Sme areas, such as the Nrth Atlantic — where the pwerful cean carries carbn frm the surface t deeper waters — saw acidificatin dwn t 1,500 metres. Sme pckets f deeper water that are naturally mre acidic saw even mre acidificatin than the surface, which limits their ability t take in mre CO2.
      “This is mre r less what researchers expected wuld happen as the cean takes up mre CO2,” says Müller. “But it’s a different thing t really see the data cming in t cnfirm this.”
      Ntably, abut half f all the acidificatin since 1800 ccurred after 1994, as ur emissins f CO2 have risen sharply. “We see this rather rapid prgressin,” says Müller.
      The level f acidificatin is s high that it threatens sea life in many parts f the cean, Fr example, sea butterflies are at particular risk because their shells disslve (溶解) in acidic water. The rise in acidificatin has als dubled the areas where cld-water crals will have truble surviving.
