      Senses That Wrk Tgether
When we think abut hw ur senses wrk, we usually imagine them perating separately: yu sniff a flwer, and the smell is delivered uninterrupted frm nse t brain. Hwever, it's mre cmplex than that. Mst evidence fr crss-mdal perceptin (知觉) cmes frm studies int sund and visin (视觉). But research that shws ther senses crssing ver is cming ut all the time, and it seems that even sund and smell smetimes frm an unlikely pairing.
When New Yrk researchers, Daniel Wessn and Dnald Wilsn, tried t find ut the truth abut a "mysterius" area f the brain called the lfactry tubercle, they had t deal with this fact. Originally, they nly intended t measure hw lfactry tubercle cells in mice respnded t smell. But during testing, Wessn nticed that every time he put his cffee cup dwn, the muse cells jumped in activity. In fact, the lfactry tubercle is well-placed t receive bth smell and sund infrmatin frm the utside wrld. Later they fund that amng separate cells, mst respnded t a smell but a significant number were als active when a sund was made. Sme cells even behaved differently when smell and sund were presented tgether, by increasing r decreasing their activity.
Of curse, mice aren't peple, s research team has been carrying ut further experiments. They pulled tgether a grup f peple and gave them varius drinks t smell. Participants were asked t sniff the drinks, and then match them t apprpriate musical instruments and prduce the ntes at different levels. The results were interesting: pian was regularly paired with fruity fragrances; strng smells sunded like the instruments that are made f metal.
Further research fund that listening t different sunds can change yur perceptins. Studying taste this time, the team rdered sme special tffee (太妃糖) and put tgether "sundscapes" crrespnding t bitterness and sweetness. Participants tasted similar pieces f tffee while listening t each sundscape, and fund the tffee mre bitter r sweeter, depending n which sundtrack they were listening t.
Studies like this are helping scientists crrectly describe ur understanding f the senses, and hw the brain cmbines them with its advantage. The cnsequences are wrth cnsidering. Culd we see musicians wrk tgether with chefs t prduce sund-imprved fd and drink? Will yu be rdering a cffee with a sundtrack t bring ut yur favrite smell? Cme t think f it, that culd be ne thing yu hpe cffee shp chains dn't get rund t.

      B. the result cnfirmed what the researchers had suspected
      C. the mice seemed t be afraid f certain sunds r smells
      D. the cnnectin between sund and smell was fund by chance
10.What is the main idea f Paragraph 3?

      B. The purpse f the further experiments was ttally different.
      C. The result failed t supprt what was fund in previus experiments.
      D. Experiments shwed that links between sund and smell were cnsistent.
11.Hw des the authr feel abut the effect f the research?
      A. She is excited abut the creative chances.
      B. She is surprised at the recent develpments.
      C. She is cnvinced that the findings will be used sn.
      D. She is wrried abut hw the knwledge can be applied.

