16-year-ld Jared Lepra frm the UK has created a rbtic arm that imitates the natural mvements f a
human hand using nly ready-made Leg Mindstrms parts. He shwcased this inventin at the 2025 Internatinal
Cnference n Intelligent Rbts and Systems in Hangzhu, China.
The teenager c-authred research recently published alng with clleagues including his father Nathan
Lepra, a prfessr f rbtics and artificial intelligence at the University f Bristl. Jared used Leg Mindstrms,
a Leg rbtics kit, t build a Leg versin f SftHand-A, a 3D-printed rbt hand intrduced in an earlier study.
“My dad has always been wrking n rbtics. He designs rbtic systems with cmplicated mechanisms that
have lts f real-wrld applicatins,” Jared said. “My gal was t create an educatinal design which shws
prfessinal mechanisms in a simple educatinal way understandable by children.”
The design is a playful interpretatin f a serius line f rbtics research. It is based n the Pisa/IIT SftHand
mdel, a wrld-leading develpment in sft rbtics that uses a single tendn (肌腱) system t crdinate finger
mvements. Jared adapted this cncept fr educatinal purpses, replacing the 3D-printed parts and metal bearings
with standard cmpnents and ver 100 plastic Leg bearings. Despite its ty rigins, the Leg SftHand perfrms
remarkably well. Lab tests have shwn that it can grip bjects with abut 90% f the frce f a prfessinal
3D-printed SftHand, and perfrm pen-clse cycles in abut ne secnd.
Since the hand can be cnstructed frm Leg pieces and uses state-f-the-art design cncepts fr rbtic hands,
it has the ptential t educate and inspire children t learn abut the frntiers f mdern rbtics. “My generatin
and yunger are the future f rbtics, s it is essential that we understand and take interest in this field,” Jared says.
“Building a rbt hand with yur wn hands is a great way t learn abut rbtics.”
4. What can be learned abut Jared frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. He has an inquiring mind. B. He is keen n cutting-edge tech.
C. He is fnd f Leg bricks. D. He excels at hands-n prjects.
5. What is Jared’s design like?
A. Rare but mind-pening. B. User-friendly and infrmative.
C. Cmplicated but well-perated. D. Cst-effective and prfessinal.
6. What is the basis fr Jared’s design?
A. A nvel cncept f mvements.
B. Earlier research f Leg rbtics.
C. An advanced mdel in sft rbtics.
D. The availability f Leg cmpnents.
7. What message des the text mainly cnvey?
A. Like father, like sn. B. Hme is the first schl.
C. It’s never t late t learn. D. Think utside the Leg bx.

Hrrr fans have been painted with the same brad and bldy brush fr decades: labelled as cld, unfeeling
thrill-seekers wh delight in thers’ suffering. Film critics have described the fans and creatrs f films like Friday
the 13th and Saw as “very sick peple”. But I argue that these assumptins are all wrng.
The miscnceptins abut hrrr fans were seemingly supprted by evidence presented in an analysis frm
2007. But the analysis is nly as strng as the studies it summarizes. In this case, they had prly defined variables.
Fr example, the tw studies with the strngest assciatin with lw empathy examined participant enjyment f
trture and shrt clips that cncluded with cruel murders and n satisfactry reslutin. These measures prbably
wn’t tell yu much abut hrrr fans. The authrs f the analysis admitted deep in the discussin sectin that the
link between empathy and enjyment f hrrr disappeared when thse studies were remved.
In 2024, I published a set f studies that directly addressed the questin f hrrr fandm and empathy. The
results were striking. Using standardised assessments, hrrr fans scred higher n empathy and cmpassin.
When my clleagues and I examined the mtivatins f hrrr fans at frightening attractins, we fund that
“adrenaline junkies” represent nly ne subset. We als fund a grup we called “dark cpers”, wh use hrrr t
prcess difficult emtins. Anther grup, “white knucklers,” cnfrnt fear t learn abut themselves. The
three-type mdel reveals that many fans aren’t just mtivated by adrenaline (肾上腺素). But there is ne cmmn
trait amng them.
My research has identified mrbid curisity (猎奇) as the mst pwerful predictr f hrrr fandm. It is this
tendency t seek ut infrmatin abut threatening r death-related phenmena that drives a fascinatin with hrrr
media. Studies shw that peple with higher levels f this curisity demnstrate better preparedness fr real crises
and shw increased resilience during stressful life events.
The evidence paints a picture f hrrr fans being empathetic, curius and psychlgically cmplicated.
Hrrr is a prf t human adaptability and ur remarkable capacity t find meaning, cnnectin and even grwth
in the face f ur deepest fears.
8. What is a cnventinal wisdm abut hrrr fans?
A. They lack empathy. B. They tend t fall sick.
C. They desire cmfrt. D. They seek uniqueness.
9. What is the limitatin f previus studies?
A. They ignre the essence f humanity.
B. The variables’ definitin is indefinite.
C. They rely much n participants’ feelings.
D. The incmplete discussin is misleading.
10. Why is the three-type mdel mentined in paragraph 4?
A. T intrduce types f hrrr fans.
B. T shw mtivatins f hrrr fans.
C. T grup fans based n their emtins.
D. T cmpare different levels f curisity.
11. What is the authr’s attitude twards hrrrs?
A. He dubted them. B. He dismissed them.
C. He apprved f them. D. He brushed them aside.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. C

