— 3 tablespns butter
— 2 eggs
— 2 medium carrts
— 1 small white nin
— 3 clves garlic
— 4 cups cked and chilled rice
I bet yu didn’t read thse numbers.
I’ll let yu in n a secret — I didn’t either.
The ingredients abve were cpied and pasted frm the first nline search result fr “fried rice recipe”.
But, withut any disrespect t the recipe’s wner, I can tell yu it’s wrng.
The nly true fried rice recipe is n recipe at all. There are n measurements, n exact instructins, n timer fr hw lng smething shuld sizzle in the pan. There are nly smells and feelings and memries. I learned t ck fried rice n the rickety(快要散架的) stl cvered in stickers, surrunded by the scents f my Grandma’s aprn. We used hwever much leftver rice we had and a cmbinatin f anything and everything sitting in the fridge. The kitchen was always a little messy, but that was part f the fun.
Yet I’ve always been mre f a baker than a ck. I enjy recipes — I enjy the prcess f being exact and finding details, adjusting and leveling and weighing. Frm a yung age, I fund cmfrt in the careful baking recipes in Western ckbks.
But I understand the beauty f spntaneity (即兴) and rganic creatin. There’s smething special in realizing that n tw recreatins f my grandma’s fried rice will ever be the same, and really, isn’t that what life is? Creatin, withut recipe?
It’s funny. This may cntradict everything I’ve written thus far, but the mre I bake, the mre I realize perhaps baking is spntaneus t. I dn’t always need t weigh my flur befrehand in rder t get perfect ckies. My signature fd is cupcake, but I challenged myself t use a different recipe every time. Yu’d be surprised at hw different cupcakes taste when yu add an extra egg, and yu’d be especially uncertain abut my baking skills if yu tried my cupcakes that had way t much baking sda (trial and errr…).
I’m learning t lve ging with the flw. It’s nt mutually exclusive with lving precisin, and it’s such an integral part f my culture; I’d be missing ut therwise. Cming t terms with and embracing the unknwn is scary, but I assure yu: One day, I’ll master my wn fried rice.
24. What des the authr think f the fried rice recipe?
A. It prvides inaccurate details. B. It includes t many ingredients.
C. It misses the essence f cking. D. It cntradicts the basics f cuisine.
25. The authr enjys baking because f .
A. her hpe t pass recipes n B. her lve f precisin and detail
C. her interest in a different culture D. her desire t hnur family traditins
26. The authr’s cupcake experiments made her mre .
"A.pen-minded" A. pen-minded B. rganized C. cnfident D. clear-headed
27. What can we learn frm this passage?
A. Fnd memries make a dish tasty. B. Precisin and creativity are inseparable.
C. Creativity prspers where rules end. D. Life desn’t always cme with a recipe.

In New Jersey’s suburban intersectins, an immature Cper’s hawk ( 鹰 ) was at wrk. It was unflding a nvel hunting strategy that wuld astnish even seasned ethlgists, which was dcumented by University f Tennessee researcher Vladimir Dinetes in his study Street Smarts: a remarkable adaptatin in a city-wintering raptr (猛禽).
Over 18 freezing winter mrnings, Dinetes bserved frm a parked vehicle as birds gathered n the sidewalk t eat fd left by residents. In a nearby tree, a yung hawk waited, listening fr a specific electric sund that signals it’s safe t crss the street. This high tne, tied t a red-light extensin frm 30 t 90 secnds, meant cars wuld stretch farther back alng the blck, frming a dense line. When that line reached a certain pint, the hawk wuld launch an attack, flying lw alng the sidewalk, hidden by the line f waiting cars. Then it wuld slip, bursting int the birds ’ feeding space and securing an exceptinally high hunting success rate.
Critically, the hawk avided attacks n weekends when cars didn’t line up sufficiently lng t prvide a visual barrier. This selectivity prved n accident: The hawk had learned t link the signal sund, traffic patterns and hunting pprtunities.
Cper’s hawks, nce restricted t deep wdlands, have inhabited Nrth American cities since the 1970s, but nly ne urban-adapted behavir — hunting near sunset lights — was previusly recrded. Dinetes ’ finding adds a far mre cmplex strategy, ne that demands mapping envirnments, tracking time-based clues and carrying ut plans.
Dinetes explains, “The hawk desn’t evlve urban skills anew but uses pre-existing prblem-slving ability meant fr frest hunts where it measures flight angles and escape paths amid branches. Its frest hunting skill translates int viewing city traffic as branches and crsswalks as tree gaps. This crss-cntextual thinking — where a bilgical instinct is adapted t an artificial landscape — is ne f the hallmarks f intelligence in the animal kingdm.”
As cities grw, understanding hw animals adapt will be crucial fr cnservatin and cexistence strategies. The study highlights the interplay between wildlife and human envirnments.
28 .What des the authr primarily intend t tell us in paragraph 2?
A .Lcal residents care fr birds well. B .Prlnged signal duratin causes traffic jam.
C .The hawk is skilled at timing its hunt. D .The hawk tends t launch attacks randmly.
29 .Why did the hawk avid its hunt n weekends?
A .Birds didn’t search fr fd then. B .Light traffic failed t prvide enugh cver.
C .Traffic lights were ut f functin. D .Bystanders interfered with its behavir.
30 .What lessn can we learn frm the hawk’s crss-cntextual thinking?
A .Use available resurces strategically. B .A patient heart eats the sweet fruit.
C .Dn’t fllw thers blindly. D .The early bird catches the wrm.
31 .What kind f writing methd is mainly used in the text?
A .Explaining a finding with relevant data. B .Defending a view thrugh an experiment.
C .Presenting a study with specific facts. D .Narrating a stry in time rder.