Technlgy is never a neutral tl fr achieving human ends. Technlgical innvatins reshape peple as they use these innvatins t cntrl their envirnment. Artificial intelligence, fr example, is altering humanity.
While the term AI cnjures up anxieties abut killer rbts r catastrphic levels f unemplyment, there are ther, deeper implicatins. As AI increasingly shapes the human experience, hw des this change what it means t be human? Central t the prblem is a persn’s capacity t make chices, particularly judgments that have mral implicatins.
Aristtle argued that the capacity fr making practical judgments depends n regularly making them — n habit and practice. We see the emergence f machines as substitute judges in a variety f everyday cntexts as a ptential threat t peple learning hw t effectively exercise judgment themselves.
In the wrkplace, managers rutinely make decisins abut wh t hire r fire and which lan t apprve, t name a few. These are areas where algrithmic prescriptin is replacing human judgment, and s peple wh might have had the chance t develp practical judgment in these areas n lnger will.
Recmmendatin engines, which are increasingly prevalent intermediaries (中间人) in peple’s cnsumptin f culture, may serve t cnstrain chice and minimize luck. By presenting cnsumers with algrithmically selected chices f what t watch, read, stream and visit next, cmpanies are replacing human taste with machine taste. In ne sense, this is helpful. After all, machines can survey a wider range f chices than any individual is likely t have the time r energy t d n their wn. At the same time, thugh, this selectin is ptimizing fr what peple are likely t prefer based n what they’ve preferred in the past. We think there is sme risk that peple’s ptins will be cnstrained by their past in a new and unanticipated way.
As machine learning algrithms imprve and as they train n mre extensive data sets, larger parts f everyday life are likely t becme utterly predictable. The predictins are ging t get better and better, and they will ultimately make cmmn experiences mre efficient and pleasant. Algrithms culd sn — if they dn’t already — have a better idea abut which shw yu’d like t watch next and which jb candidate yu shuld hire than yu d. One day, humans may even find a way fr machines t make these decisins withut sme f the biases that humans typically display.
But t the extent that unpredictability is part f hw peple understand themselves and part f what peple like abut themselves, humanity is in the prcess f lsing smething significant. As they becme mre and mre predictable, the creatures inhabiting the increasingly AI-mediated wrld will becme less and less like us.
12.What d we learn abut the deeper implicatins f AI?
      A. It mainly causes catastrphic levels f unemplyment.
      B. It increases peple’s access t infrmatin and entertainment.
      C. It enables peple t use innvatins t cntrl the envirnment.
      D. It changes hw humans make chices and understand themselves.
13.What may result frm increasing applicatin f recmmendatin engines?
      A. Cnsumers will have much limited chice.
      B. Cnsumers will actually enjy better luck.
      C. It will be easier t decide n what t enjy.
      D. Humans will develp tastes similar t machines.
14.What is the authr’s attitude tward the grwing predictability brught by AI?
      A. Neutral.B. Cautius.C. Supprtive.D. Skeptical.
15.Which culd be the best title fr the passage?

Many detectin aids rely n mbile devices t recrd such features as users’ vices, lcatins, facial expressins, exercise and sleep; then they apply artificial intelligence t mark the pssible change f a cnditin. Sme smart watches, fr instance, cntain a sensr that autmatically detects and warns peple f a dangerus heart rate. (17) These wearable detectin aids will nt replace a dctr any time sn but can be helpful partners in stressing cncerns that need fllw-up. (18) Sme are being develped t detect things such as cancerus DNA, stmach bleeds, bdy temperature and xygen levels. The sensrs inside yur bdy can then send the data t apps fr recrding.

46.It is n secret that literary wrks, like many ther pieces f art, are capable f making an emtinal impact n their audience. One can say it is the ability t influence the reader’s md that makes a stry gd and memrable.
A writer can shw the ptimistic nature f a fictinal character in a variety f ways. Creating a cntrast between the main character’s persnality and external reality is amng the mst emtinally efficient means. Therefre, there is usually a juxtapsitin between the imagined wrld f a bk and the readers’ wrld arund them.
At times when the wrld is “all ver the place” and causes severe stress fr peple, having the chance t immerse (使沉浸) neself int the fictinal wrld and spend sme time with the characters f the stry can be a relief. Fr example, during the peaks f the pandemic when the news media was reprting high numbers f infected patients as well as spiking ICU rates, mre and mre peple wanted t shelter themselves frm the reality and take a break frm it. While escaping the wrld arund us is nt realistic fr a lng time, having an pprtunity t escape just fr sme time is a luxury that literature can ffer.
There are a large number f bks that ffer the safe escape int a fictinal wrld and teach their readers that there are n unslvable prblems. The adventures thrugh which the reader ges tgether with bk characters ften prvide teachable lessns and underline the imprtance f remaining ptimistic. As mentined by Mntgmery in Anne f Green Gables, “Tmrrw is always fresh, with n mistakes in it yet.” It illustrates that the characters f the bk have made sme mistakes and have harvested the cnsequences f them, but the next day is a new page with new pprtunities.

Hwever, clning als raises mral cncerns. Sme peple wrry that the technlgy might be abused fr unethical purpses. In my pinin, whether science is a blessing r a curse depends n mankind. If handled with cautin, clning will surely bring mre benefits t ur wrld.
      Best regards,
      Li Hua
