In December 2014, a spine (脊柱) cancer surgery saved my life and disabled me at the same time.

But later, I drew inspiratin frm an ld disabled man. I find myself cnsumed with the later years f Henri Matisse, an artist his friend Pabl Picass described as “a magician”.
Matisse saved the best fr last — the disabled end f his life, enjying the mst prductive, creative and innvative years f his artistic life. Matisse’s slutin was simple: painted paper, large tailr’s scissrs and a creative hand.
Tw days befre having my surgery, I went t see a large exhibitin f Matisse’s cututs with my family. All the wrks displayed had cme after Matisse’s cancer surgery, a perid he called his “secnd life”. I was unexpectedly emtinal seeing the 100 cututs. Thrugh mnths f radiatin treatment, I had been suffering frm severe pain, smetimes even unable t mve a muscle. Hwever, as I saw his wrks, I realized it wasn’t the end f the wrld and my nervusness disappeared.
After my surgery, I expected a full recvery. When it didn’t happen, I began t cme back t Matisse. Like him, I mstly use a wheelchair, and my cancer will require new treatments and mre adaptatins. But, as I hped, seeing his large cututs in December brught me t a whle new mindset. Fr example, the elegant Swimming Pl was the first wrk I saw entering the gallery. It reminded me hw the balletic scene lifted him as he cmpsed it acrss his hme walls in Nice.
I remembered Matisse’s statement: “Only what I created after my illness makes my real self: free, uncntrlled.” Nw I always encurage myself: Yu dn’t need t be a magician t have a new life.

Researchers at Nrthwestern University just fund a way t make a temprary pacemaker that’s cntrlled by light — and it’s smaller than a grain f rice.
Generally, pacemakers are small, implanted devices that regulate the heart’s beating. Temprary pacemakers are a subcategry. The current standard in temprary pacemakers invlves sewing electrdes (电极) t the heart via wires, which then g ut f the patient’s chest and cnnect t a bx. Igr Efimv, a heart expert, ntes: “When the pacemaker is n lnger needed, a physician pulls it ut. It’s highly likely that the wires can becme envelped in certain tissues. S, when the wires are pulled ut, that can ptentially damage the heart muscle.”
A study n the new device, published in the jurnal Nature, fund that the new tiny pacemaker delivered effective pacing in human hearts. The device is designed specifically fr patients wh need temprary pacemaking — like newbrn babies with heart prblems r heart surgery patients — and it’s made with materials that allw it t disslve (溶解) int the bdy nce it’s n lnger needed. Besides, it can be implanted withut any wire. The design culd ptentially help patients avid cmplicatins invlved with current temprary pacemakers.
Instead f using wires t deliver the small electrical pulses (脉冲) that keep the heart n track, the new device relies n light. It tracks patients’ heart rate n the utside f their chests. When their heart rate drps belw a certain level, it’s activated t prduce a tiny pulse f invisible light thrugh the skin t the pacemaker. Inside the bdy, the pacemaker, with a light-activated “n” and “ff” switch, then gives an electrical pulse whenever it’s “n”.
In the future, Efimv believes that the new pacemaker culd have applicatins fr varius heart cnditins. Fr thse with heart diseases like arrhythmias, multiple small pacemakers culd be placed arund the heart t crrect its rhythm. Currently, the tiny pacemaker is still in its testing phase, but Efimv strngly believes it culd be available within the next five years.
8. What is the main disadvantage f current temprary pacemakers?
A. High cst.B. Lw standards.C. Fragile structure.D. Underlying risk.
9. What may the new device cntribute t?
A. Diversity in materials.B. Accuracy in implantatin.
C. Simplificatin in treatments.D. Imprvement in effectiveness.
10. What des paragraph 4 fcus n?

C. The tracking technique f the new device.D. The shcking activeness f the new device.
11. What des the authr intend t d in the last paragraph?
A. T stress the new pacemaker’s bright prspect.
B. T list the new pacemaker’s psitive cmments.
C. T shw the new pacemaker’s wide applicatin.
D. T praise the new pacemaker’s pwerful functins.

The study, he said, was small and meant t encurage further research, nt t supprt sweeping cnclusins.
Sarah T. Rberts, an internet culture expert, sees the trend as a reflectin f brader scial frces. Hwever, Rberts warned against the risks f turning t scial media platfrms fr medical advice. Fr the mixed views, Te admitted fitness trends shuld be apprached with discernment. He’s nt claiming t replace traditinal walking — just t ffer an alternative. “As lng as yu’re nt misleading peple,” he said, “it’s great t innvate things.”
