread a bk, but just lk at hw many bks there are n yur bkshelf that yu haven’t finished reading even nce. Peple tend t finish bks they brrw mre quickly than the nes they wn, mainly because f the pressure f a deadline. Several times during the year I stayed up late t finish a bk the night befre the due date. I finished abut 10 mre bks that way.
It is increasingly difficult t chse a gd bk because there are simply s many ut there. Even if yu chse nly frm a narrw area f interest, singling ut 40 is challenging. Bk reviews and the cmments readers leave n the websites f nline bkstres can be helpful in this regard.
But yu cannt judge a bk by its review. What I d is try t find and brrw the bk frm the bkshp. Sme are like fast fd: yu leaf thrugh the pages and finish them in a flash. Sme are strng in certain chapters but weak in thers. Sme have titles that scream at yu but lack substance.
I cut my lsses by perusing (精读) n the spt r brrwing. Of the 40 I read frm cver t cver, I bught fur I thught were wrth keeping. Strangely, I had nt really set ut t read thse fur bks but happened upn them in the bkshp. That unpredictability is ne f the exciting parts f this reading adventure.

Nw, children wh are recvering frm a lng-term illnesses in the hspital r at hme may have a high-tech friend t help feel less lnely. And that friend is a rbt called AV1. AV1 ges t schl fr a child wh is hmebund while recvering frm a lng-term illness. And the child’s schl friends must help. They carry the rbt between classes and place the rbt n the child’s desk.

This smth interactin helps the child keep up with lessns, jin grup discussins freely and even share small jys with peers in class. It well narrws the distance between their recvery place and schl, letting them stay clsely linked t campus life instead f being left ut alne.

A small camera cnnected t a small cmputer culd d the jb. But that wuld nt be the same. AV1 is large and lks like a human fr a reasn. What des being “smart” mean? The 16th-century philspher Michel de Mntaigne argued that we made a big mistake in regarding bk learning r frmal schl educatin as surces f ur mst imprtant lessns. He famusly said that we can be knwledgeable with anther man’s knwledge but cannt be wise with anther man’s wisdm. And wisdm — which, t Michel de Mntaigne, meant living well — was the nly kind f “smart”. Wisdm, Michel de Mntaigne thught, was available t anyne wh was prepared and able t reflect well n their experiences.
Reflecting well means mre than just taking accunt f things that have made yu feel ne way r anther. It means understanding the mst basic elements t which they can be reduced. Hw wnderful t realise that yu were s happy when yu were in Vndelpark in Amsterdam, nt because yu were n hliday and hundreds f kilmetres frm hme, but because yu had been arund nature. A cnditin much easier t reprduce!
Wisdm takes a little bit mre, hwever, than an ability t reflect well. It requires being able t adjust yur life t make the best use f self-knwledge, which, in turn, can take discipline. Wisdm has a lt t d with understanding the eventual gains we can harvest frm shrt-term deprivatins (匮乏) and incnveniences. One f the best lessns I’ve learnt this year is that denying my urge t check smething nline has led t myself being freed frm the virtual wrld’s tight cntrl.
What des a smart persn lk like? I used t think it was smene yu find in cafes with a cmplicated-sunding bk in frnt f them. I tend, these days, t agree with Michel de Mntaigne that the mst certain sign f wisdm is cheerfulness. Smehw my current image f “smart” is able t include smene wh ften walks int ples r trips ver their wn feet, s lng as they knw hw t smile abut it.
51.Which idea might Michel de Mntaigne have criticised?
A.We cannt learn thers’ wisdm.
B.Knwledge can be shared between individuals.
C.Schls are the mst imprtant places fr study.
D.We may nt becme smart thrugh frmal educatin.
52.What des the authr try t tell the readers by mentining Vndelpark?
A.Less is mre.
B.Life is nly a jurney.
C.Nature is ur best teacher.
D.Travelling makes us happy.
53.What des the authr say abut wisdm in Para. 3?
A.It requires little self-discipline.
B.It equals the ability t reflect well.
C.It is abut adjusting ne’s life t acquire knwledge.
D.It is abut keeping a balance between gains and lsses.
54.What des the authr talk abut in the last paragraph?
A.Mntaigne’s cnceptin f wisdm.
B.Different appraches t wisdm.
C.His image f a smart persn.
D.Definitin f being cheerful.
55.What wuld be the best title f the passage?
A.The Imprtance f Bk Learning
B.Wisdm: The Perceptin f “Smart”
C.The Reflectins n Life in Vndelpark
D.Michel de Mntaigne: A Great Philspher

In the early 2010s, I was sent t live in rural Flrida. One day, I received a bwl full f wild turkey eggs frm a tractr driver. I had t act fast, buying an incubatr (孵化器) at shrt ntice and turning the eggs twice a day, as a turkey hen wuld. I wuld regularly “talk” t them, recreating the sunds a wild turkey wuld make n its nest, in rder t get the eggs accustmed t my vice. A week r s int the experiment, I started t hear respnses frm them and the first tiny beak (喙) brke thrugh. Sn, I had a new family f 16 wild turkeys.
I built a large pen (围栏) t prtect these lvely birds, cmplete with upright branches fr them t rest n; at a week and a half ld, they culd already fly. During the day we explred the surrunding cuntryside. While living with the turkeys, I discvered their cmmunicatin was far subtler than I’d realised. Fr example, we encuntered many snakes as we explred and I was sn able t discern the different sunds they made. I als identified varius sunds f snakes. After six mnths, I had a gd ear fr different sunds, thugh ccasinally I’d miscall and get a very different reactin frm the ne I’d expected.
The prject lasted tw years. The turkeys grew fast, but my separatin frm them began when they started rsting in trees utside their pen, where I culd nt fllw. I felt a sense f relief at having kept them alive lng enugh t becme independent. In the end, I reached the cnclusin that turkeys were clever birds.
