“Ugh, why are yu still wrking at yur age? Yu’re seventy-tw!” Jared asked. Grandma just smiled and kept cking, her hands mving quickly — puring sup, adding tppings, passing bwls t custmers with a warm nd.
“Sit there and watch, by,” Grandma said. “There are things bks d nt teach.” Jared didn’t understand. T him, it just lked like hard, tiring wrk.
As the mrning went n, Jared began t ntice small things. Grandma knew every custmer’s name and she remembered their small favrites — extra fish balls fr ne, n spring nins fr anther, less salt fr the third. When a little by drpped his spn, Grandma quietly handed him a new ne befre he even asked. When an ld lady struggled with her tray, she came arund and helped her take it t her table.
“Dn’t yu get tired f all this?” Jared finally asked during a shrt break. Grandma smiled. “Of curse, I d. But withut it, I was never able t pay fr yur father’s educatin. And when I see elderly peple wh might nt get a gd meal fr the day, I knw why I must cntinue. Tiredness ges away. But the will t keep ging, bwl after bwl, stays.”
Jared didn’t say anything. He had thught his grandma’s jb was just abut making ndles. But watching her tday, Jared saw hw Grandma served each bwl with care. What he had thught was just cking turned ut t be admirable wrk.
“Yu shuld enjy life in yur ld age!” Jared asked as he helped clean up. Grandma lked at him and said, “Peple remember hw yu make them feel. In fact, I enjy spending my time this way.” Jared laughed a little. Between playing vide games and making smene smile, he nw knew which ne cunted mre.

We ften talk abut “trusting ur gut.” But the gut feelings peple refer t can actually cme frm tw very different surces: instinct and intuitin. Because they feel s similar — fast, autmatic (自动的), smetimes emtinal — we are likely t treat them the same, which can lead t pr decisin-making in many situatins.
Instinct refers t inbrn behaviral respnses (反应) shaped by evlutin (进化). These respnses are fast and autmatic because they cme frm brain systems such as the amygdala and brainstem, which prcess threat and survival signals. When yu jump back frm smething that lks dangerus r feel a sudden rush f fear, yur brain fcuses n speed rather than accuracy (准确性). In evlutinary terms, reacting quickly t pssible danger increased the chances f survival.
Intuitin, by cntrast, cmes frm experience-based pattern recgnitin. Research n expert decisin-making shws that peple wh have spent years in a field develp the ability t ntice small details that thers miss. Psychlgist Gary Klein recrded this in studies f firefighters and emergency wrkers: experienced prfessinals ften sensed that smething was wrng befre they culd explain why. Their intuitin was nt mysterius — it was the brain rapidly matching present signs t patterns learned ver time.
Next time yu experience an autmatic respnse such as fear, attractin, r cnfidence, take a mment t pause fr a while and ask yurself the fllwing tw questins: (1) Is this instinct r intuitin? (2) Are yu in immediate danger r is this a mre cmplex (复杂的) situatin?
(a) If yur respnse is instinct in immediate danger, act right away. (b) Hwever, instincts can g wrng in cmplex mdern situatins, s slw dwn and questin them. (c) If yu have experience in similar fast-mving situatins, strng intuitin may be wrth acting n quickly. (d) In slwer-develping r mre cmplex situatins, treat intuitins as hyptheses (假设) and examine them thrugh mre thinking and evidence.
Instinct and intuitin bth act withut ur active mental prcessing, which is why they’re ften put tgether as “gut feelings”, but they arise frm different mechanisms and serve different purpses.
S instead f asking whether t trust yur gut, a better questin is: what kind f gut feeling is this? Once yu knw that, deciding what t d next becmes much easier.
27. What is the difference between instinct and intuitin?
A. Instinct cntrls feelings; intuitin cntrls actins.B. Instinct is inbrn; intuitin is frm experience.
C. Instinct is strng; intuitin is weak.D. Instinct is slw; intuitin is fast.
28. What is the main idea f Paragraph 5?
A. Hw t tell instinct and intuitin apart.B. When t act n instinct and intuitin.
C. Hw t stay away frm danger.D. Why peple have gut feelings.
29. Which f the fllwing wuld the writer mst prbably agree with?
A. Trusting ur gut feelings can lead t pr decisin-making.
B. Instinct is mre believable because it prtects us frm threats.
C. Telling instinct frm intuitin helps make better decisins.
D. Intuitin is frmed by nticing and analyzing small details.
D
The use f AI cmpanins (伴侣) is grwing quickly. Cmpanies ffer peple AI friends, and many peple nw use chatbts as smene t talk t.
