Kristin Kimball, a travel writer, drve frm New Yrk studi t Pennsylvania t write
abut a yung sustainable farmer she’d heard f. When she arrived at the farm, the farmer said
he was t busy t be interviewed, even thugh they had previusly scheduled it.
“Instead,” Kimball remembers, “he handed me a garden tl and said, ‘There’s the
vegetable land.’ That was the first time that I actually did any farm wrk, and yet when I
started ding the wrk, I was shcked at hw viscerally I respnded.”
“And smething happened that day. I just fell in lve with the wrk.” she adds. “I think
that human beings are in sme way brn t be farmers. This is what mst peple in the histry
f the wrld have fcused their energy n.”
In a way, Kristin Kimball was lucky. When she decided t mve t a farm in upstate New
Yrk, she had n idea what she was getting int. Seven years after her life-changing mve frm
Manhattan t Essex Farm, Kimball has dcumented her adjustment t rural living in her new
bk, The Dirty Life. The title f her bk, Kimball says, cmes frm the fact that farm wrk is
cnsistently dirty. “I had n idea yu culd be dirty in s many different ways,” she says.
4
“There’s dirt. There’s bld. There’s sweat. There’s yur wn sweat, and the sweat f the
animals.”
In spite f the cnstant hard wrk, Kimball’s farm still has its quiet, rmantic mments.
The first year she planted ptates, the yield was enrmus — arund 10,000 punds. Friends
were called t help. “It was truly fall,” Kimball writes:
The air was still cld at nn despite the bright sun. We biled ptates in their skins in
the field, and served them steaming in napkins. We all warmed ur chilled fingers n them,
ppped them pen, invested them with quantities f butter and salt. If there is a mre perfect
way t celebrate the ptat’s earthy, sustaining essence (本质), I have nt discvered it yet.
24. What des the underlined wrd “viscerally” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Naturally. B. Patiently. C. Passively. D. Hesitantly.
25. Which f the fllwing can best describe Kimball’s path t farming?
A. Well-planned. B. Interest-based. C. Unexpectedly-taken. D. Curisity-driven.
26. Why did Kimball write the bk?
A. T share the jy f harvest.
B. T prmte the benefits f farming.
C. T recrd her adaptatin t cuntry life.
D. T intrduce the farming skills she learned.
27. What des Kimball intend t express in the last paragraph?
A. The happiness in cking ptates.
B. The satisfactin gained frm farm life.
C. The significance f teamwrk in farming.
D. The challenges f farming in cld weather.

Over 2, 000 years ag, Baiae was the mst magnificent resrt twn in Italy. Wealthy
statesmen including Cicer and Caesar were nce drawn t its natural springs. But ver the
centuries, vlcanic activity submerged this playgrund f the Rman nbles — leaving half f
it beneath the Mediterranean.
Tday, Baiae is ne f the wrld’s few underwater archaelgical parks pen t visitrs
wanting t explre the remains f the ancient Rman city. A prtected marine area, the site
needs t be mnitred fr damage caused by divers and envirnmental factrs. Hwever,
explains Davidde, Italy’s natinal supervisr fr underwater cultural heritage, “cmmunicatin
underwater is challenging.”
5
Cabled systems are the mst reliable, but they are difficult t maintain and cver a limited
peratinal area. And wireless internet desn’t wrk well in water, because f the way water
interacts with electrmagnetic waves.
S Davidde teamed up with a grup f engineers led by Chiara Petrili, a prfessr at
Sapienza University. Petrili’s team has develped a netwrk f underwater wireless sensrs
capable f gathering envirnmental data and transmitting it t land in real time. The system
relies n AI algrithm (算法) t cnstantly change the netwrk prtcl (网络协议). As the
sea cnditins change, the algrithms adjust the infrmatin path, allwing the signal t travel
up t tw kilmeters and data t be sent between transmitters ne kilmeter apart.
At Baiae, underwater internet allws remte, cntinuus mnitring f envirnmental
cnditins. Besides, it allws divers t cmmunicate with ne anther and with clleagues
abve the surface, wh can als use the technlgy t lcate them with a high degree f
accuracy.
Davidde anticipates that the netwrk will be available t turists visiting the
archaelgical site in the cming mnths. As they swim ver the ruins, visitrs will use
waterprf smart tablets t cmmunicate and t view 3D recnstructins f the ruins.
“Underwater internet has made mnitring f the archaelgical site simpler and mre
efficient,” says Davidde. “At the same time, we can ffer the public a new, interactive way t
explre the underwater park.”
