When turning ur minds t self - imprvement, we assume that we need t put pleasure n pause until we reach ur gals, fllwing sayings like "n pain, n gain". If we fail, we blame ur lack f willpwer and ur chice t give int shrt - term temptatin (诱惑) at the cst f lng - term benefits. Yet the latest research shws this is the wrng apprach.
Immediate pleasure and satisfactin in the prcess, rather than delayed rewards, are what drive us t keep ging. Pleasure des nt ruin self - cntrl; instead, it supprts ur perseverance. Frget delayed gratificatin (满足); it's instant gratificatin that keeps us ging.
These insights cme frm self - determinatin thery, which classifies mtivatin int intrinsic drives — things we d fr fun, engagement r pleasure — and extrinsic drives — things we d fr lng - term benefits. A study surveyed peple n their New Year's gals, rating intrinsic drives (pleasure, engagement) and extrinsic drives (lng - term usefulness, imprtance), then tracking their prgress fr a year. The results shwed intrinsic drive was the best predictr f perseverance, while extrinsic mtivatin had n effect; a gal's abstract wrth mattered little if its prcess wasn't immediately rewarding. Sadly, mst participants mistakenly believed fcusing n extrinsic value ver pleasure wuld bst perseverance, a dmed strategy.
Intrinsic and extrinsic drives d nt have t be at dds, f curse. They can cexist: yu
might start exercising n a dctr's advice but switch t enjyable activities like ice skating instead f bring runs, burning calries while feeling fulfilled rather than sacrificing.
Researchers warn against chsing activities nly fr quick results — dieters maintain weight lss better with delicius healthy meals than bland lw - calrie sups. Fr less fun habits, behaviural scientist's "temptatin bundling" helps: cmbining the habit with immediate gratificatin, like students listening t audi bks while wrking ut. Similarly, studying in a favrite cafe turns hmewrk int a treat, bsting cnsistency by adding intrinsic drive t extrinsic gals.
28. What is the cmmn excuse fr self - blame?
A. Lacking willpwer.B. Rejecting shrt fun.C. Having vague gals.D. Fearing big challenges.
29. What is the new discvery accrding t the text?

B. Delayed rewards play a significant rle in success.
C. Self - imprvement has nthing t d with pleasure.
D. Willpwer has lng - term benefits fr human beings.
30. What des the underlined phrase "at dds" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. In cmmn.B. Of significance.C. Of cncern.D. In cnflict.
31. What can be regarded as an intrinsic drive?
A. Lng - term usefulness.B. Engagement in an activity.
C. Abstract wrth f an event.D. The prcess f frming habits.
D
Daily behavirs are largely autmatic, with an estimated 65 percent perfrmed n "autpilt," meaning that we d them withut thinking. These autmatic behaviurs can be helpful, like washing ur hands, r unhelpful, like biting ur nails. Since s many f ur day - t - day actins are habitual, understanding hw habits frm and hw we can change them is essential fr imprving health and prductivity.
Studying habits isn't easy. Because habitual behaviurs happen autmatically, we can't always see r measure them directly. Humans can verride habits when making a cnscius effrt. Fr example, we can avid ur habitual pst - dinner chclate bar if we are truly mtivated t, but if we aren't thinking abut it, chances are the wrapper will be empty befre we've even nticed. While labratry studies ffer cntrl, they ften lack realism, and real - wrld studies, thugh realistic, are difficult t cntrl due t cuntless uncntrlled variables.
That's where virtual reality (VR) cmes in. VR is a cmputer - generated simulatin (模
拟)that can allw fr realistic interactin with a perceived 3D envirnment. At the University f Surrey, researchers are develping new methdlgies in the VR lab, where habits are created in a way similar t hw peple act in the real wrld. Participants wear a VR headset and act as hspital wrkers preparing rms fr patients. They must fllw a specific rder f tasks — fr example, making the bed, then emptying the bin. By repeating this sequence many times, they start t frm habits.
The strength f the frmed habits is then tested thrugh multiple methds. These include self - reprts, cmputer - based tasks, and intentinal changes within the VR envirnment. Fr instance, participants might be asked t perfrm the tasks in a new rder r while cmpleting a cmpeting mental task. If they uncnsciusly revert t the ld sequence r perfrm mre slwly, it indicates the habit's strength. VR allws researchers t precisely track actins, speeds, and respnses t such changes.
Measuring habits using VR culd help answer many f the big questins: What's the best way t add a new habit t an existing rutine? Hw d rewards affect habit frmatin? And hw can we replace bad habits with better nes? By using VR, we hpe t unlck new insights int hw t make and break habits — a key t prmting psitive behaviur change.
32. What purpse des the first paragraph serve?
A. T define the key factrs f the study.
B. T help the readers brainstrm n the tpic.
C. T explain the cause f sme phenmenn.
D. T emphasize the significance f the study.
33. What sets back measuring habits in labs?
A. Cnscius effrts.B. Uncntrlled variables.
C. A lack f realistic simulatins.D. True mtivatin behind a behavir.
34. Hw is VR emplyed in the research?
A. VR headsets send signals t participants.
B. VR prvides access t behaviral details.
C. VR trains participants t wrk in hspitals.
D. VR ensures the sequence f perfrmed tasks.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Labratry Studies vs Real - wrld Research
B. Virtual Reality: A New Way T Study Habits
C. Ways t Frm Gd Habits and Break Bad Ones
D. Habits: Autmatic Behaviurs T Influence Life

39 Experts suggest "active rest". This invlves stepping away frm screens and engaging in lw - energy activities that still require sme mvement, such as gentle stretching, listening t an audibk while walking arund the blck, r cking a simple meal. 40 As ne therapist wisely nted, "Yur bed shuld be yur sanctuary fr sleep, nt yur prisn fr hiding frm the wrld."

As a clueless freshwman, I waltzed int my first creative writing curse by accident, thinking it was a literature class n hw t read shrt stries, nt hw t write them.
The number f students in the rm surprised me. I'd never seen a humanities class s crwded. Every seat arund the table was taken, s I jined the flks standing with their backs pressed t the walls, wh quickly infrmed me that the rster (名单) was full, and s was the waitlist. What, I wndered, was ging n?
When the instructr walked in and intrduced the curse, I realized my mistake. The curse wuldn't cunt tward my majr, Cmparative Literature. Since I was already there, hwever, I decided t see what all the fuss (追捧) was abut. I can n lnger recall hw the class unflded that day, but what I d remember is my unexplainable reslve that I had t be a part f it. Perhaps, as a lifelng reader, I tried t understand hw stries wrked their magic; perhaps the buzzing energy in the rm had gne t my head.
But taking the class wuld be impssible: I wasn't even n the waitlist. That's when the instructr asked fr a vlunteer t submit the first wrkshp stry.
Silence blanketed the rm. N ne risked eye cntact. Whever vlunteered wuld have t write a whle stry in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written ne befre.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked the instructr, "If I g first, will yu give me a spt in the class?" He said he wuld. It suddenly hit me hw I'd gained admissin t university by setting gals and wrking t meet them with singular fcus. And yet there I was, diving int a class that wuldn't cunt tward my majr, simply because it had sparked my interest.