This is nt surprising. AI cmpanins ffer smething that n human relatinship can — intimacy (亲密关系) withut risk. They never blame yu fr a bad day. They dn’t get angry. And they dn’t judge yu. They listen patiently and seem t always understand yu. This lack f frictin (摩擦) is attractive, because real human relatinships are hard. In real life, peple ften misunderstand each ther. We may argue, r even hurt each ther. These experiences are nt pleasant, but they are unavidable. That is why many peple are attracted t AI — it seems t ffer all the gd parts f a relatinship withut the difficult nes.
Hwever, this “perfect” experience may nt be gd fr us. Accrding t the psychanalyst Dnald Winnictt, a parent wh always meets their child’s every need perfectly desn’t prduce a thriving child; they prduce a dependent ne. Children d nt grw well in a perfectly frictinless envirnment. It is small, manageable failures that actually help children learn patience and becme strnger.
Similarly, we als need imperfect relatinships t grw. When we nly chse easy and cmfrtable cnnectins, we may stp develping imprtant skills. Fr example, we may becme less able t deal with stress, accept different pinins, r cntrl ur emtins. AI prvides a “perfect” relatinship with n arguments r discmfrt, but it remves the frictin that helps us imprve.
Mre imprtantly, new ideas and creativity ften cme frm disagreement and challenge. When everything runs smthly withut any frictin, peple may nt try t think deeper r d better. While AI can be asked t challenge us, that’s frictin n demand (需要) — frictin we can cntrl and we can always stp when we feel uncmfrtable. Real creative frictin is different. It’s frm a mind that sees things anther way. We can’t cntrl r stp it especially when an idea has its weakness expsed. It frces us t rethink.
S what meaningful steps can we take t prtect the frictin? First, we can start by nticing when yu turn t AI just fr cmfrt. Als, instead f aviding difficult cnversatins, learn t stay with them. Ask thers fr hnest pinins and really listen. Finally, keep at least ne relatinship fully human.
AI can simulate (模拟) friendship, but it cannt replace real human relatinships. Thugh imperfect, real human relatinships are where grwth happens — thrugh frictin. T replace it with cmfrt wuld be a great lss.
30. Hw des the writer explain why many peple are attracted t AI in Paragraph 2?
A. By describing the pleasant experiences with AI.B. By cmparing AI with real human relatinships.
C. By telling a stry f using chatbts as friends.D. By intrducing the ppularity f AI cmpanins.
31. The wrd “thriving” in Paragraph 3 mst prbably means ________.
A. strictly fllwing all rulesB. always depending n thers
C. willing t try new thingsD. able t stand n ne’s wn feet
32. Accrding t the passage, what is a gd example f real creative frictin?
A. Ask AI fr new ideas but stp when upset.B. Read articles that agree with yu.
C. Talk t a friend wh finds yur mistakes.D. Use chatbts t fix yur ideas nicely.
33. What is the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage?
A. T encurage peple t develp real human relatinships.
B. T shw the advantages f AI cmpanins in daily life.
C. T teach children hw t becme mre independent.
D. T advise peple t use AI cmpanins wisely.
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)

Imagine yu are at a birthday party. There are lts f candies laid ut n the table and yu can help yurself t whatever yu want. Yu eat lts f chclate! Later that evening, yu begin t feel sick. Yu think t yurself, “I wish I had stpped eating sner”.
Peple ften cmpare what actually happened in life t what culd have happened. When what actually happened is wrse than what culd have happened, then peple can feel regret. Regret is smething that lts f peple experience. We can have big regrets, like nt wrking harder at schl r we can have small regrets, like picking the lnger queue at lunch. Regret is s cmmn and unpleasant that researchers have spent a lt f time trying t understand it.
In a famus study, researchers asked lts f peple t describe a time when they experienced regret. Interestingly, when peple were asked abut recent regrets, they ften mentined things they did, like making an embarrassing jke. But when peple were asked what they regretted ver their whle lives, they usually mentined things they did nt d, like nt spending enugh time with friends and family.
Other studies als shwed smething special abut regret: Peple seldm felt regret fr things they culd nt change. This suggests that feeling respnsible fr an utcme is necessary t experience regret. When peple feel regret, they think “if nly I had acted differently, things wuld be better!”. Researchers believe regret might play a special rle in helping peple t understand where a decisin went wrng and hw they can d better next time.
In summary, regret ften helps peple make better decisins and learn frm their mistakes. Hwever, smetimes regret is nt helpful. Peple wh spend lts f time thinking abut the things they regret reprt feeling less satisfied with their lives. With this in mind, it is imprtant t avid getting t caught up in past regrets. Instead, fcus n the present and try t make the best pssible decisins in the future!
34. When d peple feel regret accrding t the passage?
35. What did peple mentin when being asked what they regretted ver their whle lives?
36. What is necessary t experience regret?
37. Share ne thing yu regret in yur wn life. Hw will yu d better next time? (List tw ways.)