28. What d we knw abut Baiae?
A. It was nted fr natural springs. B. It is a playgrund fr sprts lvers.
C. It was destryed by human activity. D. It is unattractive t adventurus visitrs.
29. What can we learn frm Paragraph 3?
A. Cabled systems are easy t keep in gd cnditin.
B. Wireless netwrk functins prly underwater.
C. Electrmagnetic waves imprve wireless signals.
D. Unlimited cverage is the strength f cabled systems.
30. What is the underwater netwrk capable f ding?
A. Allwing divers t lcate themselves.
B. Marking the infrmatin path t the surface.
C. Bringing new life int submerged Rman ruins.
D. Making it easier t mnitr archaelgical sites.
31. What is the purpse f this text?
6
A. T explain underwater cmmunicatin. B. T analyze the effect f climate change.
C. T intrduce a new underwater netwrk. D. T prmte a new way t explre Baiae.
D
Cnstant city nise is hard t keep ut f hmes and businesses, as lw-frequency sunds
like traffic and cnstructins easily spread thrugh walls. Expensive, specialized paneling can
help, but a new study in the Jurnal f Applied Physics shws hw everyday materials and
clever physics can als d the trick, creating a kind f sund insulatr (隔 音 材 料 ) frm
ping-png balls.
Rbine Sabat, a researcher at the University f Lille in France, has been trying t imprve
nise insulatin by studying hw sund waves bunce arund in cavities (腔). When a sund
wave passes ver a cavity, the wave squeezes and releases the air inside. This makes the air
vibrate at a particular frequency depending n the cavity’s size, shape and any hles it might
have. And if the cavities are cnstructed in just the right way, the buncing sund waves inside
will cancel ne anther ut.
Sabat chse ping-png balls as a lw cst ptin with gemetric prperties that create
resnance (共振) in the right lw-frequency range. By drilling five hles in each ball, her team
turned them int resnant cavities that each filter ne frequency band ut f the surrunding
nise. But cmbining the resnating balls t weaken large ranges f sund is tricky because the
sund waves interact and affect which frequencies get reduced. T find the right arrangement,
the researchers placed micrphnes inside tw balls and adjusted the hles’ psitins and sizes
until the cmbinatin captured multiple frequency bands. They added and adjusted mre balls
until the structure absrbed a wide range f frequencies.
“The design gives excellent sund reductin”, says Olga Umnva, a researcher at the
University f Salfrd. She adds that a systematic real-wrld cmparisn with simpler ptins,
such as glass sheets separated by an air gap, wuld be an imprtant next step. Cmputer
simulatins have estimated that the ping-png paneling imprves sund reductin by 30
percent cmpared with an air gap alne.
Sabat’s team hpes lw-tech adjustments t the new technique culd als help with ther
aims, such as fcusing sund waves t imprve sund quality in cncert halls.
32. What is paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A. The surce f nise pllutin.
B. The design f sund insulatr.
C. The prcess f sund wave transmissin.
7
D. The principle f sund reductin in cavities.
33. What is critical fr achieving multi-frequency bands absrptin?
A. The number f the balls used. B. The placement f micrphnes.
C. The lcatin and dimensin f hles. D. The material prperties f glass sheets.
34. What is Olga Umnva’s attitude t the ping-png ball-based insulatr?
A. Favrable. B. Disapprving. C. Neutral. D. Dismissive.
35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A. Ping-png Balls: New Sund Blcker
B. Hle-Buncing Sund: A Clever Trick
C. Gemetric Resnance: The Key t Silence
D. Sund Waves: Their Mysterius Interactins

Pilates, which are dne in rms as ht as 38 degrees Celsius. But are high-temperature
wrkuts really better?
The answer isn’t as simple as a yes r n. 37 There may be sme benefits f
exercising in high temperatures. It is believed that these wrkuts warm the muscles, which can
help yu avid injuries. Heated wrkuts may als help yu burn mre calries. This is
because they make yur heart wrk a bit harder. But befre yu turn the heat up, it’s nt all
gd news. Fr ne thing, yur bdy might nt be able t wrk as hard in high heat as it can in
cler temperatures, meaning yur wrkut wn’t be as gd as yu might like.
Beynd reduced perfrmance, the risks t physical health are mre wrrying. There are
als health risks related t exercising in high temperatures. Because the bdy sweats mre, it’s
easy t get dehydrated (脱水). 38 In that case, yu may feel tightening and discmfrt
in yur muscles r stmach.
The biggest risk f exercising in heat is heatstrke (中暑). 39 It is a dangerus
state f extreme verheating which happens when yur bdy gets t ht and its temperature
ges ver degrees Celsius. This situatin f high bdy temperature, like heatstrke, can cause
serius damage t different parts f yur bdy, like yur brain, heart, liver and kidneys and in
8
extreme cases, even death.
40 If yu d want t try heated exercise, there are ways t make it safer.
Drinking lts f water helps stp yu frm getting dehydrated. And try t wear light clthes
and take breaks when yu need t!
A. This is the mst severe cnsequence f verheating during exercise.
B. In fact, the effects f high-temperature exercise are duble-edged.
C. Hwever, these benefits cme with significant drawbacks t cnsider.
D. Even a shrt time in the sun can leave yu feeling exhausted and dizzy.
E. Sweating als means lsing imprtant salts.