Artificial intelligence (AI) researchers have lng dreamed f tls t supercharge science—asking nvel questins, designing and running experiments. Recently, large language mdels (LLMs) have made
discveries that sme AI develpers claim have inched us clser t that future. But hw d yu test whether an AI mdel can truly d science?
Fr answers, researchers turn t benchmarks (基准): standardized sets f questins r tasks that help measure an AI’s efficiency and reliability and cmpare it against ther mdels. But the cmplexity f science makes assessing their aptitude especially challenging. As Ha Peng, a cmputer scientist at the University f Illinis Urbana-Champaign, puts it: “Mdels have all this knwledge. D they knw hw t use it?"
Dzens f new science-fcused benchmarks have emerged ver the past year t answer that questin, but scientists have yet t settle n a single best apprach. One f the mst ppular, published in Nature, is Humanity’s Last Exam (HLE). It uses 2500 questins drawn frm “the frntier f human knwledge” t put LLMs thrugh their paces. One, fr example, asks hw many types f sensry receptrs the human skin cntains. “We wanted a diverse dataset that nly experts wh have been wrking n a field fr a lng time can answer,” says Lng Phan, a research engineer with the HLE’s develper.
Since the HLE first appeared as a preprint in January 2025, the benchmark has becme an imprtant prving grund fr LLMs and HLE scres are nw a cmmn talking pint fr AI cmpanies seeking t highlight the capabilities f their prducts. At the HLE’s launch, the leading develper OpenAI’s l mdel wn the best scre at a mere 8.3%. Earlier this mnth, Ggle claimed that its latest reasning mdel fr science, called Gemini 3 Deep Think, had achieved a new recrd HLE scre f 48.4%.
But sme scientists argue that many f the HLE’s questins test fr little-knwn r even useless knwledge, rather than an ability t d meaningful research. A Nature editrial accmpanying the HLE’s publicatin als raised this issue: “We think that mre scientists shuld be asking: What wuld it take t develp an AI benchmark that truly measures expert-level thinking?”
32. What des the underlined wrd “aptitude” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Knwledge. B. Perfrmance. C. Intelligence. D. Prgress.
33. What des Lng Phan stress abut HLE?
A. Its tpic diversity. B. Experts ’ invlvement in it.
C. The expertise f its dataset. D. Its data-backed ppularity.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
A. HLE’s rle as a key AI test. B. Cmpanies’ use f HLE.
C. HLE scres f leading AI mdels. D. The prcess f HLE’s launch.
35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A. AI Still Can’t D Real Science
B. The Rise f HLE: A Benchmark fr AI
C. What Makes a Gd Science Benchmark?
D. Ggle Beats OpenAI n HLE

Finally, the big day arrived. Mm ffered her gift — a humble shebx. I lifted the tp carefully. The shebx was full t the tp, but as I pulled ut the tp piece, my heart sank. It wasn’t a stre-bught set. I knew that fabric — it was frm my wn utgrwn clthes.
“Brand-new and never been wrn by a dll!” Mm said. “I made these utfits just fr yu!” She was s prud f her accmplishment. I swallwed my disappintment and ran ver t hug her. She must have been secretly wrking at her sewing machine fr weeks, carefully cutting ut patterns, chsing fabrics, adding tiny details with her needle and thread and an abundance f patience. All s my dll culd lk her best. But they were nt what I had desired, after all.
