Alaqua was all thse things Marvel was lking fr: She’s deaf. She’s Indigenus. She’s a wman in her 20s. But she wasn’t an actress. Plus, the character wasn’t an amputee like Alaqua, wh has had her right leg remved. S at first, Alaqua laughed it ff. But then tw mre friends sent her the same pst. After that, smething changed. “Let’s g fr it,” she remembers thinking. “Why nt?”
Alaqua never dreamed f being famus. She grew up n a Menminee Indian Reservatin with her three siblings. But she was the nly deaf student in her middle schl. Peple had t translate things int American Sign Language (ASL) fr her. They weren’t always the best at it, thugh. “I was very shy and islated as a kid,” she says. And Alaqua definitely didn’t see many peple wh lked like her n TV. Mst f the Indigenus characters she saw were played by nn-Indigenus actrs. There weren’t many deaf r disabled actrs either.
Alaqua didn’t think she wuld be the ne t change that. But after three mnths f tryuts, she gt a call. The part was hers! Nt nly wuld Maya Lpez be the first deaf Indigenus superher — she wuld be an amputee t. That felt imprtant t Alaqua. “It shws ther peple with disabilities that they can d anything,” she says.
Alaqua’s experience in schl helped her knw what she needed t succeed n Hawkeye. She asked fr deaf acting caches and trainers. She als suggested that the cast and crew take ASL classes. When she arrived n set, peple were able t greet her in ASL. “That meant s much t me,” she says.
Alaqua will never frget being that shy middle schler. When asked what she wuld tell her yunger self, she desn’t think twice. “Yu are perfect the way yu are,” she says.

Cws itch, just like us. They rub their bdies against trees and fences. But Vernika the cw takes things int her wn hands, r rather, int her muth. Vernika can curl her tngue arund the handle f a brush and bring it t her muth. Hlding it between her teeth, Vernika swings her head t the side t brush her back. Vernika wasn’t trained t d this, which means cws are smarter than we think.
Vernika the cw lives in Austria. Her wner is a farmer and baker named Witgar Wiegele. He keeps Vernika as a pet. Wiegele began t ntice that she smetimes picked up sticks. He thught this was amazing.
Alice Auersperg is a scientist. She and anther scientist, Antni J. Osuna-Mascaró, visited Vernika. They wanted t study hw she uses the brush as a tl. They put a large brush in frnt f Vernika in a randm psitin. The cw picked up the brush t scratch herself 76 times. She mved it with her tngue, and then she picked it up with her teeth. Smetimes she wuld let the brush g. Then she wuld pick it back up again t get the right psitin.
The scientists say that this is a ptential sign f cmplex mental prcesses — the ability t reasn, think critically, make decisins, and be creative. Anther sign f Vernika’s intelligence is that she used different parts f the same tl fr different purpses.
Peple used t think that nly humans culd make and use tls. But then came a chimpanzee named David Greybeard. In the 1960s, scientist Jane Gdall watched David use a tl. He used grass as a tl t get insects t eat. Since then scientists have seen many animals use tls, including rcas, elephants, and ctpuses.
But what cunts as using a tl? Des the animal actually have t make the tl, like crws? They use sticks t get insects t eat. Or des an animal need t hld the tl? Wrasse fish dn’t have hands. They smash crabs against rcks t remve the shells.
Yet Osuna-Mascaró desn’t think Vernika is special. He believes ther cws can learn t use tls t. All they need is a lng and happy life, like Vernika has enjyed.