Facial expressins are central t scial life, yet scientists still dn’t fully understand hw the brain prduces
them. Fr decades, ne influential thery has held that what appears n yur face is largely an emtinal reflex —
an hnest, autmatic readut f what yu feel inside. But that view struggles t explain the fact that we ften tailr
ur expressins t the mment.
T find ut what’s ging n in the brain during facial expressins, researchers turned t mnkeys. They
recrded neural (神经的) activity while the animals interacted with ne anther in the lab. The team’s results
published in Science came as a surprise: the mnkeys’ expressins, frm a threatening face t a friendly
“lip-smacking”, were generated by bth the medial crtex (内侧皮层) and lateral crtex (外侧皮层). These tw
brain regins were lng thught t perate independently, but the study shwed that bth f them participated in
the prductin f all kinds f facial expressins.
The tw regins did, hwever, run at different speeds. Activity in the lateral crtex reriented quickly, t
crdinate the rapid facial mvements that make fr smth scial interactin. By cntrast, things happen at a mre
leisurely pace in the medial crtex, perhaps allwing it t track slw-changing cntextual factrs that influence
facial expressins. What’s mre, bth neural patterns shw up befre facial mvements d, suggesting the brain
prepares expressins in advance.
This all raises a questin: D mnkeys intentinally plan the faces they make? That’s the interpretatin
evlutinary psychlgists explre in the new study. If facial expressins are partly vluntary, they may be less
like emtinal mirrrs and mre like “tls fr scial influence”, as the researchers put it. At the very least, they
seem t arise frm cmplex interactins between emtin and cgnitin.
Alan Fridlund, a scial and evlutinary psychlgist wh was nt invlved in this study, has n truble
believing mnkeys hld their faces strategically. But he dubts that staged, lab-bund interactins can capture the
full reality f mnkeys’ cmmunicatins, r the neural activity underlying it; ideally, future research wuld take
place in the mnkeys’ natural envirnment. Still, Fridlund says, the new study “tells us in infinitely mre detail
hw we can investigate the neurlgy f facial displays.”
12. What des the study reveal abut the medial crtex and lateral crtex?
A. They recrd neural activities.
B. They perfrm different functins.
C. They cperate t create expressins.
D. They stimulate the cnveyance f emtins.
13. What des the underlined wrd “reriented” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Shifted. B. Decreased. C. Appeared. D. Expanded.
14. What is Alan Fridlund’s suggestin fr future research?
A. Cllecting specific data.
B. Experimenting in nature.
C. Detailing the bservatins.
D. Expanding research subjects.
15. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
A. What matters t scializatin?
B. Decde the signals f emtins
C. Facial expressins mirrr emtins
D. Are facial displays made intentinally?
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

emtinal grwth and integrity.
Finally, yu are knwn by the cmpany yu keep; this is always true. If yu are surrunded by happy and
