We use glf t create pssibilities, helping yung peple see a brighter future.”
At first she struggled t find students. What finally wrked, Fluker says, was ffering free pizza at a cmmunity center. Alng with their pizza, the students gt free glf lessns and listened t talks abut cllege and careers. In 2001 the grup had 17 students. Last year, 250 senirs frm 76 sutheast Michigan high schls were selected frm abut 2,000 applicants. In recent years, the students have attended special classes at the Schl at Marygrve. While vlunteers teach the students skills such as writing cllege applicatins and filling in jb frms, glf lessns are taught by prfessinals frm the PGA f America, an rganizatin that aims t grw interest and participatin in glf.
S far, mre than 130 cllege students have graduated frm the Midnight Glf Prgram. Fluker says she is “mved t tears” when she thinks f their success. One early student, fr example, grew up in public husing, went t Hward University, and finally received a Ph.D. in nursing.
Fluker says being arund s many yung peple helps keep her feeling yung. Her friends called her “crazy” fr nt enjying her retirement. But because f her effrts, many peple have been helped.

Picture this: yu win three tickets t a sld-ut cncert and excitedly text yur friends t see if they wuld like t jin yu. Their reply? “Maybe.” Immediately, yur excitement drps, fr nw yu have t wait fr their decisins befre yu can finalize yur cncert plans.
If yu’ve experienced smething like this, yu’re nt alne. The “maybe” respnse t invitatins is a cmmn upset in scial life. S, what’s ging n when peple aren’t sure hw t refuse an invitatin? What leads t this uncertain, awkward behavir?
Researchers have fund that peple prefer saying “maybe” t saying “n” because f smething called mtivated reasning( 动机性推理), which happens when invitees view infrmatin in a biased way t serve their wn interests. In ther wrds, receivers f an invitatin make themselves believe that inviters want t hear a “maybe” because it helps them keep their chices pen. Als, peple ften imagine that saying “n” will ruin the relatinship, cmpletely ignring the pssibility that hnesty might be appreciated .
Hwever, there are situatins where mtivated reasning fails, and peple chse t say “n” directly. When invitees put themselves in the inviter’s shes, they realize that a clear “n” is mre helpful. Additinally, if the invitatin hlds n interest fr them at all, they n lnger feel the need t leave their ptins available.
While saying “n” can be uncmfrtable, being direct and clear is always the best plicy. It may limit yur chices, but it saves the inviter frm uncertainty and helps prtect the relatinship. Next time a ht cncert cmes alng, yur friends will be even mre likely t think f yu first!

      C. Uncertainty abut the invitatin. D. Wishes t keep their chices pen.
      31. What is the authr’s attitude tward saying “maybe” t an invitatin?
      A. Supprtive. B. Unclear. C. Disapprving. D. Indifferent.

Faced with the grwing dangers f climate change, scientists are cnsidering a new plan: mving endangered animals t new habitats far frm their ld hmes. This methd, called assisted migratin (辅助迁徙), is designed t prtect these animals frm rising temperatures and habitat lss.
A recent example is the relcatin f the Sty strm-petrel, a seabird that usually lives n lw-lying islands in Hawaii and Japan. Its main nesting (筑巢的) area, Tern Island, is nly 1.8 meters high and is being wrn away by the sea. Therefre, abut 40 yung birds have been taken 800 kilmeters away t Oahu. The bilgist Eric Vander Werf ntes that climate
change is making such actins increasingly necessary. It is hped that these birds can return t their riginal living places if the envirnment imprves.
This new way f prtecting animals is gaining wider acceptance. There are plans t update the Endangered Species Act, making it easier t mve the mst threatened species t new places. Because f this, fficials and scientists have identified sme animals and plants that might be mved, including Flrida’s Key deer, Karner blue butterfly, as well as sme desert plants and lizards.
Hwever, nt everyne supprts this apprach. Sme lawmakers argue that intrducing new species int different ecsystems (生态系统) can create new risks, such as threatening native species r damaging the lcal envirnment.
The bilgist Jasn McLachlan pints ut that this is a majr change in ur means f saving species. He als believes that as glbal warming frces animals t mve at an alarming rate, the traditinal idea f what is regarded as a native species is nt as clear as it nce was. In the past, climate changes happened s slwly ver thusands f years that plants and animals culd fully adapt t the new envirnment, but tday such changes are happening much t quickly fr mst ecsystems.
      32. Why were the Sty strm-petrels mved t Oahu?
      A. T prtect native species. B. T fllw wildlife laws.
      C. T escape rising sea levels. D. T return t riginal habitat.
      33. What can we knw abut Flrida’s Key deer?

      B. They are under gd prtectin.
      C. They have been fficially mved.
      D. They have been settled in new places.
      34. What can we infer frm Jasn McLachlan’s wrds?
      A. Animals fail t mve fast enugh.
      B. Peple value native species highly.
      C. Assisted migratin will be well accepted.
      D. The definitin f native species needs recnsidering.
      35. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
      A. T discuss the risks f relcatin. B. T describe dangers t wild animals.
      C. T call fr immediate climate actin. D. T intrduce a new prtectin methd.