      8. Why d scientists say cws like Vernika are smarter than peple think?
      A. Vernika is the nly cw wh can learn t use a tl.
      B. Wiegele has mre than ne cw trained like Vernika.
      C. Brushes and sticks are nt the nly tls Vernika uses.
      D. Vernika was never trained t use a tl t brush her back.
      9. Why did the authr include the infrmatin abut Vernika being a pet?
      A. T explain why it was easier t study Vernika than wild animals.
      B. T shw hw Vernika came t live n the farm f Witgar Wiegele.
      C. T elabrate n pinins abut Vernika’s brain shared by ther cws.
      D. T suggest that Vernika’s living cnditins made her capable f learning.
      10. What is the functin f paragraph 4?
      A. T describe Antni J. Osuna-Mascaró’s wrk in science.
      B. T illustrate that Vernika can use mre than ne tl at nce.
      C. T emphasize the pssible significance f Vernika’s behavir.
      D. T intrduce the idea that many animals are knwn t use tls.
      11. Hw did Jane Gdall becme invlved with studying hw animals use tls?
      A. By bserving a chimpanzee wh used grass t get insects.
      B. By figuring ut hw chimpanzees use sticks t get insects.
      C. By watching a chimpanzee wh smetimes picked up sticks.
      D. By learning frm ther scientists wh wrk with wrasse fish.
      D
Trainers and caches acrss the Natinal Ftball League (NFL) are nw emplying the league’s innvative system: Digital Athlete, develped by Infinite Athlete, a data and perfrmance analytics firm. This AI-pwered platfrm is designed t help teams maximize player perfrmance and minimize injury risks.
Built by data engineers, AI specialists and bimechanists — experts wh study bdy mvements in living rganisms, the platfrm cntains cmprehensive data n ver 2,000 players. Each athlete is represented by a digital avatar cnstructed frm their perfrmance in training and cmpetitive matches. The technlgy can detect subtle changes that indicate a heightened risk f injury r excessive physical pressure. Teams rely n these insights t prevent injuries and maintain a strng and healthy lineup.
The Minnesta Vikings clsely mnitr their players daily thrughut the seasn. Players with higher injury risk are highlighted in red, prmpting trainers and sprts scientists t cnsult the data alngside their n-field bservatins. “When d we knw an athlete is verwrked r underprepared?” said Tyler Williams, the Vikings’ vice president f player health and perfrmance. “We can knw that by measuring the data, right?”
Much f this mnitring is enabled by Hawk-Eye, a high-speed camera system riginally designed fr tennis and cricket. Nw installed in mst majr stadiums, it supplies accurate data t the AI platfrm. The system analyzes variatins in players’ acceleratin, deceleratin and mvement patterns, and can issue injury-risk warnings up t 48 hurs befre practices r games.
Since Digital Athlete’s launch in 2023, lwer-bdy injuries in practices have decreased by rughly 14 percent. The technlgy als assisted in designing the NFL’s new kickff rules, which reduce high-speed cllisins while increasing kickff return rates.
Accrding t Chris Brwn, the chief technlgy fficer fr Infinite Athlete, the next step is t make a team facility where all data cmes tgether in real time. Hawk-Eye cameras wuld wrk with ther tls, including sensrs that measure an athlete’s frce and weight and track their health data. Tgether, data can create a cmplete digital picture f the athlete’s activity.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “avatar” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A. A virtual image f a real player.B. A new tl used t analyze data.
      C. A recrd f previus game results.D. A digital system fr cllecting data.
      13. What d Williams’ wrds suggest in paragraph 3?
      A. Data enables assessment f players’ physical state.
      B. Teams lack effective ways t ensure players’ safety.
      C. Ftball injuries are hardly avidable in cmpetitins.
      D. Field bservatins utweigh the data-based judgments.
      14. Hw des Hawk-Eye cntribute t the Digital Athlete platfrm?
      A. It mnitrs players’ health cnditins in real time n the field.
      B. It captures accurate sprts data and sends it t the AI platfrm.
      C. It is designed t help the league make new ftball match rules.
      D. It directly analyzes players’ mvement data and issues warnings.
      15. What can be inferred abut the future f the system?
      A. Athletes may give up sme privacy fr safety.
      B. AI systems have stepped int daily life widely.
      C. Sensrs will replace cameras in the near future.
      D. Mre types f data will be integrated in the future.
