Fr ver six years, refugees have been planting trees at the Nakivale refugee settlement (难民营). The idea came frm Burundian refugee Ench Twagirayesu, wh fled cnflict in 2003 and settled in Nakivale. The area used t be cvered in trees, but nw they are nwhere t see due t the need fr fuel, cnstructin materials and farming. This mtivated Twagirayesu and his fellw refugees t act.
“When we came here, Nakivale was a frest. After seven years, the frest disappeared. The trees we used fr cking ran ut, and wmen had t dig up tree rts fr cking,” Twagirayesu said.
Tday, ver 180,000 refugees live in the settlement, with new arrivals frm neighbring cuntries adding pressure t the already wrn-ut envirnment. Envirnmental disasters, like drughts, have wrsened the crisis — a drp in the water levels f Lake Nakivale, the main water surce fr the settlement.
Effrts by thse such as Twagirayesu have pushed develpment agencies t act. A plant nursery was established, where refugees are trained t grw seeds frm the nursery bed t their individual bed, and finally t the main gardens. “The nursery is a center fr envirnmental knwledge transfer,” said Nrbert Tumushabe, an envirnmental fficer.
Their effrts are paying ff. Many nce-bare areas are nw filled with trees, and rains have increased in the past few years. “We’ve planted ver 350 hectares f wdlts arund wetlands and Lake Nakivale,” said a lcal. T date, ver 460,000 trees have been planted.
Hwever, challenges remain. “In five years, we aim t reach the halfway mark f ur prgram — cvering the entire Natinal Envirnment Management Authrity (NEMA) belt in Nakivale, but we can’t affrd water tanks fr the dry seasn. We need help frm well-wishers like Nsamizi wh can ffer us water trucks,” Twagirayesu said.
      24. What caused the frest in Nakivale t disappear?
      A. Illegal activities.B. Natural disasters.
      C. Human survival needs.D. Industrial develpment.
      25. What made Lake Nakivale’s water levels drp?
      A. Defrestatin and drughts.B. Overuse by 180,000 refugees.
      C. Cnstructin f the settlement.D. Lack f tree planting arund it.
      26. Hw did develpment agencies respnd t the refugees’ effrts?
      A. By relcating the settlement.B. By ffering technical help.
      C. By prviding mre tree cuttings.D. By creating jb pprtunities.
      27. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?

While traditinal types f bks, such as nn-fictin, are becming less ppular, fantasy stries are catching n, as shwn by the Internatinal Bk Markets 2025 reprt. But what makes fantasy s hard t resist?
Fantasy is true t the human mind, especially t its wild side that we all feel but cannt easily express in daily life. Canadian philspher Charles Taylr nted that everyne lives within limits that bth cntrl and cmfrt us in “the buffered (缓冲的) self”, which makes us see the wrld as lacking magic and mystery. Therefre, we dn’t believe in ghsts r any supernatural frces. This idea prtects us frm cnfusin and fear, yet it als hlds back the wildest parts f ur imaginatin, making us hpe that magic and wnder culd smeday return t ur lives.
Besides, UK authr Adam Rberts pinted ut that fantasy serves as a cntrlled and safe return t the ideas we have ignred. It allws us t experience a gentle, limited versin f the legendary past. With its kings and adventures, fantasy brings back what we miss in ur mdern and rderly wrld f wrk and rutine, but nly in a cntrlled way. We enjy imagining urselves as strng heres r special “chsen nes” when real life makes us feel small. But we d nt want t live in a wrld ruled by pwerful kings and vilent warrirs.
Mrever, fantasy is smething nt just wanted but needed, as it encurages ur imaginatin, nted The Guardian. A purely scientific wrld feels cld and empty, unable t feed ur spirits. As Philip Pullman writes in The Rse Field, Lyra cnsiders that human beings need certain things we cannt prve, yet we wuld struggle t live withut them, especially ur imaginatin. As she says, “Maybe the imaginatin is a srt f wind that blws thrugh all the wrlds... It shws us true things.”
In a wrld where lgic and rutine take ver, fantasy is a reminder f a hidden lnging fr wnder.
      28. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic f the text?
      A. By listing different types f bks.B. By describing a shared human need.
      C. By quting a well-knwn philspher.D. By highlighting a recent market trend.
      29. Accrding t Charles Taylr, what is the functin f “the buffered self”?
      A. It inspires us t seek magic in ur daily lives.B. It prtects us but limits ur imaginatin.
      C. It creates a wrld full f mystery and wnder.D. It helps us express ur wild side mre freely.
      30. Accrding t Adam Rberts, what des fantasy help us d?
      A. Let us return t frgtten ideas safely.B. Teach us t ignre all ur strange ideas.
      C. Rule the wrld with kings and warrirs.D. Becme great heres in ur real daily life.
      31. Why des the authr mentin Lyra’s wrds in The Rse Field?
      A. T present the limits f science.B. T stress the imprtance f imaginatin.
      C. T suggest that imaginatin can be prven.D. T shw imaginatin is less imprtant than science.
      D
Sleeping five mre minutes, exercising 1.9 mre minutes, and eating healthier each day culd add a year t yur life. This isn’t just wishful thinking — it’s the cnclusin f a new study led by researchers frm Australia and the UK. Nichlas Kemel, wh led the study, tld the magazine Scientific American, “We always think that we need t make verhauls, but ur study shws that’s nt ften the case.”
Over eight years, the team studied 59,078 British peple. They prvided lifestyle and health details, and sme wre devices t track sleep and activity levels. Diet was scred 0-100 acrss 10 categries, with higher scres meaning healthier eating. Based n these data, researchers estimated pssible changes t participants’ lifespans using scientific mdeling.
The results shwed that peple wh sleep 5.5 hurs per night, exercise 7.3 minutes per day and have a diet quality scre f 36.9 culd theretically live a year lnger with just five additinal minutes f sleep, 1.9 minutes f vigrus (剧烈的) r mderate exercise and half an extra serving f vegetables each day. If imprving all three areas is t difficult, either 25 extra minutes f sleep per night r an additinal 2.3 minutes f exercise per day can als help.
Accrding t the study, patterns f sleep, physical activity and nutritin are well-knwn cntributrs t early death and nn-cmmunicable (非传染性的) diseases. Previusly, they’ve been studied separately, withut cnsidering hw they influence each ther r wrk tgether t affect health. Hwever, “these findings highlight the imprtance f cnsidering lifestyle behavirs as a package rather than in islatin,” Kemel tld CNN. He als stressed that the message here shuld nt necessarily be that making these small adjustments is a silver bullet (灵丹妙药). Instead, it’s abut taking the first step twards creating sustainable and achievable pprtunities fr mre peple.
      32. What des the underlined wrd “verhauls” mst prbably mean?
      A. Small imprvements.B. Cmplete changes.
      C. Daily habits.D. Difficult challenges.
      33. Hw did researchers cnduct the study?

      B. By prviding diet and exercise plans t participants.
      C. By cmparing the lifestyles f different age grups.
      D. By tracking participants’ habits and health ver the years.
      34. What did Kemel suggest peple d abut their lifestyle habits?
      A. Treat them as a whle.B. Ignre their cnnectins.
      C. Change them ne by ne.D. Imprve them in a shrt time.
      35. What is the main idea f this passage?
      A. Exercise and sleep determine verall health.
      B. Imprving health des nt require great effrts.
      C. Small lifestyle changes may help live lnger.
      D. A balanced diet is necessary fr health benefits.

I was 16 when Dad first tk me multi-pitch rck climbing (多层攀岩). We climbed shrter cliffs (峭壁), nly 20 t 30 feet tall, which felt like kid stuff, and I was ready fr the big climb.
On a sunny day while camping, Dad and I hiked t the base f an easy climb up Munt Edith in Banff, Alta. Dad climbed a few feet, hammered steel pitns (岩钉) int existing cracks, and clipped (扣住) the rpe int carabiners (锁扣) while I kept him safe frm belw.
Cnnected t Dad by the thick red rpe, I fllwed him up step by step, my hands gripping the rck and my feet finding small hlds as I went. I pulled thse same pitns back ut ne by ne as I climbed. When we finally reached the peak I felt n tp f the wrld — strng, fearless and prud f what I had accmplished.
Rappelling dwn (绕绳下降) the ppsite side f the muntain felt cmpletely different frm climbing up. As I lked dwn, I felt my heart race. We sn realized we didn’t have enugh rpe t reach the grund. S Dad searched arund and picked up a washed-ut gray rpe left behind by ther climbers. He std just abve me n the edge f the cliff, his feet planted firmly n the rck as he checked the rpe carefully t make sure it was safe. With quick and steady hands, he tied ff the tw rpes securely. With a deep breath, I mved slwly ver the edge, while Dad stepped back slightly, hlding the rpe with ne hand. He remained abve, watching clsely, ready t adjust the rpe if needed.
I stpped halfway dwn the cliff at an utcrpping (突出的) rck and balanced n the frnt f my left ft. Dad called dwn t me in a calm vice telling me t relax and mve my bdy slwly. His figure culd still be seen abve me, hlding the rpe steadily. The wind picked up slightly, making me shake. Just then, I heard my father yell, “Rck!”
